Identified by: Fingerprints FINAL DIAGNOSIS: 1. Gunshot wound of the back (#1): ‘A. Gunshot entrance wound on the right thoracic back. B. Bullet perforates the skin, subcutaneous tissues, musculature, posterolateral right eighth rib, right lung, and the anterior right third intercostal musculature before exiting. C. Exit wound on the right side of the chest. D. No projectile or projectile fragments recovered. E. Direction of the bullet is back to front, slightly upward, and slightly right to left. F. Indeterminate range of gunfire (no muzzle injury, soot, or gunpowder stippling; entrance wound covered by clothing). G. Associated injuries: right hemothorax (375 mL) and bilateral renal pallor; reported history of abundant blood loss at the death scene. Il. Gunshot graze wound of the back (#2): ‘A. Gunshot graze wound on the lower right thoracic back. B. Bullet perforates the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and embeds into the underlying ‘musculature. C. Indeterminate range of gunfire (no muzzle injury, soot, or stippling; entrance wound covered by clothing). IIL. Gunshot wound of the back (#3): ‘A. Gunshot entrance wound on the lower left back. B. Bullet perforates the skin, subcutaneous tissues, left psoas muscle, mesentery, and the stomach before exiting. C. Exit wound on the mid abdomen, immediately superior and left of the umbilicus. D. No projectile or projectile fragments recovered. E. Direction of the bullet is back to front, slightly left to right, and very slightly upward. F, Indeterminate range of gunfire (no muzzle injury, soot, or gunpowder stippling; entrance wound covered by clothing). G. Associated injuries: hemoperitoneum (trace) and bilateral renal pallor; reported history of abundant blood loss at the death scene. IV. Other injuries ‘A. Contused Taser puncture sites of the upper right back and right shoulder. B. Facial abrasions and contusions. C. Right temporalis muscle hemorrhage and left occipital subscalpular/subgaleal hemorthage. D. Contusion, right thoracic back. E. Scattered abrasions and contusions of the upper and lower extremities. F. Tan, dried abrasions of sacral back. V. Methamphetamine present in postmortem blood. VI. History that the subject was shot by law enforcement, OPINION: [tis my opinion that Zachary Gifford, a 39-year-old male, died asa result of multiple gunshot wounds. The bullets collectively perforated the right lung, mesentery, and stomach, resulting in massive blood loss and his subsequent death, Investigation and autopsy findings are consistent with these wounds being the result of the actions of another person or persons.
