SUMMARY
The thesis is devoted to the study of verbal means of persuasion, strategies
and tactics of persuasion implemented by representatives of various social roles in
induced and spontaneous discourses. Although verbal means of persuasion are
fairly fully described in English-language discourses of politics, advertising,
diplomacy, pedagogy, and business communication, all researches focus only on
mass-directed speech influence rather than personal interactions. Thus, general,
non-profession-related trends in the process of persuasion have not been studied
yet. Therefore, the topicality of the research is defined by the fact that the
linguistic and linguopragmatic features of the materialization of persuasiveness in
both status-oriented (induced) and personality-oriented (spontaneous) discourses
still have not been the subject of special investigation, and this research will
enhance knowledge in this area.
The purpose statement of the study is to identify the verbal means by
which persuasion strategies are implemented in modern English induced and
spontaneous discourses in Peter Morgan’s English-language series ‘The Crown’.
The objectives of the research are following:
- to determine the theoretical and methodological foundations of the
study of verbal means of persuasiveness in induced and spontaneous discourses;
- to define the status and role factors influencing the speech behaviour
of the language personality during the process of persuasion;
- to expand the existing classifications of strategies and tactics of
persuasion;
- to analyze the correlation of status-role factors and persuasive
strategies with the number of interactions in which the communicative goal was
achieved;
- to classify the linguistic means of persuasiveness in the series ‘The
Crown’ and characterize their use in the implementation of various persuasive
tactics.
The object of the research is verbal means of persuasiveness in different
types of discourses.
The subject of the research is the functional properties of verbal means of
persuasion, which the participants of communication use in performing different
social roles in induced and spontaneous discourses.
Theoretical basis of the thesis: O. Issers, T. van Dijk, P. Serio, V. Karasik,
V. Chernyavska, A. Fadhil, J. Skrynnik, E. Shils, M. Burgoon, M. Veber, G.
Pocheptsov dedicated their studies to discourse analysis, status and role factors,
verbal influence, and language means of persuasion.
The practical value of this paper is that the results can be used in the future
studies of persuasiveness, and in special courses of communication theory,
discourse theory, sociolinguistics, and theoretical grammar.
The following methods have been used during the research:
- a method of pragmaliguistic analysis for classification of persuasive
strategies and tactics;
- a method of pragmasemantic analysis for the classification of
linguistic means of persuasiveness;
- a comparative method and discursive analysis to determine the
difference between colloquial and institutional discourses;
- qualitative analysis to distinguish illustrative material according to a
particular discourse, status-role characteristics and categories of verbal means of
persuasion;
- qualitative analysis to establish the correlation between status-role
factors, persuasive strategies and the number of interactions, in which the
communicative goal was achieved.
The scientific novelty of the research is that it presents the results of
linguistic analysis of verbal means of persuasion, as well as general strategies and
tactics of persuasion in induced and spontaneous discourses within personal-
oriented communication. The research material, which is Peter Morgan’s modern
English-language series, is also studied for the first time.
Approbation. The results of the research were presented at a scientific and
practical conference “Education and Science 2021” section “Word, sentence, text
and discourse of the English language in modern linguistic studies”.
The structure. The thesis consists of the introduction, two chapters,
conclusions, and the list of references.

The Crown’

(1) And out of that work, a tiny seed grew. A seed of respect and
admiration. A seed that grew into a flower they could eventually call love[s. 4, e. 3,
48:21];
(2) And while theirs is not a perfect marriage… it is a long-lasting
marriage. And, in its own way, a happy marriage [s. 4, e. 9, 37:08].
(3) Would that be so bad? To free yourself once and forever? To find
happiness? [s. 4, e. 7, 42:40];
(4) She even got the stag, damn her! It must bewritten in the stars [s. 4, e. 2,
49:43];
(5) Elisabeth: Oh. Well… Of course I’ll have to take advice… on the how’s
and where’s and… all official matter, but if it’s what you rdesire… [s. 1, e. 6, 13:36].
(6) Now he’s The Lion of Africa, playing the Soviets off against the
Americans, and you’re a lamb the lion will have for lunch [s. 2, e. 8, 27:11];
(7) Elizabeth: You don’t want to give it more time?
А. Eden: No, ma’am. The right thing to do is to go in now, and to go in
hard. I was right about Mussolini. I was right about Hitler, and I’m right about this
fella [s. 2, e. 1, 49:40];
(8) Well, one queen to the next. Mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, might be
nice [s. 4, e. 3, 07:25].
(12) And risk of doing serious and irreparable harm to the relationship
between Buckingham Palace and Downing Street [s. 4, e. 8, 29:26];
(13) I was wondering if I might make one or two minor adjustments to the
text? Give it a bit more colour. Make it felt a bit more like me. And breathe a little life
into it [s. 1, e. 8, 24:38];
(14) Apparently, it could have a catastrophic effect on the reputation of our
intelligence services [s. 3, e. 1, 35:13].
(15) Why not use a celebration such as this, the investiture of a new
sovereign, a beautiful young child, symbol of modernity, change and progress, to
60
turn a page? Surely the sophistication of a society can be measured by its tolerance
and ability to forgive [s. 1, e. 5, 20:40].
(16) I’m sure we all agree he’s a symbol of a bygone era, of privilege and
inequality, empire and extravagance [s. 3, e. 5, 1:54].
(17) Now, I wonder, in light of this, whether you might go back and use
your considerable influence and ask your Cabinet colleagues if they might
reconsider their decision to oppose the marriage [s. 1, e. 10, 31:59];
(18) Margaret: But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to having done a little
thinking, in view of how well it all went… about us doing it more often.
Elizabeth: Doing what?
Margaret: Sharing duties [s. 3, e. 2, 37:04].
(19) As to who should succeed me, as sovereign you have the prerogative to
consult, but there’s only one man, in my opinion [...] I would call Alec to the palace
right away, ma’am. It would be my advice [s. 2, e. 10, 37:39];
(20) Are you really sure about this? A divorce can leave a woman quite
isolated. Maybe things will get better if you stick it out. I tend to think that’s always
the best way for everyone. Grass is rarely greener [s. 2, e. 2, 15:30].
(21) I was just… wondering if you were happy with it? You don’t think it
strikes the wrong tone? […] I suppose if I had a concern… it would be that, post-
63
Suez, in this new climate… in this new Britain… the tone of the speech is…
somewhat… Old-fashioned [s. 2, e. 5, 09:31];
(22) You know, there is a danger we might be overdoing it. Perhaps, it
should be prudent to take a few things out […] Maybe we don’t visit all of them [s. 1,
e. 8, 30:10].
(23) Pick it up. Go on. Touch it. Smell it. So next time you’re paying the
organ in some cathedral, having lofty thoughts in the heavens close to God, think of
my members, my comrades[s. 3, e. 9, 20:34];
(24) So, go. Have some time in the spot light, be the main attraction, and
enjoy the attention. Hopefully it will do you some good. You might finally be less
resentful [s. 1, e. 10, 21:21].
(25) Then you would do well to remember the promises you made to me. And
the consequence breaking those might have on the Crown [s. 2, e. 9, 25:00];
(26) Great things have happened to this country under the scepters of her
queens and you should be no exception [s. 1, e. 3, 38:38];
(27) I will always behalf-king. My tragedy is that I have no Kingdom. You
have it. And you must protect it [s. 1, e. 10, 37:44].
(28) What if he went there, studied there, learned enough Welsh to address
the country in their native tongue? [s. 3, e. 6, 02:30];
(29) I have the greatest sympathy for your condition, Prime Minister. And I
fully understand the need for rest… but given the challenges that are now facing this
country you don’t feel that you have responsibility to execute your duties just a little
bit longer? [s. 2, e. 2, 16:39].
65
(30) I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Let’s just say I can’t see it ending well
for you [s. 4, e. 10, 46:35];
(31) Now, I feel compelled to remind Your Majesty that the tolerance of the
royal family is hanging by a thread as it is [s. 3, e. 5, 40:48].
(32) Until you recognize the miner’s contribution to this country […] then
there can be no agreements made with the NUM [s. 3, e. 9, 20:44];
(33) If you care about me as much as you say you do, sir, you will let go of
these ideas of breaking it off with Diana [s. 4, e. 10, 28:34];
(34) The best thing for every one would be if you said your goodbyes quietly,
and disappeared into the night [s. 1, 2. 3, 01:30].
(35) Everyone’s all for it because everyone understands it’s time to finally
close this chapter. To put the whole Parker Bowles soap opera behind us. All of us
[s. 4, e. 2, 50:10];
(36) The question we in the fourth estate need to be asking ourselves is do we
let ourselves be used, or do we have our own independent voice? [s. 1, e. 6, 20:10].
67
(37) It’s quite common among businessmen and executives, and it’s no
different for clergymen. We see a particularly high level of dissatisfaction among
mid-career clergymen… [s. 3, e. 7, 12:53];
(38) Margaret: In your place. And representing the Crown and country with,
I think we can agree, favorable results [s. 3, e. 2, 37:04].
(39) The people of this country need stability. As do I, more than ever [s. 2,
e. 10, 20:00];
(40) Charles: That’s what everyone keeps saying. […]
Anne: I concur [s. 4, e. 2, 49:43].
(41) The majority of marriages survive because the majority of people aren’t
fantasists. They are realists and accept the imperfect reality of being human [s. 4, e.
9, 37:32];
(42) And therefore I come to you, in the name of the party and of the
country, for the very last time, Winston, to bid you to stand down [s. 1, e. 9, 19:48].
(43) No one wants your marriage to end, not a single person. Not Diana, not
your children, not your mother or your father, not me, not a single one of your
friends, and, most importantly, not even the woman you think loves you [s. 4, e. 9,

(46) Lord Altrincham: Putting an end to the debutantes' ball. This is the sort
of inequity that should have died out with our grandparents’ generation, certainly
after the war.
Elithabeth: Next.
Altrincham: Uh… Allow divorced people to move more freely in royal
circles.
Elizabeth: Why? The sovereign is head of the Church of England, and the
Church does not recognize divorced persons.
Altrincham: It’s unkind. Discriminatory. Quite possibly unlawful.
Elizabeth: Next.
Altrincham: Uh… I would recommend to get rid of an entire generation of

as I was promised.
T. Lascelles: I’m afraid that will not be possible.
P. Townsend: Tommy… I understand you’re only trying to do your job.
But one thing a trip to the Northern Ireland has made very clear tome is that the
romance between Margaret and myself has caught the public eye. There is a
momentum for us, a sense of joy and celebration, which you would be wise to
acknowledge. The people can clearly see the sincerity of the love between Margaret
and me, and I would advise you not to reprehend us for that. Such an act could
backfire [s. 1, e. 6, 46:01].
“I don’t expect you to accept the post” насправді означає “You mustn’t accept the
post”.

(50) Elizabeth: But before you announce it and rush up the aisle… are you
sure that Tony’s the right man?
Margaret: I can’t believe you’re doing this.
Elizabeth: Margaret. In the first flush of a romantic love, we’re all blind.
We see only what we want to see. You hardly know him.
Margaret: And you know him even less.
Elizabeth: I’m just concerned that in a rush to heal wounds… you end up
committing yourself to something, someone, that that isn’t quite right. [...] I just
want to make sure that it isn’t some kind of revenge.
Margaret: Tony is no revenge. Tony is a free choice. Tony has given me
reason to hope and dream. He makes me feel things no one ever has. [...]
79
Elizabeth: But he’s also a very complicated man. With a complicated past,
and who knows, a complicated present. [...] I’m merely asking if he’s the right man
for a lifelong commitment. Is he really cut up for marriage with all its ups and
downs?
Margaret: […] Because Tony makes sense of me, defines me. At long last,
I know who I am and what I represent. [...] A woman in my own right. A woman for
the modern age. And, above all, a woman who is free. Free to live, to love, and free
to break away.
Elizabeth: But you’re not breaking away. Because you won’t give up your
title, your rank, your privileges, for one simple reason. You enjoy it all too much [s.
2, e. 7, 48:20].
(51) Porchey: It’s… possible that the system set up by your late father is now
a little…
80
Dickie: Obsolete?
Porchey: And might need, uh…
Dickie: Kicking out? Throwing on the dustheap?
Porchey: If you want to keep up with the Aga Khans of this world, I
would suggest you follow their lead.
Elizabeth: And do what?
Porchey: Travel round the world and catch up with all the latest
developments.
Elizabeth: I can’t just do that. In caseyou hadn’t noticed, I have a job to
do.
Porchey: It would only be France, not Timbuktu. There are experienced
people who are able to deputize for you in your absence [s. 3, e. 5, 13:07].
(52) The King: She is the job. She is the essence of your duty. Loving her.
Protecting her. […] But doing this for her, doing this for me… there may be no
greater act of patriotism. Or love.
Phillip: I understand, sir.
81
(53) Phillip: You’re my wife, taking my name is th elaw. [...] You can’t do
this. Am I to be the only man in the country whose wife and children don’t take his
name?You can’t do this to Dickie. You know how important it is to him.
Elizabeth: The name has to be Windsor. [...]
Phillip: Then why go along with it? [...] What kind of marriage is this?
What kind of family? You’ve taken my career from me, you’ve taken my home. You’ve
taken my name. I thought we were in this together [s. 1, e. 3, 52:10].
(54) Elizabeth: No, you are not suffering. We’re suffering having to put up
with this! Let me make something clear. When people look at you and Diana, they
see two privileged young people who, through good fortune, ended up with
everything one could dream on in life. No one, not a single breathing living soul
anywhere, sees the cause of suffering.
Charles: They would if they knew.
Elizabeth: Knew what? They know that you betray your wife and make
no attempt to hide it. They know that thanks to you, she has psychological problems
[…]. They know that you’re a spoiled, immature man, endlessly complaining
unnecessarily, married to a spoiled, immature woman, endlessly complaining
unnecessarily. And we are all heartily sick of it. All anyone wants is for the pair of
you to pull yourselves together, stop making spectacles of yourselves, and make this
marriage and your enormouslyprivileged positions in life work. [...] And if one day
you expect to be king - -
Charles: I do.
Elisabeth: Then might I suggest you start to behave like one [s. 4, e. 10,
43:09].
