World of Tomorrow

Pressing issue
One of the issues that Indore faces is Air Pollution. Last year the city witnessed one of the highest
numbers of air pollution particulate matter 2.5 and 10. If we compare air pollution from 15 years back,
we can notice the change. More and more deforestation to accommodate the increasing population and
industry has worsened the situation more. Increasing disposable income and easy credit facilities have
led to a tremendous increase in number of registered vehicles which is increasing at a pace of over 1,
00,000 every year. These situations combined with lack of monsoon are making air quality poorer. It is
leading to major respiratory and skin deceases. Even after becoming India’s cleanest city for third time in
a row it is still lagging in cleaner air.

How to combat
To combat this issues the first and foremost thing that can be done is increasing awareness and usage of
public transportation services like BRTS and Metro (under construction). The BRTS system needs to be
expanded to cover whole city and not just the new city. Also stricter rules and governance need to be
established to reduce and keep a check on industrial air pollution and establish air quality testing
equipments.

Functionality of idea
Making public transport more accessible through better route planning and expanding can help in
reducing the emissions from vehicles. Currently the time lag is high between buses which act as a
deterrence. So expanding the routes to corner areas like Rajendra Nagar and Rau can be done to
increase reliance on public transport. For industries there should be regular monitoring on emissions
and state government can use both negative as well as positive actions reduce air pollution.

Opportunity for a sustainable business

One of the business opportunities that I feel is that in near future there will be stricter norms on vehicles
with excess emissions and vehicles that are below a particular model of engine. So a sustainable
business in this area could be to improvise the old engines in vehicles which emit higher emissions. This
can be done by taking prior permission from government and explaining them how can the old vehicles
be still used if the engine is improvised or changed. This way the people with vehicles which will not be
allowed to use it due to government norms can still use their vehicles by getting their engines
improvised from us.

Why Backwaters?

I have always been a person who loves to organize events. During my graduation I was involved with
various clubs and committees, like Rotaract Club, NSS, Cultural Committee, social committee and
Conclave committee, and organised varied events. I would like to leverage learnings from my past
experience to contribute positively and to set new standards for backwaters.

A committee functions like any company. Things start with product management (designing events),
marketing them, managing finances and people, and the most important, taking care of operations
(smooth execution of events). This helps us to get experience how actual work is done outside the
books. Backwaters, through its events, will not only give me a platform to learn managing events but
also give amazing opportunities to network with corporate leaders and understand practical application
of theories in real world.

After working in Marines for some time, Ann Gildroy began to think what she wanted to do in longer
term. Here she showed her growth needs as described by Alderfer’s ERG theory. She had a desire for her
personal and psychological development, and it was motivating her to explore and perform. After that,
when she was recalled back to Iraq because of the war situation there, The General did not give them
any specific direction and gave them direct access and complete freedom of the movement. This can be
related to McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y where The General used Theory Y by liberating the control
by empowering and giving responsibility. With this motivation, they started on the mission. They had
high expectancy as they had confidence that their efforts will lead to performance, and the reward
attached with the performance was aligned to their goal of making the city a safer place for residents.
The valence of the mission was very high as they as the attractiveness of freeing the city, and the
anticipation that they will be able to achieve it was high. This all raised the motivation by giving a
multiplicative effect, according to Victor Vrooms Expectancy Theory.

The goal set by them in this mission was specific and attainable. The goal was linked to her personal
goal, and thus, there was goal commitment. It was a challenging goal which increased the motivation of
the team.
