HEIGHT SAFETY IN RELINING

• Control measures are needed where

there is a risk of injury irrespective of fall
height

• For low falls, you should assess the risk

and provide reasonably practicable
measures that reflect the risk

RUSSELL SAFETY PORTAL
RUSSELL SAFETY PORTAL

• Portal is a foundation for other RUSSELL

Safety features including
• RUSSELL SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE,

• RUSSELL CHARGE ACCESS,

• RUSSELL Mill Surveillance and

• MILLBRITE In-Mill Lighting

• Available on new RUSSELL Mill Relining

Machines as well as retrofit on existing
RUSSELL Mill Relining Machines.

• Provides a unified height safety solution for accessing the Machine console and the charge.
Between relines, Portal is

The relining crew carry it into position on the RUSSELL Mill ground with a lifting frame.

Relining Machine liner cart and pin it into position of the

base unit, thereby providing an automatic means of safe
entry for the mill relining crew.

Power for the Safety Portal can then be connected outside

the mill. Once connected, MILLBRITE, Safe Beam Traverse
and RUSSELL Mill Surveillance can be installed inside the
mill and connected to power outlets on the Safety Portal.
RUSSELL SAFETY PORTAL
Portal provides a stable mounting point for
RME technologies including MILLBRITE and
RUSSELL Mill Surveillance.

MILLBRITE and Mill Surveillance remain

inside the mill during inching.
RUSSELL SAFETY PORTAL
Horizontal lifeline runs through trunnion
entry to inside of mill, providing a means of
RUSSELL SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE for
reliners.

One cable provides for all fall arrest

systems.

RUSSELL
SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE
The Operator is then able to access
the beam inside the mill while still
attached to Portal’s horizontal lifeline.

SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE using Portal

allows setup of the operator seat while
the operator is fully restrained and
safe from fall hazards.

Safe entry and egress from mill by

operator is facilitated.
RUSSELL SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE
Objectives

RUSSELL SAFE BEAM TRAVERSE using Portal

responds to a frequent customer request to provide
a height safety solution for operators on the beam
of the MRM inside the mill.

Through this solution, mill relining personnel

assisting in liner placement and linercart rotation
are restrained.
RUSSELL CHARGE ACCESS

lightweight ladder is carried into the
mill and set up whilst the operator is
restrained by Portal’s horizontal
lifeline.
RUSSELL CHARGE ACCESS
Once on ladder, personnel may
disconnect lanyard and descend to
charge.
Adjustable ladder accommodates
variation in charge height.
Interchangeable between each side of
the RUSSELL TWIN Mill Relining
Machine.
Ladder is removed from linercart and
stored on charge during liner removal.
RUSSELL CHARGE ACCESS
Objectives
New height safety solutions using
foundation on Portal are faster and
easier to use than previous solutions.

Unified lifeline reduces

connecting/disconnecting from system
and removes complexity and
introduction of new risks.

Portal ensures that height safety

obligations of site are met.
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
RRR is a personnel rescue system designed to
perform safe recovery of injured operators from
charge.
All components required to perform a rescue are
stored in the RRR box in concentrator plant.
RRR’s lightweight components can be carried
and assembled by a single person.
RRR is rated and designed to meet
Confined Space / Personnel Rescue Standards.
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
Storage box keeps components in optimal
condition to ensure operational
effectiveness in event of a rescue.

IP65-rated latches and sealed lid reduce

exposure to moisture and dust which may
affect the condition of components.
Castor wheels and fork lift tunnels ensure
the box can be quickly and safely moved to
the mill for use.
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
Contained within box are RRR jib
masts, a personnel-handling
winch, a stretcher and a lifting
bridle.

RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE comes

standard with ultraMEDIC basket
stretcher. Alternative stretcher type can be
used depending on site requirements.
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
Once the components are on the MRM beam, RRR
follows a simple three step assembly process (see
diagram on right)
All connections are either convenient, using either socket
fitting or squeeze pins; there is no tooling requirement and
no risk of lost components.
After assembly, the operator can connect to the fall
restraint point on the winch bracket.
RUSSELL RESCUE
RAISE
Lightweight basket
stretcher included in the
RRR box weighs only
12.5kg including mat and
footrest.
The patient is safely
restrained on the stretcher
using integrated straps.
RUSSELL RESCUE RAISE
Once patient is winched to
beam level, mast is
pivoted to place stretcher
over beam (see diagram
far right).
Patient is then carried out
of mill on stretcher.

Objectives

Many sites do not have a rescue system in

place for injuries on the charge.

The RRR offers a fast and controlled

removal system designed for simple
operation in a rescue scenario.

RME EYE

The RME ‘EYE’ Visibility Camera System

has been specifically developed to increase
Mill Relining personnel safety.

RME ‘EYE’ improves operator view of

critical working areas which are not easily
visible from the operator’s console.

This significantly reduces the risks

associated with working in close proximity
to the RUSSELL Mill Relining Machine.
