THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER FOR ABE

MIDTERM EXAMINATION

1. A tank is filled with oil whose density is ρ=850 kg/m3. If the volume of the tank is 1.2 m3,
what is the mass and density of the substance?

2. The piston of a vertical piston-cylinder device containing a gas has a mass of 60 kg and
cross-sectional area of 0.04 m2. The local atmospheric pressure is 0.97 bar, and the
gravitational acceleration is 9.81 m/s2. (a) Determine the pressure inside the cylinder.
(b) If some heat is transferred to the gas and its volume is doubled, do you expect the
pressure inside the cylinder to change?

3. At what depth of below the surface of water will produce a pressure of 120kN/m 2?
What depth of oil is equivalent to?

4. A perfectly insulated, rigid tank with a volume of 0.2 m 3 contains a perfect gas which has
a molar mass of 18kg/mol and a ratio of specific heats of 1.45. initially the pressure and
temperature in the tank are 9 bar and 320 K respectively. A fan inside the tank is spun at
3600 rev/min for 20 seconds. The torque required to turn the fan is 30 Nm. Calculate
the R, Cp and Cv values of the gas and the mass of gas in the tank.

5. Steam enters a cylinder fitted with a piston at a pressure of 19 MPa and a temperature
of 500 °C. The steam expands to a pressure of 190kPa and a temperature of 208 °C.
During expansion there is a heat loss from steam through the walls of the cylinder and
piston of 120kJ/kg. Determine the displacement work done by 1.2 kg of steam during
expansion.

6. Two kilograms steam is expanded isentropically in a turbine from 33 bar and 410 °C to 4
bar. Calculate the work done per unit mass flow of steam. Neglect changes in kinetic and
potential energies.
