BAMBOO JOINT
SADDLE (BUTT) JOINT (BAMBOO JOINERY TECHNIQUES)

INTRODUCTION:

• Saddle (Butt) joint is a Orthogonal Joint in which two members are joints at right angle.
• It is the simplest form of joint which has horizontal member which is supported directly on the top
of vertical member.
• E.g. Roof eaves beams on posts.
 BAMBOO JOINERY TECHNIQUES:
SADDLE (BUTT) JOINT

• Making bamboo joint is quiet difficult/complicated because the bamboo is hollow,tapered

and also has nodes at varying distances and is also not perfect circular. So while preparing
bamboo joints we have to keep these things in mind.
• In this joint the top of the post can be cut to form a saddle to ensure seating of the beam
and good load transfer.
DRAWING:
Step1:Making horizontal part and drilling at its center.
Step2:Making vertical part and cutting into Fish Mouth shape.
Step3: Assembling both parts.
Step4: Inserting locking pin.
Step5: Final Saddle Joint.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES:

• Advantages:1) It will reduce the cost of bamboo.

• 2) It can provide a prettier and smoother joint surface.
• 3) It does not need complicated lashing techniques.·
• Disadvantages:1) It requires precise manufacturing skills and equipment's.
• 2) Cutting a notch in a bamboo drastically reduces its ultimate strength.
• 3) It requires quite long bamboo poles when building structure in large dimension.
• 4) It is hard for sealing.

FISH MOUTH JOINT:

INTRODUCTION:

• Fish Mouth Joint is a Orthogonal Joint in which two members are joints at right angle.
• It is the simplest form of joint which has horizontal member which is supported directly
on the top of vertical member.
• E.g. Roof eaves beams on posts.
TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS:

• Bamboo.
• Drill: For preparing holes in bamboo.
• Drill bits, Radial drill bits for cutting fish mouth on vertical member.
• Measurement Tape: To measure the length of the bamboo.
• Handsaw & Hex saw: To cut bamboo of required length.
• Hammers.
• Chisel: To split the bamboo in smaller parts for preparing locking keys.
PROCEDURE:

• First take required length of bamboo i.e upto 30 cm.From that for vertical member we require up
to 30 cm from that with node and for horizontal 15 cm.
• Now cut the vertical member into the fish mouth shape using radial drill.
• Now after cutting vertical member take horizontal member and mark the center point and drill the
hole for inserting locking pin from vertical member. The size of the drill depends upon the diameter
of key.
• Now take another part of bamboo to make locking pin which should be some extra in size and then
reduce the diameter using a chisel upto certain length.
• Now put the central key through vertical member and then put horizontal member into the key so
that it get fixed .
• After that we have to put three more keys to restricts the movement of the bamboo.
• After putting all the keys remove the excessive part and at last we get the final Fish Mouth Joint.
