DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

AC TECH CAMPUS, ANNA UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI – 25

Assessment – II

M.Tech - Chemical Engineering & Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals

CL 7015 Wastewater Engineering

Max.marks: 50

Part – A (10Marks)

1. What is the principle of the method used for conditioning of sludge without chemicals?
2. Write short notes on Industrial clusters.
3. Write about any two factors consider for aerobic digestion of sludge.
4. Outline the design equation for decant type of drying beds.
5. Write about a method used as an alternative to conventional solid liquid separation in
wastewater treatment.

Part – B (25 Marks)

1. (a) Design a gravity thickener for a wastewater treatment plant having primary and waste
activated sludge with the following characteristics:

Type of sludge Specific gravity Solids% Flow rate(m3/d)

Primary sludge 1.03 3.4 420
Waste activated 1.005 0.23 2500
sludge
Assume specific gravity of combined sludge is 1.02 and solids loading rate is 50 kg/m2d.

(8)
(b) Explain any one of the method used for dewatering of sludge. (5)

(OR)
(c) Explain the process of nutrient removal from wastewater. (8)
(d) Explain the application of evaporation in wastewater treatment. (5)
2. (a) Explain the mechanism of Ion Exchange in the waste water treatment process. (8)
(b) Explain the technique of wet air oxidation in wastewater treatment.
(4) (OR)
(c) Design an aerobic digester to treat the waste sludge produced by the activated sludge
treatment plant. Assume the following conditions apply:
(i) The amount of waste sludge to be digested is 2057 kg TSS/day.
(ii) The minimum and maximum liquid temperatures are 15°C for winter operation and
25°C for summer operation.
(iii) The system must achieve 40% volatile solids reduction in the winter.
(iv) The minimum Solids Retention Time for both summer and winter conditions is 60
days. From the plot the volatile solid reduction in winter is 45% and summer is 50%.
(v) Waste sludge is concentrated to 3% by using gravity belt thickener.
(vi) The specific gravity of the waste sludge is 1.03.
(vii) Sludge concentration in the digester is 70% of the incoming thickened sludge
concentration.
(viii) The reaction rate coefficient kd is 0.06 day-1 at 15°C.
(ix) Volatile fraction of digester Total suspended solid is 0.80.
(x) No primary solids are included in the influent to the digester.
(xi) Influent and digester suspended solid is 30000 g/m3.
(xii) Oxygen requirement for both summer and winter is 2.3 kg O2 / kg of VSS destroyed.
(xiii) Assume transfer efficiency of oxygen is 10%. (12)

Part – C (15 Marks)
