Procedures In Bathing (Tub Bath) And Dressing/ Undressing Of Infants

Learning Competency: 1. Demonstrate the procedures in bathing and dressing infants/toddlers

2. Bathe and dress infants/toddlers according to procedure TLE_HECG9-12SI-Id-e-2

Information Sheet:

There are a lot of ways on how to bathe a baby, namely: sponge bath, lap bath and sponge bath. The bathing
procedure depends on the condition/status of the baby. If the baby is ill, it is better to do the sponge bath using a damp
cloth and do it at the bed side. But if the baby is well, you can do the tub bath. Tub bath is the most common type of
bathing for babies. This can done after the umbilical cord falls off.

As a caregiver, safety should be our first priority. Here are some points to remember to ensure safety during bathing a
baby.

 Make sure to check the water temperature before doing the bathing.
 Never leave the baby alone or unattended in the tub.
 Keep the room warm since babies tend to loose heat quickly.
 Gather all necessary equipment/materials before starting the bathing.

 Always keep a firm hold on your baby during the bath.  Soapy bodies are slippery.
 Keep one hand on the baby when you turn away from him or her or step to the side.

After the bath:

1. Dry your baby well and dress him.

2. Do not use powders or oils on baby's body. Babies have their own natural oils, and using oils and powders can
decrease the amount of their own oils.
3. Brush and comb your baby's hair.
4. Nails:  Clean his fingernails and toenails. Carefully clip the nails with baby scissors as needed.  If the
fingernails are not kept short, your baby may scratch his face.
5. Put your baby in a safe place while you clean the bath area. Put items back on a tray and store it out of the
reach of children.

Bathing the infant will help to keep them clean and helps prevent skin rashes. In choosing a bath time, choose
a time when you're not rushed or likely to be interrupted. Some parents/ caregivers opt for morning baths, when the
babies are alert. Others prefer to make baby baths part of a calming bedtime ritual. If you bathe the baby after a
feeding, consider waiting for your baby's tummy to settle a bit first.
