Regional
livestock
production
East Asia and Southeast Asia, with some
19 million tons of protein, are the regions
with the highest production, mainly driven
by monogastric species. Western Europe,
North America and Latin America and the
Caribbean have similar production levels,
between 12 and 10 million tons of
protein. However, the profiles are
different: while beef and chicken meat
and milk are key in Latin America and
North America, Western Europe owes its
production mainly to beef milk.

emissions by species
Cattle are the largest GHG emitter with around 5.0 gigatons of CO2-eq, accounting
for 62% of all emissions. Pigs, poultry, buffalo and small ruminants have lower
emission levels, accounting for between 7% and 11% of total emissions.

Latin America and the Caribbean have the
highest emission level (1.9 gigatons of
CO2-eq), driven by the specialized
production of beef. East Asia has the
second highest level of emissions, with
more than 1.6 gigatons of CO2-eq,
followed by South Asia with 1.5 gigatons
of CO2-eq. North America and Western
Europe have similar levels of emissions
(around 0.6 gigatonnes of CO2-eq).

Methane is an important greenhouse gas; its negative
effect on global warming is 21 times greater than that of
carbon dioxide. Global methane production,
transmission, processing and distribution releases up to
88 billion cubic meters of the gas. Agriculture and
livestock are the main causes of this gas, so the use of
Biodigesters aims to take advantage of it for energy
generation.

Biogas can be burned on-site to heat buildings and
power boilers or even the digester itself. Biogas can be
used for combined heat and power operations, or biogas
can simply be turned into electricity using a combustion
engine, fuel cell, or gas turbine, with the resulting
electricity being used on-site or sold onto the electric
grid.
