From the Editor
Thank you for your support to the HFA!
The Years 2008-2009 saw the HFA embarking
on various activities with the hope of achieveing
one initial goal: to show the community that a
robust, though very young, Filipino Association
can exist, and does exist.
If we could get the community around us -
Filipinos, Japanese, and other nationalities -
know that we are right here, we can pull in
more members who can help in our plans, have
people who can share in our goals, and bring in
sponsors who can assist in our needs. If we are
able to do this at the infancy of our Association,
then we would have planted the seeds to carry
on, in the coming years, more focused activities
to bring about an improved quality of life for the
many Filipinos in Hiroshima. We begin with
small steps. In time, we can make our adoptive
community an even better place to be in.
For now, we take our plans one event at a time.
It takes patience to build an organization.
Tulong-tulong. Dahan-dahan.
One event may look to others as a simple
party. It is not; it is fellowship and community
building. One event may seem to others like a
simple fundraising activity. It is not; it is
developing self-sufficiency because HFA exists
as a purely volunteer-run group receiving no
funding whatsoever. These events create
networks that enable HFA to run programs for
education, outreach, and legal assistance.
Many Filipino associations in Hiroshima, and
elsewhere in Japan, have come and gone. It is
always a waste when such dedication and talent
of a pool of concerned Filipinos, almost always
aided by many kind-hearted Japanese, begin on
a very high note only to fade away in a year or
two. We pray this will not be our fate. So we
take our plans slowly day-by-day while seeking
support from the community around us.
Be with us as we continue on. Volunteer. Make
