Question 2
a) Preventive maintenance is an important component of a maintenance activity. Within a
-- maintenance -organization - it- usually -aooounts--for- -a- major- propOFtion- of -the -total-
maintenance effort. What is preventive maintenance? [2 marks]
b) To develop an effective preventive maintenance pro gr=, the availability of items is
necessary. Some of these items include, historical data, equipment records, skilled
personnel etc. What are the steps required to develop an effective preventive maintenance
plan? [6 marks]
c) Define corrective maintenance. [2 marks]

a) What is the difference between reliability and maintainability in maintenance?

b) The maintenance phase is an important element of the equipment life cycle during which
equipment must be maintained satisfactorily for effective performance. The cost of
maintaining equipment often varies from 2 - 20 times the acquisition cost. Define
maintenance costing. [4 marks]
c) List four (4) reasons for maintenance costing/factors affecting maintenance costs?

b) What are some of the costs associated with keeping an inventory? [5 marks]
c) A maintenance department uses ten (10) types of items. Table 4.1 below presents their
annual usage and cost per unit. Determine the following:
I. The annual dollar usage for each item
2. The ordered list of items with respect to their annual dollar usage
3. The cumulative yearly dollar usage and the cumulative percent of items
4. The A, B, and C classifications of items

a) What are the main guidelines for reducing human error in maintenance? [10 marks]
b) A sample of ten (10) machines that underwent maintenance was examined for
maintenance-associated defect. Table 5.1 below presents a number of maintenance
defects found in each machine. Construct the c-chart by using the data from this table and
comment on the resulting chart.
