of the student)
My student, S, is a 4th grade student who is in a general education classroom. She is on the

3. Resources

You are required to use 2-3 ELL-specific resources to help inform your understanding of ELLs and
increase your pedagogical strategies to assist students who are English Language Learners (ELLs). You
may use the resources listed within the module or other resources available to you. Briefly describe how
the resources were used to assist in your experience.

1. SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Strategies: I use “activating prior knowledge” to
help my student make connections between operation key words and multiplication strategies. We
discussed repeated addition and expanded form to lead up to multiplication with an area model. We
also talked about key words in common situations and applied our knowledge to multi-step word
problems.
2. Dialogue Journal: S and I wrote to each other in a notebook that we passed back and forth. We
discussed favorite things, family, friends, and culture. This was a great way for her to not only
practice writing skills, but also build a relationship.
