INT. OFRENDA ROOM, RIVERA HOUSEHOLD, LAND OF THE LIVING -

EVENING/TWILIGHT

(V.O)ABUELA
Music ruined this family, and I will
not let it happen again.

MIGUEL is staring at the ofrenda then turns his head and

looks out the window. Fireworks crack and MIGUEL's facial
expression changes to a determined one.

CUT TO;

EXT. STREETS OF SANTA CECILIA, LAND OF THE LIVING - NIGHT

(V.O)MIGUEL
I wanna be a musician.

MIGUEL running through the streets of Santa Cecilia,

determination on his face, Mama IMELDA's ofrenda photo in his
hand, trying to get to the cemetery.

CUT TO;

EXT. STREETS OF SANTA CECILIA, LAND OF THE LIVING - NIGHT

ABUELA and family running after MIGUEL, yelling his name

trying to stop him.

CUT TO;

EXT. STREETS OF SANTA CECILIA, LAND OF THE LIVING - NIGHT

MIGUEL (still running) looks back to see his family running

after him. He speeds up, cutting through alleyways, and
bumping into people. Eventually, he shakes off his family and
doesn't stop running until he arrives at the cemetery.

CUT TO;

INT. ERNESTO DE LA CRUZ'S TOMB, LAND OF THE LIVING - NIGHT

(V.O)MIGUEL
Our family doesn't understand.

MIGUEL takes the guitar from its place looking at it in his

hands in amazement. He looks at ERNESTO's photo and then back
 2.

down at the guitar. He strums it and the marigold flower

petals that were on the ground glow are blown into the air
floating back down to the ground in a glowing circle around
MIGUEL.

CUT TO;

EXT. CEMETERY, SANTA CECILIA - NIGHT

Miguel runs away from ERNESTO's tomb scared to death after

thinking he had been caught with ERNESTO's guitar and passing
through another human. He tries to stop a woman by trying to
grab her wrist but his hand just passes through her wrist as
if he's a ghost. He tries to get people's attention but is
ignored by everyone as if he were invisible. While running he
bumps into a lady and falls into an open grave.

CUT TO;

EXT. CEMETERY, SANTA CECILIA - NIGHT

MIGUEL
(looking up at the lady he bumped
into) Thank you ma-

The lady he had bumped into and that had helped him out of
the grave looks up at him and turns out to be a skeleton.
Both MIGUEL and the lady scream frightened. MIGUEL runs off,
dodging every skeleton he sees.

CUT TO;

EXT. CEMETERY, SANTA CECILIA - NIGHT

MIGUEL bumps into another skeleton and says sorry picking up

the skeleton's bones. The skeleton then MIGUEL's name
surprised and magically puts himself together.

CUT TO;

EXT. FLOWER BRIDGE, LAND OF THE DEAD - NIGHT

MIGUEL and his dead family are on the flower bridge, crossing
and MIGUEL looks around in awe.

(V.O)TIA VICTORIA
What? You didn't think we were real?

CUT TO;

EXT. RETURNING STATION, LAND OF THE DEAD - NIGHT

MIGUEL and his family step up to the counter

RETURNING COUNTER SKELETON

Anything to declare tonight?

PAPA JULIO
Actually yes.

The family parts and pushes MIGUEL forward gently. MIGUEL

turns his head and sees the COUNTER SKELETON and awkwardly
smiles and waves. The COUNTER SKELETON's jaw drops.

CUT TO;

INT. OFFICE, LAND OF THE DEAD - NIGHT

(V.O) SKELETON
You need your family's blessing

MIGUEL
It's my family you already had yours!
(he turns his back to her)

MAMA IMELDA
You go home my way or no way.

CUT TO;

EXT. ERNESTO DE LA CRUZ SUNRISE SPECTACULAR, AUDITORIUM,

STAGE - NIGHT

MIGUEL sees HECTOR on the ground breathing weakly

MIGUEL
HECTOR!

CUT TO;

INT. ERNESTO DE LA CRUZ SUNRISE SPECTACULAR, AUDITORIUM,

STAGE - SUN RISING

MAMA IMELDA
(sees the sun start to rise and
worriedly looks at MIGUEL) We have to
get you home.
