TEXAS FRECH SYMPOSIUM

JUDGES' INSTRUCTIONS
PROSE

1. The students will enter the room one at a time on a first-come, first-served basis and place a TFS
identification label on the ballot. If a student does not have a label, the student must fill out the top
portion of the ballot (Name and TFS ID #).

2. The student will provide the judge(s) with an unmarked, printed, paper copy of the selection. If the
copy does not include the title and the author of the selection, the student must be disqualified from
the event. NOTE: Showing the selection on an electronic device is not permitted.

3. The student will be judged on a prose reading. The student will be evaluated based on pronunciation,
vocal and physical communication of understanding, and appropriateness of the selection (length and
difficulty) for the level.

4. The student should be familiar enough with the material in order to establish eye contact with the
judge(s).

5. The student is permitted a certain amount of gesturing. However, these movements should not
detract in any way from the reading.

6. Please note that there is a 3-minute time limit. Time the student, indicating the total time of the
presentation on the ballot. Students who exceed the 3-minute time limit will receive a reduction in
points and/or be disqualified from the event.

7. Total the points and rank the students (places 1 through 8) as indicated on the individual
evaluation sheet. #1 is the best overall student. There may be NO ties.

8. Please write at least one positive comment for each student.

9. Fill out and sign the final result sheet.

10. Please remain in the room until the end of the scheduled event, even though you may not
have students waiting to be judged. Do not make your final rankings until the end of the
scheduled event.

11. Turn in all materials: (ballots and result sheet) to the Ballot Room (Library) immediately upon
completion of the event.

JUDGES:

PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT THE STUDENTS ONCE THEY HAVE STARTED THE PRESENTATION.
