TEXAS FRENCH SYMPOSIUM

JUDGES' INSTRUCTIONS
EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING

1. The students will enter the room one at a time on a first-come, first-served basis and place a TFS
identification label on the judge ballot. If a student does not have a label, the student must fill out
the top portion of the ballot (Name and TFS ID #).

2. The judge will give each student a pre-preprinted form on which the theme and topic have been
printed. The student will place a TFS identification label on the form. (Each form contains a
different topic question; do not allow students to choose the question. You will distribute the form to
each student randomly as he/she enters the room.)

3. The student will have 3 minutes of preparation time. During the 3-minute preparation time,
students may make written notes (in English and/or in French). However, students may not refer
to dictionaries, electronic devices or any other aid.

4. Students will be evaluated based upon their effective treatment of the topic, the variety of
vocabulary and idiomatic expressions used, pronunciation, intonation and pacing.

5. Each student may speak for the judge until the 3-minute time limit is reached, or until the student
completes his/her treatment of the topic.

6. Please DO NOT stop the student before the 3-minute limit. However, you must stop the
student at the end of the 3-minute limit.

7. Please DO NOT correct, prompt, question or interrupt the student.

8. Collect the form with the topic question and any notes from each student.

9. Total the points and rank the students (places 1 through 8) as indicated on the individual
evaluation sheet. #1 is the best overall student. There may be NO ties.

10. Please write at least one positive comment for each student.

11. Fill out and sign the final result sheet.

12. Please remain in the room until the end of the scheduled event, even though you may not
have students waiting to be judged. Do not make your final rankings until the end of the
scheduled event.

13. Turn in all materials: (ballots, forms, and result sheet) to the Ballot Room (Library)
immediately upon completion of the event.

JUDGES:

PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT THE STUDENTS ONCE THEY HAVE STARTED SPEAKING.
