TEXAS FRENCH SYMPOSIUM

JUDGES' INSTRUCTIONS
VOCAL GROUP

1. The groups will enter the room one at a time on a first-come, first-served basis and place a TFS
identification label on the group list for each member of the group. If a student does not have a label,
the student must fill in the information on the group list. (Name and TFS ID #).

2. The group will provide the judge(s) with an unmarked, printed, paper copy of the selection.
Failure to include both the music and the lyrics on the same page will result in disqualification of
the students from the event. Music must include notes sung by the students—not just lyrics and
chords. NOTE: Showing the music on an electronic device is not permitted.

3. Each group will be judged on the vocal performance, including French diction, accuracy,
interpretation, stage presence, and overall effectiveness.

4. The music does not need to be memorized. The music must be sung in French. Recorded
accompaniment provided by the group is permitted. Live accompaniment is not permitted.

5. Please observe the 5-minute time limit. Time the group, indicating the total time of the
performance on the ballot.

6. Total the points and rank the groups (places 1 through 8) as indicated on the group evaluation
sheet. #1 is the best overall group performance. There may be NO ties.

7. Please write at least one positive comment for each group.

8. Fill out and sign the final result sheet.

9. Please remain in the room until the end of the scheduled event, even though you may not
have groups waiting to be judged. Do not make your final rankings until the end of the
scheduled event.

10. Turn in all materials: (ballots, group list, and result sheet) to the Ballot Room (Library)
immediately upon completion of the event.

JUDGES:

PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT THE STUDENTS ONCE THEY HAVE STARTED THE PERFORMANCE.
