POME to Biomethane Project

Development in Pertamina
Pertamina Research & Technology Innovation
November 2021
Palm OIL Mill Effluent (POME) Production

15-20 Ton per hectare

• POME is the biggest portion of by-

product in palm oil process chain
• It potentially creates environmental
problem from the uncontrolled
methane release during its disposal
2
Emission Reduction from POME to Biomethane Conversion
1. GHG Reduction by the avoidance of methane release 1. Methane
Recovery Value
✓ Carbon Credit by

recovery
✓ Can be transferred beyond
physical boundary and
ton-CO2e/m3 POME time boundary

2. GHG Reduction by fuel conversion from fossil to bio-based methane 2. Fuel

Conversion Value
✓ Bio-certificate by ISCC PLUS
CO2 CO2 ✓ Can only be transferred

Key Assumptions:
In case of a conversion plant built in one Palm 1. COD 70.000 mg/l
oil mill with 35 tph FFB processing capacity, the 2. POME/FFB 0.7 m3/ton
total GHG Reduction will be : 3. Methane GWP is 25 CO2e

Pertamina in Natural Gas Business
The Subholding Gas Co.

Previously established as a State-Owned

Company (SOE), PGN become subsidiary
of PT Pertamina (Persero) since 11
March 2018 as part of Government of
Indonesia’s Oil & Gas Holding initiatives.
With the acquisition of 51% stake in PT
Pertamina Gas (and its subsidiaries) on
28 December 2018, PGN has officially
been the Gas Subholding Company.

Pertamina in Natural Gas Business

Domestic Business Area & Portfolio

PGN, as a Gas Subholding,
integrates natural gas
infrastructure in Indonesia
and improves access to
energy for all society and
users, through pipeline and
non-pipeline infrastructure.
At present, PGN, as a Gas
Subholding, has operated in
67 districts/municipalities, in
17 provinces in Indonesia and
shall continue opening new
areas.
Its end user segments enjoy a
good supply of natural gas,
starting from household
customers, gas stations
(SPBG), small-scale
customers, commercials,
industries, and power plants.

Screening Analysis Analysis
Potential Analysis

1. Type of product and its valuation:

a) Physical Biomethane : biomethane with Bio certificate from fossil fuel replacement
b) Virtual Biomethane : methane with Carbon Credit from methane avoidance (bridging the gap between supply
and demand position)
c) Biomethane as most economical option where fossil fuel are hardly available due to the demand position
2. Amount of Demand
3. Location of delivery
4. Type of delivered end product
a) City gas
b) CNG
c) LNG

R&D of Methane to Building Block Chemicals
• C1 Chemical is least favorable
pathway of chemical building
block compared with
conventional naphtha cracking
pathway or syngas pathway.

• Pertamina currently still do not

exercise the business of
methane and/or biomethane to
chemical building blocks, except
H2 production for refinery
process.

• Pertamina exploring the

feasibility of green methanol
production.

• Pertamina is open to any
