The Most Powerful Tools & Ranking
Strategies to Get Your Videos Showing Up
in the Top Spots on YouTube.
PRIMAL VIDEO 10X YOUR TRAFFIC
ON YOUTUBE

Hello and welcome!

This guide is designed to equip you with the top tools, strategies, and ranking fundamentals you
need to get your videos showing up in the top spots on YouTube and Google, ready for your
potential customers to find them RIGHT when they need.

I’m talking results like these…

We’ve packed a TON of awesomeness into this guide, including so many powerful insights and
strategies I only WISH we knew when we were first starting out…

To get you moving as fast as possible, we’ve broken it all down into 2 sections:

1. The Fundamentals: We’ll lay the groundwork with an overview of exactly HOW effective keyword
research works, why it matters, and how you can use it to take out the #1 spot on YouTube and
Google.

2. The Tools (and how to use them!): Part 2 is your playbook to put it all into action....
Here we’re looking at the tools you can use to unlock hidden search volume data, analyze the
competition, and quickly identify high traffic keywords with the greatest ranking potential.

I’m super pumped to share this with you! All I ask is that you take it onboard and actually IMPLEMENT
what you learn… (DON’T make this another ‘I’ll get to it someday…’).

To your success!

1. THE FUNDAMENTALS
What are keywords?
Keywords are the language used by people to describe a given topic online. These are the key words
(yep, see what we did there?) that your audience type into search engines – like YouTube and Google –
to describe the content that they’re looking for.

When there’s more than one ‘key word’ being used, it’s generally referred to as a ‘keyword string’, or a
‘longtail keyword’. In the example below, the keyword string, or combination of keywords being
searched, is “best video editing pc.”

The rest of the keyword strings showing in the above example are actually suggested by Google,
based on the ‘best video editing pc’ keywords we entered… This becomes incredibly useful during our
Keyword Research - but more on that later!

What is keyword research?

Keyword Research is all about identifying THE TOPICS your target audience are searching for and the
EXACT LANGUAGE (KEYWORDS) USED to describe them.

You can then use this information to PLAN, TARGET and OPTIMIZE your content.

Targeting your audience based on the keywords they type in, not only increases the chances of your
content ranking higher; it also makes sure that your video reaches the right people at the exact time
they’re looking for it!

What you need to know about keyword research?

There are a few fundamentals to keep in mind when going through the Keyword Research process.
Understanding these core principles, and what’s really behind effective Keyword Research, can have
a BIG impact on your end results.

1. Use the language your audience is using to search.

The goal is to match the title of your video as closely as possible with the words that people are
using in their search queries. Doing this sends a strong signal to the search engines that your
content is a great match for those searching for that exact topic.

2. START with research.

Do the keyword research FIRST — before shooting your video, and before you even lock in your
topic outline! Following this sequence has its benefits:

• You can easily INCORPORATE THE KEYWORDS into the whole video concept and script.
By knowing exactly what your audience is searching for ahead of time, you can ‘bake-in’ these
keywords throughout the entire video. This not only sends more indicators to YouTube and
Google that your content is a match for that specific search, but it also helps your audience
instantly relate with your content (“Now you’re speaking my language!”).

• Starting with research helps your content RESONATE better with your audience.
When you understand the language they’re using and the questions they’re asking, you can
better understand the stage they’re at and their immediate pain points. Knowing that, you can
not only solve that immediate pain or challenge - but you can then over deliver with a solution to
the NEXT challenge they’ll face as well!

Doing the reverse can be TIME-CONSUMING and COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE. The last thing you want is
to go through the whole video production process and eventually find out that nobody’s really
watching.

3. The law of supply & demand applies here too.

Supply refers to the COMPETITION, or how many other people are uploading content that
corresponds to a specific search term. Demand is the SEARCH VOLUME, or the number of times
a given set of keywords is searched.

The rule of thumb:

• Low search volume + high competition = LOW probability of ranking
• High search volume + low competition = HIGHEST probability of ranking

Aim FOR THE SECOND ONE wherever possible. (We’ll get to how you can find this sweet spot
shortly.)

Note that it’s NOT ALWAYS about high search volumes.

Some people prefer an extremely targeted search and for their content to show up in super niche
queries. This often applies to those who have highly targeted clients or a high average transaction
value.
For instance, professionals with very targeted or geographically-focused clients, like property
agents or business brokers, often focus only on low volume, hyper-niche keywords. In these cases,
the average value of a lead or sale is typically also much higher.

It’s all about the right people finding you at the right time!

4. Use longtail keywords (longer keyword strings).

Longtail Keywords allow you to target your content to a very specific audience and give you a
much higher probability at ranking. The competition for a single word can be significantly higher
compared to longtail keywords – a stack of multiple keywords – that can niche down your topic.

For example, in the graph above –

• “editing” will have an incredibly high competition because it can refer to any kind of editing –
photos, videos, copy, etc.
• “video editing software” narrows down the topic and gives you a much better shot at ranking.
• “best video editing software for windows” is a very specific keyword that targets
the audience who are highly interested in this topic.

5. Always NOTE new video ideas when you find them!

Throughout the process, you’ll inevitably find new video ideas you haven’t thought
of before… NOTE THEM DOWN! This is often the best way to build up your library of
video ideas, because you’re looking at topics that you KNOW will deliver results!

2. THE TOOLS (AND HOW TO USE THEM!)

1. YouTube search
If you’re reading this or have watched any of our videos, you’re likely to be familiar with YouTube
already.

What you need to know

Aside from helping you look for videos, the YouTube search bar contains some powerful features
that allow you to perform effective Keyword Research, ninja-style!

• Autofill

For every character you type in the search box, YouTube gives you its best guess of what you
intend to search for. These ‘guesses’ are almost instantaneous, but they’re also incredibly smart!

For each one, YouTube is looking at the characters you’ve typed in, comparing them against its
HUGE archive of prior searches from OTHER users who had typed in the same characters, and
making suggestions to you based on what those users ended up searching for…

Meaning: those autofill recommendations provide a powerful insight into what OTHER users are
searching for, and the most popular search strings on the platform.

• Wildcard: the hidden power of the underscore

What if your audience is looking for the topic you have in mind, but they’re using different
keywords? You don’t know what you don’t know, right?

There’s a wildcard to solve this. You can use an inconspicuous but incredibly powerful
symbol – the underscore: _ .

When you add it into any part of your initial keyword (before, after or middle), YouTube will use its
powerful Autofill to suggest a variety of other keywords based on where you position it!

• Modifiers

If you’re struggling to come up with keyword ideas or want to narrow down the search, there are a
few simple modifiers to try. These reflect the language most people tend to use when describing
the content they want to find, or the pain they’re looking to solve:

• “how to” – a frequently-used modifier to describe a tutorial or process

e.g. “how to cook chicken curry”

• “best” – often used for product reviews

e.g. “best microphone for iphone”

• “tips” – actionable insights that deliver quick wins

e.g. “YouTube ranking tips”

• “tutorial” – an alternative for how-to’s (usually added to the end)

e.g. “video editing tutorial”

• “fast”, “quick”, “easy”, “simple” – because most people want shortcuts!

e.g. “how to lose weight fast”

If you combine these with the wildcard, you can dig up some great ideas.

Sizing up the competition and knowing exactly to look for:

YouTube search isn’t only for unearthing various keywords. You can also use it to measure up your
potential keywords against the competition. Here’s what to look out for:

• What are the average VIEWS PER VIDEO? Do many people watch the existing
videos? Which videos get the bulk of the views? What’s the content like for the
most-viewed ones and what can we derive from that?

• HOW OLD are the existing videos? Are the top results a few years old or relatively
new? YouTube tends to value newer content the most, so if the top-ranking videos
were uploaded a few years ago, it can be a positive sign for you!

• Are the existing videos OPTIMIZED FOR THE KEYWORDS YOU’RE TARGETING? You’ll find out
with a quick search, highlighting the keyword string anywhere it appears
on the page by pressing in CMD + F (Mac) / CTRL + F (Windows) - or ‘Find’ in your
browser - and typing in the keyword you want to test.

If you don’t see your keywords used in any existing videos, then good news - that’s a BIG
opportunity for you!

Key things to remember:

• Autofill and the wildcard are incredibly powerful. You can use them to:

• find new topic ideas

• identify specific search terms that people are using
• dive into search results to understand traffic and level of competition

• To gauge how competitive your keyword is, ask yourself these questions:

• How big are the current search volumes for this keyword? (Views per video are a
great indicator!)
• How many video results show up for this search term?
• Is anybody using my exact search term?

• If yes, are they at the top of the results? If no, then they’re not performing that well
relative to the top-ranking ones that are likely to have better watch time or audience
retention.

• YouTube values recency. Don’t be discouraged if you see a high-performing video

that’s older. You don’t need to go head-to-head; just work your way around, look
for related keywords, and make sure your keyword is optimized.

2. Keywords Everywhere

Keywords Everywhere is a powerful and super low-cost browser extension that unlocks Google
search volume data alongside each keyword in your browser, giving you an incredibly easy way to
assess the strength of each keyword, and identify the most attractive combinations at-a-glance.

Even though we’re looking at Google search volumes here (NOT YouTube’s…), the most common
keywords are generally very similar between both platforms so Google search data serves as a
great indicator we can leverage for YouTube as well.

Plus, because the two platforms are heavily integrated (Google / Alphabet owns them both), with
the right optimization your videos can rank on both YouTube AND Google!

In the example screenshot you can see how Keywords Everywhere allows us to quickly review a list
of very similar keywords suggested by YouTube and identify the one with the strongest volume.

In this case, the difference of just one word - between “how to make chicken curry” and “how to
cook chicken curry” - equates to over 7,000 extra searches in Google every month (a 50%
increase!)

But it’s not JUST search volume data we get from Keywords Everywhere... When you enter a
keyword into Google and hit search, on the results page it also overlays a list of suggested
keywords related to the one you’ve searched for, serving as a great resource to spark fresh ideas
for word combinations you may not have thought of yet, or even future video topics.

How to Use Keywords Everywhere:

a. With YouTube Search.

Keywords Everywhere unlocks an extra layer of data right inside the YouTube search bar,
allowing you to use Google search volume data to better assess the strength of each
keyword.

You can still use the same tools, tips and tricks outlined in the previous “YouTube search”
section – autofill, wildcard and modifiers – but now with powerful insights on search volume
at the same time.

b. With Google Search.

Google’s Search bar works much the same as YouTube’s, but produces slightly different
results based on Google’s search history instead. When viewing search results on Google,
Keywords Everywhere won’t just display search volume data - it also overlays a list of
suggested keywords related to the topic you’ve searched.
This can be a great way to identify potential keyword combinations you may have missed,
or future video topic ideas.

3. TubeBuddy

To get started: head over to TubeBuddy.com (or use our Affiliate link:
https://primalvideo.com/go/tubebuddy) and install the browser extension for free. Don’t worry
about jumping into the paid plan yet. You’ll have everything you need in the free account for now.

Once done with the set up, head back to YouTube and you’ll see the TubeBuddy menu on the
right-hand corner:

Note that the TubeBuddy panel tends to change its look from time to time. Don’t worry if it appears a
little different by the time you read this. The core elements should still be the same.

What to look for:

• TubeBuddy’s assessment on the ranking potential of keywords. When you complete a search
on YouTube, you’ll see TubeBuddy’s analysis of the strength of the keyword used. This includes
the search volume, competition and overall competitiveness of your keyword search string.
Green is a great result while red is poor.

The result below is the one you should be going for. TubeBuddy thinks this is a “very good”
keyword and none of the existing videos have used it in either the title or the description.

12
PRIMAL VIDEO 10X YOUR TRAFFIC
ON YOUTUBE

Note: You will want to use this assessment in combination with Keywords Everywhere and YouTube
autofill. While it provides some useful insights, we’ve encountered instances before where TubeBuddy
could be a little inaccurate.

• Related searches. In the same ‘Search Explorer’ panel above, after you make a search, TubeBuddy
will also suggest a few potential related keywords people are searching for. This can be a great
source of ideas and different keyword variations you may not have thought of.

• Tag explorer. This tool provides an assessment of each tag, which can be incredibly handy when
picking the tags for your videos and narrowing down your keywords.

© PRIMALVIDEO.COM
13
PRIMAL VIDEO 10X YOUR TRAFFIC
ON YOUTUBE

TubeBuddy also auto-suggests tags which pull together results from YouTube’s and Google’s
autofill:

Not only is this a reliable source of topic ideas, it’s also short-circuiting the process of using the
autofill from both YouTube and Google. The downside is you can’t use the wildcard (underscore) in
this section, so you don’t have as much flexibility to play around different ideas.

For us, the autofill + wildcard combo in YouTube’s search is still the better way to get new topic
ideas, so we’d recommend just tapping into this feature as a complementary tool.
