CASE STUDY 3
MIGRATION AND INTEGRATION OF THE QUALITY CONTROL AREA TO AN ERP FOR A
MANUFACTURING GLASS INDUSTRY

Definition

Manufacturing Industry: Glass products

Background: “Best Jars Co” whose objectives are the manufacture of jars, highball glasses and beer
jars, has an old computing system and many of their functions are carried out in manual processes
or in Excel files, such as the task of establishing measurements minimum and maximum of the
products that customers require, the current process is tedious and cumbersome, it doesn’t allow
in a friendly way to make comparisons between the various products and even the same
production lines, for which there is often data duplication.

Objective: To carry out a migration and integration of the quality area to an ERP system that
already exists in the company, but that will require some software developments for some specific
calculations that can even be parameterized by customers. It will be both parts in the system, the
current functional part and new developments. It is required to simulate a statistical process
control (SPC) within the ERP. The main objective is to modernize the department and improve
processes.

Production lines: beer jars, highball glasses and generic jars. They are manufactured: 500 daily
highball glasses, 350 daily generic jars and 100 daily beer jars.

Work areas to migrate: Quality area to Quality management module

Current quality process: Visual Inspection and calculations in Excel sheets. They have industrial
measurement equipment, such as vernier calipers, Magna-mike calipers and maximum and
minimum measuring instruments. The quality control processes are as follows:

1. Evaluate manufacturing selections, prepare Excel sheets, measure the jars: maximum and
minimum height, body width, thread neck finish width (jar), neck width (jar), shoulder
width, and glass thickness. For this sample, 20% of the production is taken at random.
2. Visual evaluation at the end of manufacturing, prior to the labeling and packaging process.
This evaluation is recorded in another Excel sheet by the quality control manager, he
unifies with the previous one. For this process, the entire production is taken.
3. In an Excel sheet, each measurement is recorded for each product and the evaluation is
carried out with the customer's requirement, based on the evaluation, production is
authorized or canceled.

* For this exercise, the evaluation of impurities in the mixtures is discarded.

New quality process: Simulation of a SCP (STATISTICAL CONTROL OF PROCESSES) within the ERP.

 Data capture from instruments, data analysis, data interpretation, formula definition
(customer specification), quality establishment, performance comparison and deviation
verification.

Requirement

You recently were hired as a project manager and advisor, in coordination with the CIO, the
quality manager, and the CEO; you have to plan the migration process, determining the following:

Definition of new quality processes:

1. Define the new quality processes, to do so, evaluate whether it is necessary to buy new
equipment or adapt the one they already have.

Project management plan:

1. Define the scope and deliverables of the project

2. Define the project processes
3. Define the milestones
4. Determine the conditions, restrictions and assumptions
5. Set the shortest path of the processes
6. Make the network diagram
7. Define the human resource, and their roles and functions
8. Estimate project costs (dollar currency) *
9. Make the activity plan

* For this exercise investigate the standard market prices of jars and glasses and calculate
wholesale costs.

Optional:

1. Scope baseline
2. Perform an WBS
3. Create the WBS dictionary
