Potential Errors in Positioning


Symptoms
1 ■ Root apices of maxillary teeth hidden due to overlapping by
hard gums
■ Rows of teeth appear in the form of a wave
■ Temporo-mandibular joints inclined too far outwards
■ Mandible more sharply displayed than maxilla
Cause
■ Patient’s head tilted backwards
■ ”Frankfurt Horizontal Plane“ not heeded when positioning

Symptoms
2 ■ Roots of the mandibular front teeth unsharp
■ Rows of teeth inclined upwards at each side
■ Temporo-mandibular joints inclined upwards at
each side
Cause
■ Patient’s head tilted too far forward
■ “Frankfurt Horizontal Plane” not heeded when positioning

Symptoms
3 ■ Maxillary and mandibular front teeth and canines
appear unsharp
■ Overlapping in molar and pre-molar area
■ Teeth appear crowded together
Cause
■ Patient’s head positioned too far forwards
■ Bite-wing device not used or used incorrectly or lateral
positioning light lines (OP5/OP10) not heeded
■ Chin support set too far to the front

Symptoms
4 ■ Maxillary and mandibular front teeth/canines appear
unsharp
■ Rows of teeth appear ”stretched apart“
■ Temporo-mandibular joints project too far outwards
Cause
■ Patient’s head positioned to far backwards
■ Bite-wing device not used or used incorrectly or lateral
positioning light lines (OP5/OP10) not heeded
■ Chin support set too far back (OP10)

Symptoms
5 ■ Magnification of maxillary and mandibular premolars
and molars; on opposite side of the mouth mirrored tooth
appears smaller
Cause
■ Patient’s head not in central position
■ Front teeth not positioned using the centralising beam
of the visualiser (OP5, OP10 & ORTHOPHOS 5, Plus CD,
Plus DS, Plus DS Ceph, Plus Ceph)

Symptoms
6 ■ Axes of the front teeth lie obliquely
■ One temporo-mandibular joint lies higher than the other
■ Slight bilateral distortion of premolars and molars
Cause
■ Patient’s head is tilted to the side
■ Patient’s head not positioned vertically using the
centralising beam of the visualiser (OP5, OP10 &
ORTHOPHOS 5, Plus CD, Plus DS, Plus DS Ceph, Plus Ceph)

Symptoms
7 ■ Area of front teeth too bright and vague
Cause
■ Spine not streched/patient not standing straight
■ Patient should have taken a small step forward one last
time to ensure correct posture

Symptoms
8 ■ Unexposed triangular ”blank spot“ originating from
lower film edge
Cause
■ Protective apron placed too high on patient’s chest

Symptoms
9 ■ Irregular ”bright spots“ in region of upper or lower jaw
Cause
■ Patient is wearing jewelry, hair pins or glasses, which are
reproduced and/or reflected elsewhere in the image
