LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

BASIC OPERATIONS ON INTEGERS

Background Information for Learners

In adding integers, we can use the number line. Let us now see how we will use this to get the answer of the
problem stated above. Let us represent the number of Corona Virus cases as positive integers: +8, +25, and +26.
Study how these are added using the number line. Example: (+8) +( +25 )+ (+26) = 59 If the addends have the
same signs, we add the numbers and copy the common sign. Example 1. (+5) + (+6) + (+13) = + 24 The sum is
positive since all addends are positive. +8 +25
We can add integers without the number line by following the rules below: Adding Integers with Like or the same
Signs.
If the addends have the same signs, we add the numbers and copy the common sign. Example 1. (+5)
+ (+6) + (+13) = + 24 The sum is positive since all addends are positive.
Adding Integers with Unlike or not the same Signs.
If the addends have unlike or different signs, we subtract the numbers and copy the sign of the
larger number.Example . (+10) + (-3)= +7
SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS(+5) - (+3) =5 is the minuend and 3 is the subtrahend
Step 1: (+5) - (- 3)= Get the opposite or additive inverse of the subtrahend (or change the sign of the subtrahend
to its opposite sign).
Step 2: (+5) + (-3) = Change subtraction to addition.
Step 3: (+5) + (-3) = +2 Follow the rule in adding integers.
