Answer ALL questions.

1. What are the various functions used in managerial decisions?

2. Mention the applications of Matrices.

3. Define slack variable in LPP.

4. List the applications of Bayes theorem.

5. Why arithmetic mean is the best measure of central tendency?

6. Give examples for Poisson distribution applications.

7. What do you understand by census method?

8. Define type I error.

Answer ALL questions, choosing either (a) or (b).

11. (a) What is the value of the function ( x 1) ( x 2) 2 at its maxima?

(b) The student council is selling flowers. They bought 200 roses for $1.67 each,
150 daffodils for $1.03 each and 100 orchids for $2.59 each. They sold the
roses for $3.00 each, the daffodils for $2.25 each and the orchids for $4.50
each. Organize the data in two matrices, and use matrix multiplication to find
the total amount spent of the flowers.
12. (a) A candy manufacturer has 130 pounds of chocolate-covered cherries and 170
pounds of chocolate-covered mints in stock. He decides to sell them in the
form of two different mixtures. One mixture will contain half cherries and
half mints by weight and will sell for $2.00 per pound. The other mixture will
contain one-third cherries and two-thirds mints by weight and will sell for
$1.25 per pound. Formulate this as a L.P.P. so as to maximize his sales
revenue.
Or
(b) In an industry, three machines A, B, and C produce stainless steel tumblers
in the ratio of 2:5:3 of the total production. Past experience revealed that
machine A produce 4 defective in every 50, machine B produce 1% defectives,
and machine C produce
2 defectives in every 60 units. One tumbler was drawn at random from a
day’s output and found to be defective. Find the probability that it was
produced by
machine C.

13. (a) For a random sample of 10 persons, fed on diet A the increased weight in
pounds in certain period were:
10, 6, 16, 17, 13, 12, 8, 14, 15, 9
For another random sample of 12 persons fed on diet B, the increases in the
same period were : 7, 13, 22, 15, 12, 14, 18, 8, 21, 23, 10 and 17. Test whether
the diets A and B differ significantly as regards their effect on increase in
weight given the following?

(b) The incidence of occupational disease in an industry is such that the workers
have it 20% chance of suffering from it. What is the probability that out of six
workers chosen at random, four or more will suffer from the disease?

14. (a) Write briefly about the various non- probability sampling methods.

(b) The heights of 10 males of a given locality are found to be 70, 67, 62, 68, 61,
68, 70, 64, 64, 66 inches. Is it reasonable to believe that the average height is
greater than 64 inches? Test at 5% significance level. Assuming that for 9
degrees of freedom P (t> 1.83) = 005.

Formulate hypothesis so that, if the null hypothesis is rejected, we can
conclude that salaries for staff nurses in Tampa are significantly lower than
for those in Dallas. Use = 0.05.

15. (a) Calculate the correlation coefficient from the following :

17. A company manufactures two types of models M1 and M 2 . Each M1 model


requires 4 hours of grinding and 2 hours of polishing while each M 2 model
requires 2 hours of grinding and 5 hours of polishing. The company has 2 grinders
and 3 polishers. Each grinder works for 40 hours a week and each polisher works
for 60 hours a week. Profit on a M1 model is Rs. 30 and that on a model M2 model
is Rs. 40. Formulate this as LPP and solve it graphically.

18. Police record show the following number of daily crime reports for a sample of days
during the winter months and a sample of days during the summer months.

(a) Compute the range and interquartile range for each period.
(b) Compute the coefficient of variation for each period.

19. A firm believes that the tyres produced by process A on an average lasts longer
than the tyres produced by process B. To test the believe, random samples of tyres

20. The following table relate to age of employees and the number of days they
reported sick in a month, calculate the data using Karl Pearson coefficient of
correlation and interpret it.
