Exercise #2

Apparatus/Material/Equipment Use/Function

1. Petri Dish

It is used to culture cells such as

bacteria or small mosses.

2. Inoculating needle and loop

It is used to transfer and inoculate

living microorganisms.

3. Pipette

It is used to transport a measured

volume of liquid, often as a media
dispenser. It is more accurate than
the graduated cylinder.
4. Spatula

It is used in scooping up small

quantities of powder.

5. Stirring rod

It is used to stir solutions, scrape

things off walls of flasks, to assist in
pouring liquids, and to transfer a
single drop of a solution.

6. Applicator stick

It is used for routine spot test

sampling and drop transfers.

7. Test tube with screw cap

It is used for storage, transport and

is designed with a screw cap to be
leak-tight for transport.

8. Alcohol lamp

It is used for heating, sterilization,

and combustion in a laboratory and
also to produce an open flame.
9. Autoclave

It is used to help sterilize glassware,

media and even waste in
microbiology laboratories. It uses
the power of steam to kill bacteria,
spores and germs resistant to boiling
water and detergents.

10. Graduated cylinder

It is used for measuring volumes of

liquids.

11. Pipette tips

It is used with pipettes and pipettors

to speed processing and reduce
cross-contamination.

12. Glass slide

It is used to hold objects or

specimens for examination under a
microscope.
13. Refrigerator

It is used to cool samples or

specimens for preservation and for
storing sample and chemical
supplies.

14. Incubator

It provides a controlled,
contaminant-free environment for
safe, reliable work with cell and
tissue cultures by regulating
conditions such as temperature,
humidity, and carbon dioxide. It is
used for the optimal growth and
storage of bacterial cultures

15. Inoculating hood

It is used to create bacteria, fungal

free atmosphere in the chamber
with UV germicidal light.

16. Test tube rack

It is used to hold upright multiple test

tubes at the same time.
17. Fermentation tube

It is used to verify gas production in

fermentation exercises.

18. Erlenmeyer flask

It is used for pouring solutions and

may be closed with a stopper in
order to store samples. It is used to
hold liquids or solids that release gas
during a reaction or that are likely to
splatter if stirred or heated.

19. Hanging drop slide

It is often used in dark illumination to

observe the motility of bacteria.

20. Centrifuge

It is used for the separation of fluids,

gas or liquid based on density.

21. Beaker

It is used for mixing, stirring and

heating chemicals and for holding
liquids or solid samples.
22. Tripod

It is used to support or hold the flasks

and beakers during experiments.

23. Clay triangle

It is placed on a ring as a support for

a funnel, crucible or evaporating
dish.

24. Top loading balance

It is used to determine the mass of a

reagent or object.

25. Micropipette

It is used to measure and deliver

accurate volumes of liquid.
