A. Application of Derivatives
1. Find the equations of the tangent and normal lines to the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 1 at (2,1).
Answer:
Tangent Line: 2𝑥 − 𝑦 − 3 = 0
Normal Line: 𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 4 = 0
2. Find the equation of the normal line to the curve 𝑦 = √𝑥 − 3 which is parallel to the line
6𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 4 = 0.
Answer:
Normal Line: 2𝑥 + 𝑦 − 9 = 0
Answer:
a. Critical value/s: 𝑥 = ±2
b. Critical point/s: (−2,16) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 (2, −16)
c. Maximum point: (−2,16)
d. Minimum point: (2, −16)
e. Point of inflection: (0,0)
B. Mathematical Problems involving Derivatives
1. A piece of wire 20 𝑐𝑚 long is bent into a shape of a rectangle. Find the maximum area that it
can enclose.
2. The velocity of a car 𝑉 = 𝑚𝑠 −1 between two road junctions is modeled by: 𝑉 = 3𝑡 − 0.2𝑡 2 for
0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 15 where 𝑡 is the time in seconds after it sets off from the first junction. Find the
maximum speed.
3. An oil spill from a tanker spreads out in a circular pattern, centered at the tanker’s position. If
the perimeter of the spill is moving outwards at 2 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑, find the rate of increase
of the contaminated area when the radius is 500 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠.
Answer: the rate of increase of the contaminated area when the radius is 500 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 is
1000 𝑚2 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑑
4. Find the number/s when the sum of two numbers is 20 and whose product is maximum.
Answer: 10
