V LOOKUP & H LOOKUP

1. It works on static column reference

2. it’s a simpler formula
3. It is based on specific input - static number to indicate the column
4. additional step leads to more errors
5. any inserted or deleted column will change the results of formulas
6. drag and copy the standard VLOOKUP formula across the lookup doesn’t work it pulls the same
value for each entry
7. It requires to specify a square table array - column reference cannot move beyond.
8. VLOOKUP requires more processing power
9. It works only with data which is arranged vertically
10. VLOOKUP - single formula that does all the lookup-and-fetch
11. Drag and copy the standard VLOOKUP formula across the lookup doesn’t work it pulls the same
value for each entry

12. Requires to specify a square table array - column reference cannot move beyond.
=VLOOKUP(A3:A252,M13:N14,2)
13. It works only with data which is arranged vertically & Horizontally3

Index Match

1. Dynamic Column Reference

It can refer to a column/row which adjusts itself if you add a row/column (dynamic) to original dataset.

Formula adjusts itself after inserting a column E

2. Complex Formula, slightly difficult to grasp for beginners

Imagine you’re working with a client/manager who is proficient in using VLOOKUP but doesn’t know how
to use INDEX/MATCH. It makes more sense to use a function which both you know, instead of trying to
teach them about INDEX/MATCH.
INDEX & MATCH are two separate functions that take three arguments each and should be combined to
do a lookup

3. Reduce the number of spreadsheet errors

When you use INDEX MATCH, the formula allows you to manually choose which column you want to pull
from. Thereby it leads to fewer errors because when you follow the INDEX MATCH syntax, you click
directly on the field containing the value you want to return.

4. More efficient Navigating

Because it is dynamic (adjusts itself with changes in dataset) and it refers to only 2 specific columns/rows –
one in which it needs to search a reference value and the other in which it needs to find the corresponding
match value, it is easier to navigate, follow and understand the formula.

5. Significantly improve ability to create complex models

Since it works with cell referencing in specific columns/rows, it allows to build complex models.
For e.g: Using multiple criteria for lookup. Here we have used an array formula to find matches of age and
rating criteria to find corresponding income

6. Reduce the time in heavy database component

7. Formula allows you to manually choose column
8. Can insert columns in table array without distorting results
9. Can set the return column to float – it moves as you copy your formulas
10. Processing benefit using index match
