Article: Salary Differences Between Male and Female Registered Nurses in the United States

Outline:
I. Introduction
A. Title - Salary Differences Between Male and Female Registered Nurses in the
United States
B. Author - Dr Muench
1Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of California, San
Francisco
2Department of Health Policy and Management, Yale School of Public Health, New
Haven, Connecticut
3Department of Health Policy, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville,
Tennessee
C. Thesis Statement - The goal of this study was to look at the salaries of males and
females in nursing over time, as well as to include a more recent sample. Salary
differences in clinical settings have been documented for diverse cohorts of
physicians. 2,3 and higher salaries for male registered nurses.
II. Body
A. Main Idea #1 - A salary gap by gender
1. Evidence #1,2,3 - The salary gap was $7678 (95% CI, $5319-$10 037;
P < .001) for ambulatory care and $3873 (95% CI, $3144-$4601; P < .001) for
hospital settings. The gap was present in all specialties except orthopedics,
ranging from $3792 (95% CI, $802-$6781; P < .001) for chronic care to $6034
(95% CI, $4175-$7893; P < .001) for cardiology. Salary differences also existed
by position, ranging from $3956 (95% CI, $2174-$5737; P < .001) for middle
management to $17 290 (95% CI, $11 690-$22 891; P < .001) for nurse
anesthetists (Figure 2).
B. Main Idea #2 - Male RNs out earned female RNs
1. Evidence #1,2,3 - - Both surveys showed that unadjusted male salaries were
higher than female salaries during every year (NSSRN, $10 775 [95% CI,
$10 243-$11 306], P < .001; ACS, $9562 [95% CI, $9163-$9961], P < .001;
Figure 1).

In all settings, specializations, and positions, male RNs earned more than female
RNs, with no shrinking of the wage disparity over time. Approximately half of the
gap was accounted for by employment and other assessed factors. The extent of this
discrepancy is comparable to physician compensation disparities.2,3
The NSSRN lacks specificity about specializations and jobs, and the survey data is
prone to reporting biases.

RNs' duties are expanding as a result of the Affordable Care Act's implementation
and the emphasis on team-based care delivery. Because nursing is the largest
profession in health care and is largely female, with nearly 2.5 million women
employed, wage disparities are particularly noteworthy. These findings may persuade
nursing employers, especially physicians, to examine their pay systems and take
actions to remove inequity.
