Week 1, LAS 1: Structure and Function of the Cell

Activity 1: Label the Parts
A.
Nucleus- E Nucleolus- F
Chloroplasts- I Chromatin- M
Cell Wall- C Vacuole- L
Cytoplasm- B Cell membrane- D
Ribosomes- H Rough endoplasmic reticulum- K
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum- G Golgi apparatus- A
Mitochondria- J

B. Function of Cell Organelles

STRUCTURE/FUNCTION Cell Part
1. Stores material within the cell Vacuole
2. The sites of protein synthesize Ribosomes
3. Transports materials within the cell Endoplasmic Reticulum
4. Jelly-like substance in the cell Cytoplasm
5. Organelle that manages or controls all the cell functions in a eukaryotic Nucleus
cell
6. Contains chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps energy from sunlight Chloroplast
and gives plants their green color
7. Digests excess or worn-out cell parts, food particles and invading viruses Lysosome
or bacteria
8. Small bumps located on portions of the endoplasmic reticulum Ribosomes
9. Firm, protective structure that gives the cell its shape in plants, fungi, Cell Wall
most bacteria, and some protists
10. Produce a usable form of energy for the cell Mitochondria
11. Packages proteins for transport out of the cell Golgi Apparatus
12. Produces lipids Smooth Endoplasmic
Reticulum
13. Saclike storage structure found in both animal and plant cells and tend to Vacuoles
be larger in plant cells.
14. Tiny hollow tube made of proteins that are involved in support, the Microtubes
movement of organelles within the cell, and the formation of centrioles
15. Everything inside the cell including the nucleus Cytosol

Activity 2: Match Me
Direction: Match the term with its correct description. Write the letter of your answer.
1. g 2. d 3. a 4. c 5. f 6. b 7. e
Activity 3: Cell Transport
Statement Isotonic Hypotonic Hypertonic
Solution Solution Solution
1. Causes the cell to swell /
2. Doesn’t change the shape of the cell /
3. Causes osmosis / / /
4. Causes a cell to shrink /

Reflection:
A. Water will flow out of the cell because water moves from higher to lower concentration meaning the 95%
percent of H2O inside the cell will naturally move out because of the laws of osmosis.
B. The cell will shrink due to the lower concentrations of water outside the cell, always remember that water
moves from higher to lower concentrations, and because there is water flowing out of the cell, it wil cause the
cell to shrink <3.

Week 1 LAS 2:
Activity 1: The Cell Cycle Coloring

Use the diagram and your notes to answer the following questions:
1. What is a series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide?- Cell Cycle
2. What is the longest stage of the cell cycle called? - Interphase
3. During what stage does the G1, S, and G2 phases happen? - Interphase
4. During what phase of the cell cycle does mitosis and cytokinesis occur? – M-Phase
5. During what phase of the cell cycle does cell division occur? -Mitosis
6. During what phase of the cell cycle is DNA replicated? – S-Phase
7. During what phase of the cell cycle does the cell grow? G1, G2
8. During what phase of the cell cycle does the cell prepare for mitosis? G2
9. How many stages are there in mitosis? 4
10. Put the following stages of mitosis in order; anaphase, prophase, metaphase, and telophase.
= Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
11. Put the following stages of cell cycle in order: G2, S, G1, M.
= G1, S-Phase, G2, M-Phase
12. Put the following in order: G2, G2, S, mitosis, cytokinesis.
= G1, S, G2, Mitosis, Cytokinesis
Activity 2: Stages of Mitosis
A.
1. Anaphase
2. Prophase
3. Telophase
4. Cytokinesis
5. Telophase
6. Metaphase
7. Prophase
8. Telophase
9. Anaphase
10. Metaphase
11. Prophase
12. Interphase
13. Cytokinesis
14. Cytokinesis
15. Interphase
16. Telophase
17. Metaphase
B.

A. Interphase
B. Telophase
C. Prophase
D. Anaphase
E. Anaphase

Reflection:
1. Why do you think mitosis is important in our daily life?
- Mitosis is essential and important to our everyday life because the process itself is what allows us to grow,
heal our physical wounds and replace the cells of our body that work together to keep us alive.

2. Cite examples. (Because it was not specifically stated what to give examples of, I assumed it would be
examples of how mitosis is important and how it helps us because this was the topic of the previous
question :D)
= It is helpful because it provides new cells for our growth and to replace our old ones helping our body to stay
healthy, it helps us to develop into having adult physical bodies
