Missy Meyer’s post on Tracing

Hey, everyone! We've had a number of comments lately that recommend tracing a found image as an option when
creating a design. I wanted to touch on why those comments get deleted and can potentially result in removal from the
group.

Images that you find in Google searches, or on Pinterest, or most other places on the internet are copyrighted to their
creators. The designer of that image automatically got a copyright to it upon creation of that image. And it's up to that
image creator whether or not to allow other people to use that image. They may allow others to use it for commercial
use, or personal use, or it may be their decision to not let anyone use it for anything at all.

If you find an image you like on Google or Pinterest, there's almost always a way to follow a link that leads back to that
image's original source. (In Google Image searches, it's a "Visit Page" button. For Pinterest, it's a "Visit" button.) There,
you may find that the image is available for purchase, or that there's a way to contact the image's designer to ask if you
can license the image for use.

I've seen several comments along the lines of, "If people don't want their images to be used, they shouldn't put them on
Google." But what those commenters may not know is that nobody ever actively sends their images to Google. Rather,
Google goes out to all of the web pages it can find, and "scrapes" content (text, images, and everything else) from those
pages, adding those things to its databases. So often times, a designer may not even know that their image, which they
only put up on their own site, is appearing in Google searches.
I've also seen comments claiming that they're just tracing for personal projects, so that makes it OK. The problem there
is that it isn't up to the tracer to decide how an image can be used; it's up to the image designer. So to a designer who
hasn't been asked if they'll allow that personal use (and who doesn't intend for their images to be traced at all), this is
the equivalent of stealing a t-shirt from a store, but saying that it's OK because the thief is just going to wear the shirt
around the house, not out in public.

So, long story short: tracing an image that isn't an image you personally made is, 99% of the time, violating someone
else's copyright. No matter what your end use, and no matter what kind of image it is (photo or drawing or type design
piece or anything else).

A quick listing of Font Managers vs Font Viewers

Wiki gives a great explanation of it so I’m not going to rewrite what they have.

Font management software is utility software that computer users use to browse and preview fonts and typically to
install and uninstall fonts. In addition, depending on the individual font management program's capabilities…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Font_management_software

Font Viewers are primarily for viewing installed, possibly uninstalled fonts, and even printing them into a catalog. There
are both installed (locally installed on your computer) and online versions (used with a web browser).
I checked out some of the most used that were listed in our group and some in the wiki listing above Always check for
system compatibility and follow the author’s notes/FAQ etc. Practice safe computing.
