Humans are wired to thrive in tribes because it provided survival advantages in ancient times. Being part of a trusted tribe satisfies basic human needs for value, belonging and engagement. Trust is created at the individual, interpersonal and group levels and develops through a sense of inclusion and value within the group. Our social and survival instincts reward us for belonging to tribes where we feel included, valued and thus able to trust others.

SCIENCE Chapter 4, Lesson 4: To Tribe Is to Thrive
TRIBE is a successful feature for humans,
because it is a strategy for working together to survive and to thrive (strength in numbers).
WE each survive because of attachment to a
tribe. Our ability to survive and to thrive is dependent on the need to feel value, belonging, and engagement by our tribe. Tribes require trust.
Let’s dig deeper into how trust is created in a
team.... We can look at this from 3 different but related perspectives: Individual - how people trust us 1:1 (2 people) – how we feel trust at a personal level Group – how we feel trusted in a group
We can look at how trust is maximized by
reflecting on these key concepts – the evolution of trust, and the brain science of trust. INVESTING IN HAPPINESS: IMPROVING YOUR BUSINESS AND WORK THROUGH BRAIN SCIENCE Chapter 4, Lesson 4: To Tribe Is to Thrive
The survival strategy for our Stone Age
ancestors was being a part of a group. Part of a TRIBE.
“If we’re in the TRIBE we Survive. Outside the
TRIBE we die.”
When we interact in a group/tribe/team, our
social brain is looking for what it takes to remain inside the tribe:
We need to feel INCLUDED by the group.
We need to feel VALUED by the group.
When we are included and valued by the tribe,
we can TRUST that we won’t be abandoned. We will be safe.
When we are INCLUDED & VALUED, our Social
Brain understands there is safety & trust, and our Survival Brain rewards us. INVESTING IN HAPPINESS: IMPROVING YOUR BUSINESS AND WORK THROUGH BRAIN SCIENCE Chapter 4, Lesson 4: To Tribe Is to Thrive
