Surface Design Container

Objectives:
• To correctly slab build a lidded container or box wall
piece
• To use a stencil as your template when cutting your clay/
when making your slabs
• To correctly use surface design techniques
• Project must have 1 sgraffito image
• Project must have one stencil
• Project must have slip inlay

• To visually create a story on the sides of your


container with images of man-made objects that
represent you and your story
• Project must have 2 man-made objects
• Project must have 1 portrait and or body part
•To have good craftsmanship while building and carving
•Project will be done in all black and white with one possible
accent color
Surrealism Sculpture
Objectives
● Properly used handbuilding methods (pinch, slabs, solid/hollowed
out, coils). Even thickness of clay. No broken elements or cracks
from improper score/slip or hollowing out.

● Object(s) relate to ideas associated with surrealism (dreams,
fantasy, subconscious). Interesting Form that is viewed in the
round and is 3D, breaking out into planes in multiple directions.

● Sculpted in a manner to “fool the eye”, shoe appears realistic.
Cannot tell difference between clay and actual objects
● Exact/extremely close replication of model objects
Surface Design Plates
Project Objectives:
● Create a plate that has a portrait on it that is either slip
inlay or sgraffito
● Create a pattern background on the plate that is using
the wiping back or stencil technique
● Create a 3rd layer on the plate with a technique you
have not used previously (slip inlay, sgraffito, stencil,
wiping back, additive). Portrait must be of yourself or
family member. NO FAMOUS
PEOPLE/FRIENDS/SIGNIFICANT OTHERS.
● Create a visually interesting composition and design
with your imagery
● Create a plate that is well crafted with 3+ layers of
underglaze
● Create a cup that has 1 surface design technique on it
(slip inlay, sgraffito, stencil, wiping back, additive).
CUP MUST MATCH PLATE IN DESIGN/CONCEPT
● Glaze your plate and cup.
