SafeAccess and NAV 7 trolley for Rope access

DOC074-UK-17.04.27

1. Description
The SafeAccess anchoring device is permanently installed on a building or other structure which
needs to be maintained by rope access.

The SafeAccess consists of an aluminium rail fixed with brackets to the structure of the building.

Fig. 1 MHS060 SafeAccess rail

One to 4 users are connected to the rail by means of a NAV 7 trolley, one user per trolley. The trolleys roll
along the rail.

2. Declaration of conformity
Fallprotec certifies that the rigid anchor device SafeAccess has been tested and approved according to
the EN795 type D 2012 standard.

The rail is designed to be used by 4 persons working simultaneously on the system by means of the NAV
7 trolley. (Maximum 2 users between 2 brackets.)

Users must be certified rope access technicians. At least one technician must be IRATA2 trained or
equivalent, in order to execute a rescue operation if needed.

3. Strength of the fixing

A competent person will check the strength of the structure in relationship with the forces transmitted by
the SafeAccess when a fall is stopped or a main rope is broken.
The components of the SafeAccess withstand without permanent deformation the forces indicated in the
table below and present a safety coefficient of two.

4. Installing SafeAcces
The SafeAccess rail is installed on the ceiling or onto the façade. The rail is installed horizontally. Distance
between the façade and the rail must be determined according to the building characteristics and project
specifications. The maximal distance between two fixings is 4 meters. The maximal distance between the
junction and the fixing is 500 mm.

5. Initial checks
The following checks are mandatory before using the SafeAccess.
o The user must be in good physical condition, and not be susceptible to vertigo.
o The user must have a rope access certificate issued by a competent organism.
o A minimum of two people is required to work together on the rail under visual contact between
each other, so that each one can assist the other in the event of an incident.
o A rescue plan must be in place to evacuate the person within 15 minutes in case of having an
unconscious worker in order to avoid “suspension trauma”. The rescue material must be easily
accessible and be located in the vicinity from the System.
o No more than 2 people may be connected between two fixings at the same time.
o Each user must be equipped with all necessary elements according to the rope access techniques.

o On arrival in the work area, or whenever the user attaches to the rail, he is required to check:

1) That the equipment is in good conditions (Harness, ropes, karabiners etc.).

2) That the working zone under the rail has been delimited to avoid other persons being injured
in case Rope access operatives let fall any tool etc.

3) The following checks shall be done on the NAV 7 trolley:

- The anchor eye should turn freely.
- The fixing bolts of the the rollers must be locked.
- The connector/karabiner should close automatically
- The trolley should move easily when rolling on the rail.
The system must be immediately put out of service if the user notes one or more anomalies to the
points indicated above. The repair must be done by a competent person.

6. Using the SafeAccess rail

o The trolley is permanently installed on the rail when both ends of rail are fitted with fixed end stops.

Fig. 3 Tilting end stop

If needed, trolley may be temporarily installed on the rail, so that users can introduce it every time they will
use the system, by using tilting end stops. While doing this operation (as well as ropes rigging) user must
be well secured onto an appropriate anchor point.

o Primary and secondary ropes must be directly connected to the anchor eye of the NAV7 trolley see
picture below.

Secondary
Rope

In order to ensure 2 anchor points for

each rope, the rigging principle
“two anchor points / two ropes” can be
done with one single NAV 7 trolley.

Fig. 5 Rigging of ropes

o The trolley must move smoothly.

o If needed, user can fix the trolley in a specific point of the rail by means of 2 rubber brakes installed on
the side. User screw them in or out to lock and unlock it respectively.

7. Prohibited use
ø Only one user working at height, but without the support of a second person able to provide
assistance if needed.
ø More than 4 persons attached to the rail simultaneously.
ø More than 2 persons attached to the rail between 2 brackets
ø Deposits of ice on the rail
ø Temperatures lower than -20 °C
ø If lightning or any other potentially dangerous exceptional climatic conditions.
ø It is strictly prohibited to use the system outside the limits specified in this document or
outside any other situation for which it is designed.
ø It is forbidden to use the Safeaccess Rail as grounding of welding machine.

8. Caution
• If the equipment is sold outside the country of origin, the dealer will provide the user
instructions, the maintenance instructions for periodic examinations as well as the instructions
for repair in the language of the region where the SafeAccess is used.
• The location where the End of the rail SafeAccess is installed must be chosen so that the user
does not risk a fall when he engages the trolley.
• One single person attaches to the NAV7 trolley at the same time. ONLY: In case of a rescue
operation, rescuer and victim could be attached to the same trolley.
• The markings are on the NAV7 trolleys; the markings must be legible anytime.

9. Life span of the installation

All the components of the system are manufactured from stainless steel and anodised aluminium, which
have a great resistance to the atmospheric degradation. The operational life depends of the building
structure and of its capability to maintain its physical properties in the course of time.

10. Marking
The NAV 7 trolley is marked as follow:
FALLPROTEC
The type of trolley: NAV 7
Serial number and the two last digit of the year of manufacturing
Standard number: EN795 Type D
An icon to read the manual before using the SafeAccess.

11. Maintenance and inspection

If the system is used in a dusty environment, the trolleys must be cleaned with water and detergent.
The ball bearings are in steel type 2RS greased for lifetime. The rail can be cleaned with water and
detergent or with a sprayed solvent. The trolleys are stored in a dry place and are lubricated once a
year.

The SafeAccess rail must be inspected by a qualified person at least once a year, as well as after every
fall. The safety of the users depends on the maintenance the equipment.
A competent person will check the legibility of the trolleys engravings.

Any modification of or addition to the equipment can only be carried out after the prior written
agreement of FALLPROTEC.
