Farm Tools, Implements and Equipment play very important role in horticulture operations. Their
availability makes the work much easier and faster. However, even if one may have the most sophisticated
tools and implements, but does not know how to use them, they are useless. In order to do horticultural
operations successfully, one must have good working knowledge of the tools, implements and equipment
before using them.
A. Hand Tools -usually light and used without the help of animals and machines. They are being used
in performing farm activities which involve in small areas like school garden and home garden.

B. Farm Implements – these are accessories that are being pulled by working animals or mounted
to a machinery (Hand tractor, tractor); which are usually in preparation of the land. These are
usually made of special kind of metal.

C. Farm Equipment – these are machineries used in horticultural operations, especially in


vegetables production. They are used in land preparation and in transporting farm inputs and
products. This equipment needs a highly skilled operator to use.
Examples:

Hand Tractor – is used to pull a plow and


harrow in preparing a large area of land.

Four Wheel Tractor – used to pull a disc


plow and a disc harrow in preparing much
bigger area of land

Water Pump – used to draw irrigation


water from a source.

2.3 Perform preventive maintenance by following the procedures in sharpening and
oiling farm tools and equipment
2.4 Store tools and equipment in designated areas in line with farm procedures.

At the end of the lesson you are expected to:
a. Identified appropriate farm tools, machineries and equipment according to its usage,
b. Perform preventive maintenance
c. Perform horticultural operations using the available farm hand tools on your
backyard and have a proper documentation.
d. Do an urban gardening using recycled materials such as empty bottles. Planting
materials should be a vegetable of your choice.
e. A scheduled visit will be conducted to monitor and evaluate your performance.

Activity 2. Use of Farm Tools


Instructions:
a. The student will do the following:
• Make a list of farm tools used in
➢ Land Preparation
➢ Cultivation
➢ Plant propagation
➢ Harvesting
b. Write the functions of each tool.
c. Compile the listings in one folder and submit to your teacher (Short size bond paper and
Folder).
d. After submission the student will perform the following instruction:
➢ Select and identify the tools in land preparation and demonstrate its use.
➢ Select and identify the tools in cultivation and demonstrate its use.
➢ Select and identify the tools in plant propagation and demonstrate its use.
➢ Select and identify the tools in harvesting and demonstrate its use.

Activity 3. Urban gardening

A. The student is required to have an urban garden. The use of recyclable materials is highly
encouraged. Planting materials should be any available vegetable plants. After the grading
period, the urban garden will be evaluated by the teacher. During the visit, the student needs to
answer relevant questions and perform actual use of farm tools. This will be part of the
performance task of the student.
