Calculations:

A. Volume of Na2S2O3 dispensed (mL)

(11.2 – 0) mL = 11.2 mL

B. Moles of Na2S2O3 (mol)

Volume of Na2S2O3 x (mol/L Na2S2O3)

0.0112 L x (0.02512 mol/L Na2S2O3) = 2.81344 x 10-4 mol Na2S2O3

C. Moles of I3-

Guide Questions:

1. Is there a relationship between the temperature and the dissolved oxygen

concentration? If so, describe their relation.

Yes, there is a relationship between the temperature and the dissolved

oxygen concentration, dissolved oxygen concentration is inversely
proportionate with the temperature because when the solubility of water
decreases, the temperature increases and vice versa. This indicates that
deeper, cooler water requires less dissolved oxygen to achieve 100% air
saturation than warmer surface water.

2. What is the importance of knowing the amount of dissolved oxygen in water

quality?

One of the most primary indicators of water quality is dissolved oxygen (DO).
It is necessary for fish and other aquatic species to survive because too much
or too little dissolved oxygen can harm aquatic life and degrade water quality.
The aerating action of winds causes oxygen to dissolve in surface water.
Aquatic plant photosynthesis releases oxygen into the water as a byproduct.

3. What is the standard acceptable range of dissolved oxygen (DO) set by the
government agencies for water quality?

According to World Health Organization, depending on the temperature

requirements for specific aquatic species, the criterion values range from 5 to
9.5 mg l-1 for various life stages of species, i.e. a minimum dissolved oxygen
content of 5-6 mg l-1 for warm-water biota and 6.5-9.5 mg l-1 for cold-water
biota. Higher oxygen concentrations are also important in the early stages of
life. On the other hand, according to DENR, most fish cannot survive for
lengthy periods of time at levels below 3 milligrams per liter (mg O2/L), while
levels over 5 mg O2/L are considered ideal. Hypoxia occurs when oxygen
levels fall below 1 mg/L, and anoxia occurs when oxygen is completely
absent (officially known as anaerobic).
