LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, I can:

a) explain briefly the characteristics of the arts and


crafts of India, Pakistan and Tibet through class
discussion;
b) illustrate creatively any arts of India, Pakistan and
Tibet through a digital / manual art; and
c) show appreciation about the arts of India, Pakistan
and Tibet through class sharing.
Indian arts show the great cultures and
traditions of their people.

Indian craftsmen are well-known for


beautifully designed metalworks, jewelries,
ivories, utensils, fabric and woven materials.

PAINTING
Painting in India is a medium stating
spiritual ideas. Indian painting is done on
scrolls. It shows the rewards of good and evil
deeds in the world.

By the mid-20th century, Indian


painting has become more international; and
Indian artists were working in different foreign
styles.
SCULPTURE AND CARVINGS
Sculpture is the most important
art in India. It is more of a decoration
rather than an architectural setting.

It is intricate and elaborate in


detail, mostly are complicated, many
armed-figured drawn from the pantheon
of Hindu and Jain gods.
Mathura Buddha

This seated on a lion throne


and carved out of a sandstone is
Mathura, a city in Northern India. It is
famous because this city is the center
of Buddhist sculptural activity from the
2nd century BC to th 6th Century AD.
Queen Maya giving birth to Buddha

This shows the Queen named Maya


who is giving birth to Siddhartha Gautama, who
would become Buddha “Enlighted One”. She is
holding a branch of the sacred sal tree, in the
manner of an Indian fertility goddess, before
Buddha is born from her right side.
ARCHITECTURE
Hindu style of architecture is
marked by complex ornaments and the
use of pyramidal roofs. It is mostly of
marble-white balanced structures.

Silk and Cotton Textiles


Silk and cotton textiles, printed and
embroidered as well as loom figures are one of
the famous Indian crafts.

India is well-known for its richly colored


woolen shawls, silk prints, and luxurious
brocades.

Rangoli Art

Rangoli is a type of art or


decoration that is drawn on the
ground or sidewalk in front of a
house. It serves a purpose; it is
used to "enlighten" or welcome
Hindu gods into the home.
Pakistan art could be generally described as a
transition from Hindu and Buddhist influence to Muslim
dominated-art as Muslim in Pakistan’s religion.

The design elements are a mix of Hindustani art


and Persian-Islamic style. However, after the
independence of Pakistan, many modern buildings were
built which reflect the newly-found identity of the nation.

neighboring countries like China, Nepal,
and India.

MANDALA ART
An art form that has been practiced for ages,
symbolizing the universe and thought to promote a
pleasant environment. I'm talking to the Tibetan
Buddhist holy art of Mandala (which means circle in
Sanskrit), which monks create out of millions of
grains of colored sand or paint. A bit similar to
Rangoli made by Hindus.
