The yield on the Italian 10-year BTP rebounded to 1.9%, hovering around the 20-month highs touched on
February 7th amid expectations of faster monetary policy tightening. January’s consumer inflation figures
from the US came at 7.5%, surpassing market expectations of 7.3% and increasing the likelihood that the
Federal Reserve will tighten monetary conditions at an accelerated pace. At the same time, the European
Commission revised its 2022 inflation forecasts to 3.5% from 2.2%, furthering bets that the ECB will
increase rates this year. In the meantime, investors remain wary of the risk premium on Italian bonds due
to political uncertainty and large debt. While Sergio Mattarella’s re-election as head of state guaranteed
political stability in the short-term, the lack of consensus displayed by the Italian lawmakers raised
concerns over the government’s ability to efficiently implement reforms with EU funds amid higher
borrowing costs.

likelihood that the debt will be repaid.
