* WHAT I CAN DO
COVID-19 has caused damages to the world even up to taking lives of many. Death
due to this pandemic follows an exponential pattern among nations across the globe.
In times like this, what can you do to help hinder the spread of a deadly virus? Express
your answer through an essay.

1. Refer to the Rubrics which will be used in scoring your essay.

2. Use a separate sheet of paper for your essay writing.

HOW TO HELP HINDER THE SPREAD OF A DEADLY VIRUS

COVID-19 can be transferred before symptoms appear. Even though some persons
with the disease show no symptoms, they might still spread it. However, there are ways to
help hinder the spread of Covid-19 and to protect yourself. These pointers can assist you
and others in being safe:

(1) Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Getting vaccinated can help you from
contracting and spreading COVID-19. If you do contract the virus, being vaccinated can
help protect you from serious disease. Ensure that children aged 5 and up receive the
COVID-19 vaccination. Vaccinating children and teenagers helps to prevent the
transmission of COVID-19 to elderly relatives, younger siblings, and acquaintances who
are unable to receive the vaccination. It also aids in the prevention of major sickness in
children and teenagers. If you have been vaccinated and live in an area where COVID-19
is spreading, you should (2) always wear a face mask or face cover with at least two layers
while going out in public. Regardless of how active COVID-19 is in your neighborhood, if
you are not fully vaccinated or have a weaker immune system, you should always wear a
face mask indoors in public.

Even if you've been vaccinated or are wearing a mask, (3) keep at least 6 feet (2
meters) away from individuals who aren't in your family. (4) Stay away from poorly
ventilated interior rooms and busy places. If feasible, open windows to let in fresh air if
you're indoors. Exposure to respiratory droplets can be reduced by spending time outside
or in well-ventilated settings. (5) Wash your hands at least 20 seconds with soap and
running water many times a day. This should be done before eating or preparing meals,
as well as after using the restroom and coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. If soap
and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol).

(6) When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your
sleeve (not your hands). When a person sneezes or coughs, infectious droplets are
discharged. After you've used the tissue, throw it away. (7) Unwashed hands should not
be used to contact your face, eyes, nose, or mouth. (8) Personal belongings such as cups,
dining utensils, towels, and beds should not be shared. Soap and water should be used
3
to wash whatever you've used. (9) Doorknobs, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, toilets,
phones, tablets, countertops, and other "high-touch" places in the house should all be
cleaned. Use a home cleaning spray and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. (10)
Understand the signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Call your doctor if you start to
experience any symptoms.

MODULE 22. Solving Real-life Problems Involving Exponential Functions, Equations

and Inequalities

*WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Reflect and answer the following:

1. What are the common application of exponential functions, equations and inequalities to
reallife situations?
(1) The common application of exponential function is the estimation of population in a
certain area. (2) Then the common application of exponential equations is by identifying how long
would it take for the initial population to reach a certain amount of estimated population. (3) Lastly,
the common application of exponential inequalities is finding how long it would take to reach the
certain population growth which is limited to certain value.
2. In solving real-life problems involving exponential functions, equations and inequalities, what
do you think are the important skills that you should have to solve the problems?
In solving real-life problems involving exponential functions, equations, and inequalities the
important skills which required are as follows:
WISDOM: One must have a bright mind to think about two things while solving a problem:

4
(1) I the problem is getting solved.
(2) if the solution of one problem is not creating another problem.
In other words, require a bright mind’s eye to visualize the present and future.
LOGIC AND PRACTICALITY: While solving a problem, you must think practically. Problems may be
complex and tricky. The problem should have to simplify rather than making it more complicated.
So, think about three things – why, how, and what.
CALMNESS: Do not panic in case of a problem. Panicking increases the problem instead of solving
it. Problems are a part of life and must be dealt with calmness.
3. Enumerate the different steps that you should consider solving real-life problems involving
exponential functions, equations, and inequalities.

(1) Identifying and understanding the problem. (2) Convert the problem into
mathematical model. (3) Choose the appropriate solving method. (4) Check and validate the
results.

*WHAT I CAN DO? Exponential Decay

a. Find the pressure on the roof of Grand Hyatt Hotel Manila (one of the tallest buildings in the
Philippines if its height is 1,043 feet.
Let a be 1013 hPa. The rate (r) that is decreasing is 12% or 0.12 in decimal form. Also, since it is
decreasing, the value should be negative, -0.12.

Since the rate (r) decreases per 1000m. It can be denoted as .

The h is 1043 ft. Also, its t is the distance of the sea level to the pressure on the roof. Thus, 𝑡=ℎ
Convert h measured at 1043 ft. to meters by multiplying it to 0.3048 (1𝑓𝑡=0.3048 𝑚) ℎ=(1043)
(0.3048) ℎ=317.9064 ℎ≈317.91

Solve for the 𝑦(317.91) of the function:

b. Find the pressure on the top of Mount Pulag which is 2,922 meters tall.

Let a be 1013 hPa. The rate (r) that is decreasing is 12% or 0.12 in decimal form. Also,
since it is decreasing, the value should be negative, -0.12.

Since the rate (r) decreases per 1000 m. it can be denoted as:

The h is 2922 meter. Also, its t is the distance of the sea level to the pressure on the
top of Mount Pulag. Thus, 𝑡 = ℎ

Solve for the 𝑦(2922) of the function:

5
𝑦(2922) = 𝑎𝑒𝑟ℎ

≈ 713.39

Answer: The pressure on the top of the Mount Pulag is 713.39 hPa.

*ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
Solve the following problems.

1. How much money will you have after 5 years, if you invest ₱2,000.00 at the
rate of 2% compounded monthly?

Given: 𝑃= ₱2,000, r=2%, t=5, n=12

𝐴=2210.16

Answer: Therefore, the person will have ₱2,210.16 after 5

years.
2. At the start of the experiment, there are 400 bacteria. If the bacteria follow an
exponential growth pattern with 𝑟 = 0.03, what will be the population after 6 hours?
How long will it take for the population to double?

Given: 𝑎=400, as the initial population of bacteria

𝑟=0.03, as the percent of if growth rate
𝑡=6, represent the time passed

𝑦=𝑎(1+𝑟)𝑡

a. 𝑦=400(1+0.03)6

=478

Hence, the population after 6 hours is approximately 478.

When the initial population is doubles the given will be like this:

𝐴=400, 𝑟=0.03, 𝑦=800

b. 800=400(1+0.03)𝑡
800=400(1.03𝑡)

400(1.03𝑡)=800

1.03𝑡 =2

6
𝑡=23.4

Answer: The population after 6 hours is approximately 478. It will take about
23.4 hours for the population to double.
3. Consider a population of bacteria that grows according to the function 𝑓(𝑡) =
500𝑒0.05𝑡, where 𝑡 is measured in minutes. How many bacteria are present in the
population after 4 hours?

1. You find a skull in a nearby tribe ancient burial site and with the help of a
spectrometer, you discovered that the skull contains 9% of the C-14 found in a modern
skull. Assuming that the half-life of C-14 (radiocarbon) is 5,730 years, how old is the skull?

Solution: The half-life of the 𝐶 − 14 is given by:

𝑁 = 9%𝑁0, since the skull contains 9% of the 𝐶 − 14 found that of initial value
ℎ = 5730, represents the year

Based on the given:

𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡

Answer: Therefore, the skull is about 19,906 years old.

2. Suppose that the population of a colony of bacteria increases exponentially. At the

start of an experiment, there are 10,000 bacteria, and one hour later, the population has
increased to 10,500. How long will it take for the population to reach 25,000? Round off your
answer to the nearest hour.

Solution: The starting of the experiment, the number of bacteria is 10,000. After 1 hour
the population of bacteria increases which are 10, 500. It is very clear that in 1 hour
bacteria population increases which are 500.

Consider that the number of hours is represented by .

Notice that at the starting of the experiment the number of bacteria is 10,000 so that if we
need to find the total number of hours at which bacteria becomes 25,000, subtract the
number of bacteria at the starting of an experiment by 25000.

25000−1000=15000

is the number of hours

500 is the increase in bacteria in hours
15000 is the increased population the equation becomes

500𝑥 = 15000

Simplify for x: 500𝑥 = 15000

500𝑥 ÷ 500 = 15000 ÷ 500
𝑥 = 30

Answer: Hence, the number of hours required for the population of bacteria reached 25000 is
30 hours.
