1.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The TCAS791 is an airborne traffic alert and collision avoidance (TCAS I) system that advises the flight
crew where to look for aircraft that may pose a collision threat. It is intended for use by regional airlines
and corporate and general aviation aircraft. TCAS791 alerts the flight crew to nearby transponder
equipped aircraft and assists the pilot in the visual acquisition of aircraft that represent a danger. The
objective is to protect a volume of airspace, defined by time, around the aircraft.

Figure 1-1. Protection Zone

Traffic information, out to a selected range of either 5, 10, or 20 nautical miles, is graphically displayed on
a control display unit (CDU). The display uses specified symbology with colors, shapes and text to convey
information concerning traffic. It indicates the relative position of threat aircraft. The system provides both
a voice message and visual traffic advisory (TA) alert when it predicts that an aircraft may present a
collision threat. The voice message ("TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC") is enunciated over a cockpit speaker or
headset.
1-1
Rev. F
TCAS791
Installation Manual
TCAS791 is an active system that operates as an air-to-air interrogation device. The TCAS equipment
interrogates transponders in the surrounding airspace similar to ground based radars. When replies to
these active interrogations are received, the responding aircraft’s range, altitude, and closure rates are
computed to plot traffic location and predict collision threats.

1.3 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

The TCAS791 System consists of the following main components:
• Transmitter Receiver Computer (TRC) Unit, TRC791 (or TRC791A)

1.3.3 NY156 L-Band Directional Antenna P/N 805-10003-001
The L-band directional antenna is a teardrop-shaped antenna. Connections are made through two TNC
and one BNC connector. The antenna is sealed against environmental extremes and is non-repairable. To
ensure a tight seal between the airframe and antenna, an O-ring seal (i.e., an O-ring groove for an
MS28775-044 O-ring) has been incorporated into the design. An O-ring is supplied with each antenna. To
fit specific airframes, a special adapter plate is also required. Refer to table 1-5 for a list of installation kits
associated with various airframes. For aircraft not listed, contact the aircraft manufacturer for information
relative to the radius of the area where the antenna is to be mounted.

INSTALLATION
2.1 INTRODUCTION
NOTE
The information and instructions provided in this section are directed toward fixed-
wing aircraft. The complex nature of rotorcraft installations (e.g., antenna placement;
composite versus metal blades, available ground plane, rotor mast interference, strike
kits, etc.) requires that each installation be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Before
starting a rotorcraft installation, contact L-3 Avionics Systems Field Service
Engineering at 1-800-453-0288 or 1-616-949-6600.
Installation must be made by qualified personnel, in conformance with applicable government regulations.
The information furnished is for convenience only.

2.2 UNPACKING, INSPECTION AND STORAGE

CAUTION
The CD605 and TRC are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) and may be
damaged if not handled correctly. Do not remove protective covers from
electrical connectors during unpacking. Touching an exposed connector may
cause electrostatic damage to equipment.
Carefully unpack the system and note any damage to shipping containers or equipment. Visually inspect
each component for evidence of damage. Compare the equipment received with that noted on the packing
list. Immediately report any missing items or evidence of damage to the carrier making the delivery. To
justify a claim, retain the original shipping container and all packing materials.
Every effort should be made to retain the original shipping containers for storage. If the original containers
are not available, a separate cardboard container should be prepared that is large enough to accommodate
sufficient packing material to prevent movement. The ambient temperature of the storage area should not
fall below -55° C (-65° F) or rise above 70°C (158° F).

2.3 ANTENNA LOCATION

Location is an important factor for maximum antenna performance. Optimum location for a particular
aircraft type is usually available from the aircraft manufacturer. In selecting a location, consider the
following:
NY152 Mount the antenna on the bottom rear of the aircraft. The best coverage
L-Band Omni- will ordinarily be obtained with the antenna installed at the lowest spot
Directional (in level flight) on the bottom centerline of the aircraft. The antenna should
be mounted on the aircraft with at least 20 dB isolation (about 30 inches)
from other L-band frequency antennas. The ground-plane should be as
large as possible, we recommend a 30-inch ground-plane diameter.

2-1
Rev. F
TCAS791
Installation Manual

NY156 The mounting site should be on the top forward fuselage, as close to the
L-Band Directional centerline as possible, and within -10° of the in-flight horizon (see figure
2-1). The optimum mounting point for maximum coverage is as far forward
as possible without exceeding the -10° forward pitch. If necessary,
consideration should be given to relocating other antennas to obtain the
furthest forward location for the TCAS directional antenna. The antenna
should be mounted on the aircraft with at least 20 dB isolation (about 30
inches) from other L-band frequency antennas and 24 inches from other
antennas or obstructions. . The ground-plane should be as large as possible,
we recommend a 30-inch ground-plane diameter.

Figure 2-1. TCAS Directional Antenna Mounting Location, Fixed-Wing Aircraft

Rotorcraft. The complex nature of rotorcraft installations (e.g., antenna placement; composite versus
metal blades, available ground plane, rotor mast interference, strike kits, etc.) requires that each
installation be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Before starting a rotorcraft installation, contact Field
Service Engineering at 1-800-453-0288 or 1-616-949-6600. The following is a list of possible problems and
solutions that you may encounter during a rotorcraft installation:
• Obstacles - Obstacles such as rotor masts, transmissions, skids and other objects that
project from the aircraft can cause phantom reflections. Install antenna as
far away from such obstacles as is possible.
• Bearing Error & Strike kits can cause bearing errors and blind spots. Install antenna as
Blind Spots - far away from such obstacle's as is possible.
• Reflection - To minimize RF Reflections apply RF absorption material. To purchase
absorption material refer to rotorcraft in paragraph 1.7, equipment required
but not supplied.
• Ground Planes - Adequate ground planes and proper bonding are required for proper
directional antenna operation. The bond between antenna ground, doubler
plate and airframe ground must be less than 2.5 milli-ohms as mentioned in
AC 43.13-1B. In the case of composite aircraft a ground plane can be
manufactured out of aluminum, copper mesh or equivalent. There is also a
copper conductive spray material that may be used. To purchase copper
conductive coating refer to rotorcraft in paragraph 1.7, equipment required
but not supplied.

Rev. F
TCAS791
Installation Manual
2.4 TRC UNIT LOCATION
Typically the TRC Unit is installed in the electronics bay. In selecting a location, consider the following:
Cable Length Cable runs should be as short as practicable in order to minimize potential
electrical interference. Cable length to antennas must not exceed 40 ft (see
table 2-1).
Cooling While the TRC has no special cooling requirements, it should be mounted to
permit adequate ventilation. Caution should be observed to not inhibit
airflow from the rear mounted fan. Allow at least three inches (8 cm) of rear
clearance.
Pressurized Aircraft The TRC may mount inside or outside the pressure vessel. The TRC
contains no batteries or potentially explosive components and will operate
up to 55,000 ft.

2.5 CDU LOCATION

The CDU should be mounted in a location easily accessible and clearly visible to the pilot. In selecting a
location, consider the following:
Magnetic Effect The display must be mounted at least six inches away from any equipment
which exceeds the magnetic effects allowed for in DO160C category Z.
Panel Depth Adequate depth must be available behind the instrument panel to allow for
the display, the display connector, and excess display cable. Remember, a
service loop is necessary to allow access to the display connector when
removing or inserting it into the instrument panel. An instrument
mounting clamp is provided in the CDU installation kit.
Cooling While the display has no special cooling requirements, it should be mounted
to permit adequate air circulation. Caution should be observed to not
inhibit airflow from the top mounted fan. Allow at least ¼ inch of clearance
above and below the instrument for air circulation.
Viewing Angle The CD605 provides a ± 20° horizontal viewing angle and a ± 50° vertical
viewing angle. The most favorable mounting position would be near eye
level and no more than arms length from the principal user of the
instrument.
Readability CD605 is designed to provide sufficient luminance to be readable in
environments exposed to direct sunlight.

techniques and practices.

2. This section provides installation information for TCAS791 using the

CD605 Control Display Unit. Additional interfaces may be approved
using an alternate display device such as an EFIS or VSI display.
Refer to the appropriate appendix to interface approved alternate
displays.

The installer will supply and fabricate all system cables. Appendix A defines the electrical characteristics
of all input and output signals and identifies the cable requirements for each signal. Paragraphs 2.6.1,
2.6.2 and 2.6.3 describe the special requirements for antenna, display and heading sensor cables. Required

Pinout information is also provided on figures 2-4 (TRC - J1), 2-5 (TRC - J2), and 2-6 (CDU - J1). These
figures can be used to document opposite end termination from each connector. Refer to figure 2-7 for
interconnect wiring information. Wire-marking identification is at the discretion of the installer.
The length and routing of the external cables must be carefully studied and planned before attempting
installation of the equipment. Observe the following precautions:
• Note the signal characteristics of flag lines and discrete signal inputs; an external relay may be
required to provide proper polarity or "sense" of the signals.
• Check to ensure CDU is compatible with the avionics cockpit lighting. Both 5 VDC and 28 VDC
models are available.
• All cable routing should be kept as short and direct as possible.
• Avoid sharp bends.
• Avoid routing the cables too close to aircraft control cables.
• Avoid routing cable near the ADF, comm radio, or transponder antenna cables (allow at least a 12
inch separation).
• Bundle all cables terminating at the TRC mounting tray and attach to the rack with strain relief.
• Avoid routing cable near power sources (e.g., 400 Hertz generators, trim motors, etc.) and near
power for fluorescent lighting.
• Observe all wiring notes on interconnect wiring diagram.
After fabricating the cables and before installing the equipment, use the interconnect diagram to verify
continuity between each pin and its opposite end termination. Check resistance to ground between each
connector pin. When a path to ground is detected, verify its validity.

2.6.1 Antenna Cables
NOTES
1. Use of any cable not meeting specifications voids all system warranties.
2. If you fabricate your own cables, you must verify that the attenuation and
VSWR does not exceed the specified values.
3. To add strain relief and alleviate stress caused by aircraft vibration, place 4-
6 inches of heat shrink tubing over each antenna connector and cable.
The NY156 TCAS Directional Antenna requires three cable assemblies; sum (Sigma Port), bit probe (Probe
Port) and difference (Delta Port). Cable attenuation for the sum and difference ports must not exceed 2.5
dB. Table 2-1 identifies U. S. vendors who sell approved cables by the foot. Table 2-2 provides a cable to
connector cross reference. RG142B (Electronic Cable Specialists 3C142B) or equivalent must be used for
the bit probe cable. Attenuation for the bit probe cable must not exceed 6 dB. VSWR, on cables attached to
the sum, probe, and difference ports, must not exceed 1.5:1. At the antenna, each connector has an
identifying color band. To ensure the cables are properly matched, affix the following marking at the
termination points of each cable:
• Sum (Sigma) Port A "blue" marking band at antenna; connector designator "P8" and a blue
(Forward ANT Connector) marking band at TRC. (TNC connectors at each end.)
• Probe (Bit) Port A "black" marking band at antenna; connector designator "P9" and a
(Center ANT Connector) black marking band at TRC. (BNC connectors at each end.)
• Difference (Delta) Port A "red" marking band at antenna; connector designator "P6" and a red
(Rear ANT Connector) marking band at TRC. (TNC connectors at each end.)

The NY152 (L-Band Omnidirectional) antenna requires coax cable with BNC connectors at the antenna
and TNC connectors at the TRC. Cable attenuation must not exceed 2.5 dB. VSWR must be better than
1.5:1. Table 2-1 identifies U. S. vendors who sell approved cables by the foot. Table 2-3 provides a cable to
connector cross reference. At the TRC termination points, affix connector designator "P7".

When routing antenna cables, observe the following precautions:

• All cable routing should be kept as short (see table 2-1 ) and direct as possible.
• Avoid sharp bends.
• Avoid routing cable near power sources (e.g., 400 Hertz generators, trim motors, etc.) and near
power for fluorescent lighting.
• Avoid routing cable near ADF antenna cable (allow at least a 12-inch separation).
• Observe all wiring notes on interconnect wiring diagram (figure 2-7).
• Use pressurized bulkhead connectors certified to 30 psi or greater where needed.

is ON and the altitude VALID. After making the selection, verify
that the system response has recognized that type.
2. When specifying the Sperry RT100, ensure the RT100 is not off-scale.
Place the RT100 in self-test and verify that the altimeter reads near
100 feet. Execute the RADALT RT100 command while the RT100
indicates 100 feet and then verify that the system response
recognized the RT100 near 100 feet.

These commands, can be typed in either uppercase or lowercase letters. Ctrl+R repeats the last command
once. To continually repeat the last command, press Ctrl+L.
3.2.2 Checkout Procedure
The TT391 Flightline Tester simulates both a ground based secondary surveillance radar (SSR) and an
airborne transponder. With the TCAS unit under test set to 50,000 ft (via the GROUND TEST command),
the TT391 will simulate two targets; a Traffic Advisory (i.e., a solid amber circle in TCAS symbology) at ¼
nm and Other Traffic (i.e., open white diamond in TCAS symbology) at 4.5 nm. Both targets will be
displayed in level flight at own aircraft altitude (i.e., "00" displayed above the traffic symbol).
If the indications given in the following procedure, except for the Flightline Tester, are not obtained, refer
to the troubleshooting procedures in Chapter 4 (para 4.4). If indications given for the Flightline Tester are
not obtained, refer to the maintenance section of the TT391 Instruction Manual.

NOTE
Do not run the pilot-initiated self-test (step 20) before calibrating the
directional antenna (step 7).

open white diamond in TCAS symbology) at 4.5 nm. Both targets will be displayed in level flight
at own aircraft altitude (i.e., "00" displayed above the traffic symbol).

NOTES
1. If the CDU reflects a gross error in target bearing, check the NY156 top
directional antenna cables at TRC connectors J6 (difference port) and J8
(sum port). They may be reversed. A further indication of this condition
would be a target that moved in a counter-clockwise direction when the
TT391 is moved in a clockwise direction.
2. Multiple targets or a faulty bearing may result from multipath distortion
(see step 1).
3. During these tests, the TCAS791 may detect and display other active
targets.
4. To obtain a better line of sight, it may be necessary to elevate the patch
antenna.
d. Set the TT391 POWER switch to the OFF. Repeat procedure from each test point. Step 16 can be
done from the last test point.
NOTE
To prevent TCAS from tracking the movement of the testset, it is necessary to
set the TT391 POWER switch to OFF after completing each procedure.

4.5 SYSTEM MESSAGES
TCAS firmware is designed to generate messages associated with a particular condition or step in the
program. These messages, which are intended to assist factory technicians in determining what actions
may have preceded a system failure, can be displayed by invoking the DUMP ERROR command (see Post
Installation Checkout, para 3.2.1). For your convenience, we have listed the more common messages in
table 4-2. Where appropriate, procedures that may assist in problems that have been associated with
installations are provided. When a severe error occurs TCAS will fail. Most system messages track normal
operation by simply pointing out a condition or step in the program.

CAUTION

Do not invoke the CLEAR ERROR command unless directed to do so by Field Service
Engineering. Executing this command will erase potentially valuable information for future
troubleshooting.

APPENDIX A
TCAS791 INTERFACE
SIGNAL & CABLE CHARACTERISTICS
A.1 INTRODUCTION
This appendix defines the electrical characteristics of all input and output signals to the TCAS791 System.
Sufficient data is included to perform an electrical load analysis for the aircraft. The interface
characteristics contained in this appendix are fully compatible with ARINC specifications where noted.
Connection information identifies the unit (TRC, CDU, or DRU), connector-pin and signal names as they
appear on the interconnect wiring diagram or, in the case of antenna cables, the connector type (e.g., BNC
or TNC).
NOTE
External isolation diodes are not required and SHOULD NOT be installed.

SIGNAL CHARACTERISTICS

ARINC 429 External Interface The TCAS791 has three ARINC 429 receivers and one transmitter. The
TRC can only receive ARINC 429 data at low speed (12.5 KHz) . The
transmitter operates only at high speed (100 KHz).

The ARINC 429 transmitter is intended to provide an interface with

display devices other than the CD605 (e.g., IVSI, EFIS, WX Radar).

The three ARINC 429 receivers can be used to input data from other
avionics systems. The following labels are supported:

LABEL FUNCTION

INSTALLATION CHECKOUT
USING THE TCAS-201 RAMP TEST SET
C.1 INTRODUCTION
This appendix contains the self test and post installation checkout procedures. Refer to the TCAS791 Pilot’s
Guide for complete operating instructions. The post installation checkout section contains instructions for
doing the checkout procedure with an IFR Systems TCAS-201 Ramp Test Set (with TCAS I firmware).

C.2 POST INSTALLATION CHECKOUT

NOTES
1. This procedure assumes familiarity with the set up and operation of the TCAS
Ramp Test Set and RS-232 terminal device.
2. All test equipment used in completing these tests shall be calibrated in
accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
3. This section provides checkout information for the TCAS791 using the CD605
Control Display Unit. Additional interfaces may be approved using an
alternate display device such as an EFIS or VSI display. Refer to the
appropriate appendix to this manual for information relating to approved
alternate display devices.
This procedure will validate the installation of TCAS791 into the aircraft and verify that the system
performs its intended function.
C.2.1

C.2.1 Using The Terminal Device (e.g., Laptop Computer)

To run post installation checks, a terminal device must be connected to the serial data TEST port (J4)
located on the front of the TRC. TRC connector J4 is a female DB9 receptacle. Only three lines RXD (pin 2),
TXD (pin 3), and GND (pin 5) are required. To communicate with the TRC, the RS-232 terminal device
must be setup as follows:
Baud Rate: 19,200
Parity: None
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1

C-1
Rev. F
TCAS791
Installation Manual
TCAS 791 includes the following commands to help with installation:
NOTE
The TRC must be running software version 1.3 or later to access commands
designated with an asterisk (*). The software version is identified on a tag
attached to the back of the TRC.

429* Displays information about the status of the ARINC 429 external
interface. This information includes channel, speed, and label data (e.g.,
radio altimeter, true heading, magnetic heading, barometric altitude).
The SENSORS command also displays this information.

BAR* Displays current barometric altimeter data including altitude Grey

Code, altitude (feet), and flag (VALID or NOT VALID). If the barometric
altitude is derived from the ARINC 429 interface, that will also be
indicated. The SENSORS command also displays this information.

CAL PROBE Calibrates the directional antenna to the TRC. Execute this command
each time the TRC, directional antenna, or any of the directional
antenna cables (including connectors) have been repaired or replaced.

NOTE
If the TRC is running software version 2.3 or later, the CAL PROBE
function can also be executed by holding in the RANGE button while
powering up the unit (refer to paragraph 4.5).

SPEAK Forces the system to announce "Traffic Traffic". Use this command to
check the interface between the TRC and the aircraft audio system. It is
especially useful when making volume adjustments to the TRC audio
output. TRC audio output may be readjusted to whatever level is desired
using the front panel AUDIO ADJUST control (see figure 1-3).

SWITCHES* Displays information about the status of the switch inputs (e.g., gear,
squat, range, test, GPWS, etc.). The SENSORS command also displays
this information.

TOP {ON|OFF} Enables or disables the top directional antenna to verify operation of the
bottom L-band antenna. Type one of these choices (i.e., TOP ON or TOP
OFF).

RADALT [name]* Selects or displays information about the radio altimeter. The TCAS791
currently supports input from the Collins ALT55/King KRA405, King
KRA10A, Sperry RT100 and ARINC 552 or 552A.
When you enter the RADALT command, information about the radio
altimeter is displayed. This information includes type, flag status, and
height. The SENSORS command also displays this information.
To specify (select) a radio altimeter device, include the type (i.e., ALT55,
551A, 552, KRA10A, or RT100) with the RADALT command (e.g.,
RADALT ALT55).
NOTES
1. Before specifying a radio altimeter device, be certain that the device
is ON and the altitude VALID.

APPENDIX D
TCAS791/HONEYWELL EFIS INTERFACE
MODELS EDZ-805, -815, -816, -818
D.1 INTRODUCTION
This appendix contains specific, supplemental information to interface the TCAS791 Traffic Alert and
Collision Avoidance System (TCAS I) with the Honeywell EDZ-805, -815, -816, -818, hereinafter referred to
as the Honeywell EFIS. This appendix is divided into five sections:

• Section D.2 details the connections between the TCAS791’s Transmitter Receiver Computer (TRC)
and the Honeywell EFIS.

• Section D.3 lists the steps to configure the TCAS791 system software for compatibility with the
Honeywell EFIS display.

• Section D.4 outlines the TCAS791/Honeywell EFIS interface checkout procedures.

• Section D.5 describes the operational impact to the TCAS791 when interfaced with the Honeywell
EFIS.

NOTE
To operate with the Honeywell EFIS, the TRC must be running software
version 1.0 or later. The software version is identified on a tag attached to
the back of the TRC.

TCAS I will interface only to Honeywell EFIS systems configured with the symbol and multi-function
generators identified in table D-1.
NOTE
Every effort has been made to correctly identify the Honeywell part
numbers in table D-1. However, L-3 Avionics Systems cannot be
responsible for changes to Honeywell part numbers. Additional interfaces
may also be approved. Contact Honeywell for the latest information

D.2 TCAS791-to-HONEYWELL EFIS CONNECTIONS

Since the Honeywell EFIS is being used as an alternate display device, remotely-mounted switches must be
installed in the cockpit for TCAS on/off control (toggle), TCAS range selection (momentary), and TCAS test
(momentary). Additionally, a remote toggle switch must be installed for TCAS auto/manual mode selection
if a multi-function display (MFD) is installed as a part of the EFIS System.

Refer to Figure 2-6 for an overview of the complete system interconnect. Refer to Figure D-1 for
connections between the TRC and the Honeywell EFIS.

NOTE

Depending on the cockpit configuration, the signal outputs from the TRC
may be connected to more than one Honeywell EFIS component. Refer to
the appropriate Honeywell EFIS Installation Manuals for specific
termination points and TCAS strap configurations.

D.3 SYSTEM SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION

You must identify the Honeywell EFIS as an alternate display device when it is connected to the TRC.
Perform the following procedure to configure the TCAS791 software for use with the Honeywell EFIS.

NOTE

Refer to the Equipment Required But Not Supplied section

in Chapter 1 for details relating to connecting an RS-232
terminal device.
1. Connect an RS-232 terminal device to the TEST connector (J4) on the TRC.
2. Power up TCAS791 and observe the laptop display. The screen will echo the system status as the
TCAS791 performs its initialization and self-tests.
3. When power up is complete and a blank command line appears, type "DISPLAY HONEYWELL EFIS" and
press ENTER.

The laptop screen should echo "External Display set to: HONEYWELL EFIS" to confirm the changes have
been stored in memory.

NOTE

If you mis-type the display name, or if you enter an invalid

display name, the laptop screen will echo the following:

Invalid External Display Type: xxxxxxxxxxxxx

If this happens, simply re-enter the display type correctly.

4. Disconnect the terminal device from the TRC.

D.4 EFIS INTERFACE CHECKOUT

There are a few, minor differences in the post installation checkout procedures when the Honeywell EFIS
is used as the display device. Perform the Post Installation Checkout in Chapter 3 while noting the
following:

• The EFIS must be turned on and must be set to display TCAS information before beginning the
checkout procedure.

• The TCAS information will be displayed on the Honeywell EFIS.

• There are no TCAS startup screens displayed on the Honeywell EFIS.

• There is no display dimming control of the Honeywell EFIS.

• The TCAS range on the EHSI is controlled by the remotely mounted, TCAS RNG switch. The
TCAS range on the MFD is controlled by the MFD Controller. Range selection for these two
displays is independent so the EHSI and MFD may simultaneously display different ranges.

• The selected TCAS range is displayed in the lower left corner of the MFD and along the right-
center of the EHSI.

• Proximate Traffic and Other Traffic symbols are displayed on the EFIS in cyan (not in white).

• No-Bearing TAs are displayed, in text form, in the lower right corners of the MFD and the EHSI.

• During Installation checkout using the TT391, at each test point the EFIS will only display one
target; a Traffic Advisory (TA) at ¼ nm.

• The TCAS Self-Test should be performed as outlined in Section D.5, Para. IIIA of this appendix.

D.5 OPERATIONAL IMPACT

The following paragraphs describe the operational impact to the TCAS791 when interfaced with the
Honeywell EFIS. "No change" indicates there is no operational impact to the TCAS791 for that topic. This
information is provided to assist you in updating your Flight Manual Supplement. Final installation
approval must be obtained from the FAA. Refer to Chapter 1 for more information.

NOTE
ABOVE, BELOW, and STANDBY is available only if the TRC is running
software version 1.3 or later.

I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

following:
The CD605 DIM/OFF, Range, and TEST controls can be used instead of, or in addition to the
remote switches (see table D-2).

Add the following new paragraphs (under section I. General Information)

E. HONEYWELL EFIS/TCAS I SYSTEM CONTROLS

The TCAS I System control is performed via remotely mounted switches when the TCAS791 is
interfaced with the Honeywell EFIS. The remote switches and their functions are defined in table
D-2.:
Table D-2. Remote Switch Function
CONTROL SWITCH TYPE FUNCTION

ON/OFF Toggle Allows power to be applied to the TCAS I.

RANGE Momentary Selects range or togggles in/out of STANDBY (TCAS OFF). If in
STANDBY, pressing the RANGE button places TCAS into the 10
nmi range and ABOVE (ABV) mode. Pressing the RANGE button
while on the ground and not in STANDBY, toggles through the
two smallest ranges (5 or 10 nmi). Pressing and holding
(approximately 3 seconds) the RANGE button while on the
ground and not in STANDBY, changes the range and then
switches into STANDBY mode. In flight the RANGE button has
no effect other than changing the range (5, 10 or 20 nmi).
TEST Momentary Initiates TCAS I Self-Test or selects ABOVE (ABV), BELOW
(BLW) or NORMAL altitude display mode. If in STANDBY
(TCAS OFF), pressing the TEST button initiates the self-test. If
not in STANDBY mode, pressing the TEST button toggles
through the altitude display modes (i.e., ABOVE, BELOW, or
NORMAL).
AUTO/MAN Toggle AUTO allows the EFIS MFD to be automatically interrupted
when a TA occurs. TCAS information will pop-up on the MFD
and remain displayed until 10 seconds after the traffic is no
longer a threat. The MFD will then revert to the selected
function before the TA occurred.
MAN (manual) prevents the EFIS MFD from being interrupted
by TCAS information. When a TA occurs, the aural message will
still be broadcast, but visual TCAS information will not be
displayed (unless TCAS was already selected on the MFD).

F. HONEYWELL EFIS/TCAS I SYSTEM DISPLAYS

The Honeywell EFIS does not display the TCAS middle-range and inner-range rings as displayed
on the CD605. When the 20 nm range is selected, no 2 nm (inner) range ring is displayed on the
EFIS. When the 5 or 10 nm range is selected, the EFIS displays white dots around the aircraft
symbol at the 12 relative clock positions. These dots represent a 2 nm range from your aircraft to
help interpret traffic locations.
The aircraft symbol on the Honeywell EHSI is displayed at the lower center of the screen – not at
the geometric center. Accordingly, the display area for the TCAS range is offset. The display
ahead of the aircraft (off the nose ±60°) accurately depicts the selected range. However, the display
at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions shows approximately 80% of the selected range. The display
at the 6 o'clock position shows approximately 60% of the selected range.
The aircraft symbol on the Honeywell MFD is displayed at the geometric center of the screen.

F. TCAS I / HONEYWELL VSI/TRA SYSTEM DISPLAYS

The Honeywell VSI/TRA displays TCAS symbology (own aircraft symbol, targets and range rings)
only when there is traffic within the selected display range. Otherwise, a "clean" VSI screen is
displayed.

A middle-range ring or an inner-range ring may be displayed on the Honeywell VSI/TRA when
traffic is within the selected range. The middle-range ring is a white arc displayed ahead of the
own-aircraft symbol. The inner-range ring is made up of 12 white dots surrounding the aircraft
symbol. They are displayed at the 12 relative clock positions to help you interpret traffic locations.
The inner-range ring always represents 2 nm and is displayed when either the 6 or 12 nm range is
selected. The middle-range ring represents 10 nm and is only displayed when the 20 nm range is
selected.

The aircraft symbol on the Honeywell VSI/TRA is displayed at the lower center of the screen – not
at the geometric center.

Altitude display modes ABOVE and BELOW will be displayed at the lower left corner of the
display as ABV and BLW respectively. NORMAL mode is indicated by the absence of either ABV or
BLW.

This section contains instructions for using the TIC T-49C Flightline Tester to do post-installation checkout
of the TCAS791. Complete operating instructions for the TCAS791 are provided in the TCAS791 Pilot’s
Guide supplied with each system. Detailed setup, operation and maintenance information for the T-49C
Flightline Tester is provided in the T-49C Operating and Maintenance Instruction Manual.
NOTE
The T-49C Flightline Tester can be used only if the TRC is running software
version 1.3 or above. The software version is identified on a tag attached to
the back of the TRC.

G.2 POST INSTALLATION CHECKOUT

NOTES
1. This procedure assumes familiarity with the set up and operation of the T-49C
Flightline Tester and RS-232 terminal device.
This procedure will validate the installation and return to service of the TCAS791.

G.2.1 Using The Terminal Device (e.g., Laptop Computer)

Refer to paragraph 3.2.1 for information on using the terminal device. Paragraph 3.2.1 also includes a
description of the available laptop commands.

G.2.2 Checkout Procedure

The T-49C Flightline Tester simulates a ground based secondary surveillance radar (SSR) when the TCAS
INTRUDER selector switch is in the ATCRBS/Mode-S XPDR TEST position. When the T-49C intruder type
switch is set to ATCRBS, the unit responds to ATCRBS Mode C interrogations. A varying delay time,
controlled from the microprocessor, delays the replies returned to the TCAS from as far as 14 nautical
miles and as close as a few hundred feet. The apparent distance from the simulated intruder to the TCAS
system under test decreases as if the intruder was converging on the aircraft under test. The test set
determines the altitude of the aircraft under test by interrogating the transponder using an ATCRBS
interrogation. By adding or subtracting the desired differential altitude, as selected by the front-panel
scenario switch, the initial altitude of the scenario is controlled by the microprocessor. This altitude, like
the distance, is varied so that the simulated intruder converges on the aircraft’s position.

Installation Manual
Do not run the pilot-initiated self-test (step 20) before calibrating the
directional antenna (step 7).
1. Position the aircraft with the nose aligned on any 90 degree heading. Avoid areas within 250 ft of
obstructions (e.g., hangers, large aircraft, control towers, etc.) where there is a potential for multipath
problems. Locate and mark test points at 30 degree intervals (i.e., 000, 030, 060, 090, 120, 150, 180,
210, 240, 270, 300, and 330 degrees) with respect to the TCAS NY156 top directional antenna. Mark
these points at the same distance, approximately 100 ft (or less), from the aircraft.
2. Turn TCAS OFF and then:
a. Make sure the aircraft’s transponder is in the STBY.
NOTE
After power up, it may take a couple of minutes for the altitude encoder to
return a valid altitude to the transponder and TCAS.
b. Make sure all compass/HSI flags are cleared from the aircraft’s instruments.
3. Turn TCAS ON. The CDU will display a start-up screen similar to one shown in figure G-1.
The start-up screen display identifies the system firmware version numbers. After approximately
thirty seconds the CDU will show the STANDBY screen.
NOTE
If the TRC has not been calibrated to the directional antenna (see step 7
below), the CDU may display a “TCAS FAILED” message. If the TRC is
running software version 1.3 or later, the CAL PROB function can also be
executed by holding in the RANGE button while powering up the unit (refer
to paragraph 4.6).

white diamond in TCAS symbology) at 9 NM. Target will be displayed in level flight at own
aircraft altitude (i.e., “00” displayed above the traffic symbol).

NOTES
1. If the CDU reflects a gross error in target bearing, check the NY156 top
directional antenna cables at TRC connectors J6 (difference port) and J8
(sum port). They may be reversed. A further indication of this condition
would be a target that moved in a counter-clockwise direction when the T-
49C is moved in a clockwise direction.
2. Multiple targets or a faulty bearing may result from multipath distortion
(see step 1).
3. During these tests, the TCAS791 may detect and display other active
targets.
4. To obtain a better line of sight, it may be necessary to elevate the
antenna.
c. Move the T-49C to each test point and verify that the TCAS CDU displays the corresponding
bearing displacement.
NOTE
It is necessary to wait a few seconds after moving to let the test target stabilize
in position.
15. Verify operation of the bottom L-band antenna, from any testpoint:
a. At the terminal device, type:
TOP OFF <ENTER>
b. Press the TEST button and verify that as the range decreases, the display will change to a no
bearing amber TA. If the no bearing TA is not displayed, check the bottom L-band antenna
system (i.e., antenna, cable, and connectors).
16. This completes testing with the T-49C, reattach top lid of the T-49C.
17. If installed, TURN ON the radio altimeter.
18. At the terminal device, type:
CLEAR ERROR <ENTER>
19. Restart TCAS by cycling power OFF and then ON.

b. If installed, power up the radio altimeter.
c. Make sure all compass/HSI flags are cleared from the aircraft’s instruments.
2. Set pilots’ barometric altimeter to 29.92.
3. Turn TCAS ON. The CDU will display a start-up screen similar to one shown in figure G-1. The start-
up screen display identifies the system firmware version numbers.
4. If the TRC is running software version 1.3 or later, after approximately thirty seconds, observe the
STANDBY display and then press the TEST button on the bottom of the CDU.
5. The CDU should present a display similar to that shown in figure G-3. The altitude displayed at the
bottom of the CDU during test should be within ±125 ft of the altitude indicated on the altimeter. If
the displayed altitude is not within this range, turn TCAS OFF. The system should be serviced as soon
as possible. If the aircraft altitude encoder is suspect, verify it by using a transponder ramp tester.

Figure G-3. TCAS791 Self Test Screen

6. At completion of the self-test, the TCAS TEST PASSED audio annunciation will be heard.
NOTE
If you receive an aural TCAS TEST PASSED message without the test screen
being displayed on the CDU, the CDU has failed and TCAS shall be turned
off.
7. Reset altimeter to current barometric setting.
NOTE
If you receive an aural TCAS TEST PASSED message but a maintenance code
is present on the bottom of the display, execute the DUMP ERROR command
and review system messages (see para 4.4).
