Situation: An American Standard Channel shape is to be selected from the C shapes provided in
Table 1. The C shape is to resist a dead load of 240 kN and a live load of 320 kN. The length of
the member is 4.60 m, and there will be two lines bolts in the web, as shown in Figure 1. Standard
size holes are for M22 bolts. Use A36 steel and ASD specification.

Requirements:
a) Required strength for the tension member
b) The required gross area from yielding of the gross section
c) Assuming a shear lag factor of 0.85, solve for the required net area from fracture of
the net section
d) The preferred minimum radius of gyration
e) Select the lightest adequate C shape from Table 1. (Neglect block shear)
