This method statement applies the construction of lower portion of sub grade, which is 2.2m below
than the bottom of sub base. The original ground conditions shall be in accordance with the
requirement mentioned in clause 304.3 (C) of ICTAD SCA/5. If the existing ground is marshy or
swampy, the necessary soft ground treatment will be carried out before constructing embankment as
specified in the design drawings. This method statement will not be applicable for cutting areas.
This method statement describes the construction of lower portion of embankment with approved
material either from excavations of the road way, borrow pits or other sources and according to the
lines, levels and grades, dimensions and cross sections shown in the drawings in the sections of DK
3+180~ 3+530, D2K 6+300 ~ D2K 6+355, D2K 6+555 ~ D2K 6+780 , DK 17+450 ~ 17+605, DK
22+000 ~ 22+210, and DK 22+660 ~ 22+810.

In this section in chainages where culverts to be construct, 10m wide spaces will be provided without
embankment construction. Those areas will be treated after culvert construction completes.

4.1 Materials

Soils used as embankment materials will be naturally occurring soils and will not include high plastic
clay, silt, peat or organic soils and any soil that contaminated with deleterious materials.

(Extracted from Table 1708-1: Requirements of Embankment, ICTAD publication No.SCA/5)

Property Test method Type II

Liquid limit BS 1377 Not exceed 55%
Plasticity Index BS 1377 Not exceed 25%
Maximum Dry density AASHTO T180 Not less than 1500
(Modified) kg/m3
4-day soaked CBR at AASHTO T193 Not less than 5%
95% MDD(Modified)

4.2 Sources of supply Embankment Materials

All suitable materials available from the road way and other excavations will be used for embankment
construction as directed by the Engineer. Where additional material is required will be obtained from
approved borrow pits or other approved sources.

Matara- Kataragama Railway Extension Project (Phase 1) Sri Lanka Matara-Beliatta Sector

4.3 Preparation

4.3.1 Clearing and grubbing

In areas where embankment is to be constructed, top soil will be removed to a depth of 150mm. all
surface objects, trees, including stumps and roots, stumps and roots of previously fell trees, over

Hanging branches, except those trees and objects, the Engineer directs to be left undisturbed, will be
grubbed and cleared.

In areas of Embankment construction, stumps, roots, and solid objects will be removed to a minimum
depth of 0.5m below the top level of sub grade or to a minimum distance from slope of the
embankment. The removal of these materials will be to an extent of 1m outside the toe of the
embankments.

Where the embankment fill is more than 3m high, non – perishable solid objects will be discarded
subject to that the protruding length from natural ground level is less than 0.5m.

In cut areas, stumps and roots will be removed to a minimum depth of 0.5m below from the top of sub
grade level.

4.3.2 Setting out

After the site has been cleared, the limits of embankment will be set out as required. The pegs or
stakes showing the limits of the embankment will be fixed at 1m distance outside the actual limits of
the fill.

4.3.3 Removal of top soil and compaction of in-situ soil

Where the height of embankment fill is more than 500mm and less than 3.0m, top soil will be
removed as described in 4.3.1. Top soil will be removed under embankments whose height is greater
than 3.0m and where top soil is required in other locations or on the instruction of the Engineer. If the
in-situ material conforms to Type II embankment material it will be compacted, to a minimum depth
of 0.15m, not less than 93% of the maximum dry density of the material at moisture content within 2%
of the predetermined optimum moisture content as determined by BS 1377, test 15 (modified proctor)
or AASHTO T180. The degree of compaction will be checked by field density measurements.

In the areas where existing embankment need to widen, the existing embankment slope will be
properly benched before starting new embankment fill if the materials comply with the requirements.

3/8
Matara- Kataragama Railway Extension Project (Phase 1) Sri Lanka Matara-Beliatta Sector

The bench width is not less than 2.0m and height is 0.5m.

4.4 Placing and compaction of Embankment material

4.4.1 Placing fill materials

The care will be taken that the fill material is free from oversize particles. If any present will be
removed manually, before spreading and compaction.

All materials which are deposited in place prior to compaction will be evenly spread over the whole of
the designated area for the layer concerned and in such quantity that the thickness of any one

layer, when measured after compaction will comply with the requirements mention herein.

The initial spreading will be carried out using dozer or JCB and prior to compaction a motor grader
will be adopted to make smooth and leveled surface to receive uniform compaction from the roller.

Any new layer less than 75mm in compacted thickness will be bonded to the previous layer by
scarifying the previous layer to a depth not less than 25mm or to such depth the total compacted
thickness of new layer plus the scarified portion of the previous layer will not be less than 100mm.

The maximum particle size in fill material will be not more than 2/3 of the compacted layer thickness,
which will be not more than 225mm.

Isolated larger rock or stones present in fill material will be removed before compaction work. If the
material is too wet it will be allowed to dry in air, if too dry watering will be done prior to compaction
using sprinkles mounted to water bowser.

4.4.2 Compaction

During compaction of rolling will be commenced at the edge and progress towards the centre. When
commencing from the edge rollers will run forward and backward along the edge sufficient times until
the edge strip becomes firm enough to provide necessary lateral support. The roller then move
inwards parallel to the centre line of the road in successive passes overlapping. Rolling will continue
until the specified degree of compaction achieved throughout. When rolling will terminate at edge the
similar procedure during commencing will be applied. During compaction work top surface of fill will
be checked for levels and cross falls and any irregularities will be corrected by scarifying the material
in the affected area and by removing or adding materials and continue with the rolling until the entire
4/8
Matara- Kataragama Railway Extension Project (Phase 1) Sri Lanka Matara-Beliatta Sector

area being rolled has been brought to a state of uniform and desired compaction.

The types of compaction equipment to be used and the amount of rolling to be done will be such as to
ensure that specified densities are obtained without damage to the underlying layers or to the structure.

Each successive layer will be spread only after the previous layer has been tested and found
satisfactory as specified. If any time after compaction the layer will get damaged by drying out or by
rain, it will be scarified, and re compacted to the requirements of the specification.

4.4.3 Degree of compaction of embankment fills

The lower portion of the embankment will be compacted not less than 93% of the maximum dry
density of the material at moisture content within 2% of the optimum moisture content as determined
by BS 1377, Test 15 (Modified proctor) or AASHTO 180.

4.5 Drainage and protection of the embankment

Water will not be allowed to accumulate at any point in the earth works. The water will effectively
drain during the whole of the embankment construction regardless whatever the source is. The
embankment and cutting sections minimum cross fall and longitudinal gradient will be maintained.

4.6 Construction of rubble toe wall (M7.5 mortar)

The mortar rubble toe wall construction will start after side slope trimming works completes.

If soft clay or organic clay presents at the foundation level of the toe wall, it will be replaced with
permeable soil or stone rubble.

Stone for rubble masonry will be sound, durable, and free from segregations, seams, cracks, and
other structural defects impairing its resistance to the weather. Ensure it is free from rounded, worn,
or weathered surfaces. Stones with flat faces as nearly parallel will select, as it is practical.

The size of rubble stones will be 6-inch or thicker stones at least 1 1/2 times wider than they are thick.
The individual stones, except headers, will at least 1 1/2 times longer than they are wide. Vary the
thickness throughout the wall using thicker stones on the bottom.

Stone surface will be cleaned until free of foreign matter, loose rock grains, and rock dust. All stones
will be well bed in freshly made M 7.5 mortar. The masonry will be set to line in courses roughly
leveled up. For the bottom or foundation, use large, selected stones and will lay all courses with
bearing beds parallel to the natural bed of the material.
5/8
Matara- Kataragama Railway Extension Project (Phase 1) Sri Lanka Matara-Beliatta Sector

Always make full mortar joints and carefully settle the stones in place before the mortar sets. Provide
joints and beds no more than one inch thick. If any stone is moved or the joint broken, the stone will
be taken up, thoroughly clean the mortar from the bed and joints, and reset the stone in fresh mortar.
