CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the significance of the study and the scope and delimitation of the

study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the year 2013, the Former President Benigno Aquino III signed the K-12

Program into law. The K-12 Basic Education Program aims to provide every

Filipino students with the high quality education. This K-12 Program offers every

Senior High School the four (4) different tracks which are; Academic Track,

Technical-Vocational Livelihood, Sports Track, and Arts and Design Track. The

Academic track, which is divided into Accountancy, Business, and Management

(ABM), General Academic (GA), Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics (STEM), and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), is for the

students who have set their minds toward college education. It aims to prepare

the students to more advanced university courses.

Being aware of the courses related to our strand help us to choose the

perfect job in the future. In relation to this, being on the right track that is aligned

on a specific career can give the students enough knowledge that they will soon

use in their college life. It helps the students to be ready and give the overview
D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 3
about how college life on that specific course will be. CIIT College of Arts and

Technology (2017) stated that before entering senior high school, the students

must pick the right track that is aligned to their desired career route. Awareness

in choosing the right track that suitable for the students is a must to avoid course

mismatch. It will also save the time, money, and effort of the students as some of

the lessons that they will take will also be on their college lessons too.

As stated by Edward (2010), career choice is a complex decision a

student has to make since it determines the kind of profession that they intend to

pursue. As students try to decide a career, they tend to encounter problems such

as their abilities and their school performance. However, Villar (2009) reasoned

out that most of the students who are in their senior high school, do not have an

accurate information about the occupational opportunities that can help them to

choose an appropriate career for them.

According to Philippine Basic Education (2018) lacking of awareness in

choosing the right track that is aligned to a student’s desired course in college

leads to course mismatch. The K-12 curriculum in the Philippines with its tracks

and strands push the students to choose a career path at a young age that helps

them to be prepared for their college life. This is the reason why students must

make a wise decision regarding career choice as it makes a big impact on their

future. One wrong choice made, will unfortunately have serious consequences

that might ruin their future and their dreams.

D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 4

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study seeks to find answer to the following questions:

1. How many students will pursue courses in college that is related to their

strand?

2. Is there a Significant Association between their Sections to the Alignment

of their Career Choice?

3. Is there a Significant Association between their Gender to the Alignment of

their Career Choice?
4. Will SHS students take college program aligned to their strand?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This research concentrates in studying the problems encountered by the

Senior High School students of Dee Hwa Liong Academy regarding the

Alignment of their current strand in their career choice. This study is limited only

to the Grade 12 ABM students that were recently enrolled in School Year 2019-

2020.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study entitled “Awareness of the Grade 12 Students in

Career Choice Aligned to their Strand” will contribute to the following groups or

individuals:

To the Students- this study will help them to know the different courses or

careers that are aligned to their strand. This will also help them to determine the

career that they can and will pursue in the future.

To the Parents- this research will help them to save their money, time,

and effort in giving their child the financial assistance they need to study.

To the Society- this study will also help to increase the number of

employment that will help our economy grow in the future.

To the Future Researchers- this study will serve as a reference to them.

The aim of this pilot study is to know the awareness of the students to the related

courses of their strand which has an impact on adolescent’s decision for a future

career.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature, both foreign and

local. This also presents the different variables relative to the study.

LITERATURE AND STUDIES

According to Choi et al., (2012), there are mixed findings concerning

whether demographic factors like gender, race/ethnicity and socioeconomic

background are associated with Career Decision Self-Efficacy (CDSE). In

addition, CDSE focuses on the capacities needed to successfully navigate

academic and occupational pathways, such as gathering occupational

information, selecting goals, planning pathways, solving problems, and self-

appraisal of interests and abilities (Betz et al., 1996). Higher levels of CDSE are

associated with lower levels of career indecision, openness to a greater range of

occupations, better career adjustment, and rational career-decision making

patterns. (Uffelman et al., 2004; Brown and Lent, 2016)

As stated by Georgetown report (2018), the importance of having college

education for employment was growing rather than shrinking. The recent

recession was only accelerated the trend. It also reports that it’s crucial when a

person have a clear idea of one's career choice so that s/he can get the most of

one's investment in college education.

D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 7
However, Witko et al., (2006) stated that interest, skills, personal

meanings, challenges, and parents’ support are some of the factors that

influences and helps a student to choose their career. In addition, Kerka (2010),

stated that the career strategist recommends to identify our personal

characteristics and match them with the aligned courses that is suited to their

personality. For instance, a person who is excellent in math and loves to analyze

can pursue math-related courses such as accountancy and engineering.

The implementation of K-12 curriculum in the Philippines, various strands

are now offered in the last two years of basic education. Those various options

will help the students to find themselves later unprepared for the courses they

decide to take in college (Unknown, 2018). However, Damla (2018) stated that 4

out of 10 Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) graduates nationwide

are committed in strand mismatch. Even though the students took the

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand on their senior high

school, some of them are still pursuing courses in college which is not related to

their strand that may cause several problems such as lack of knowledge, wasting

of time, money, etc.

Furthermore, Loffredo (2017), stated that misalignment of one's career

choice makes students' completely miserable, trigger, depressed or can even

cause their physical and mental health to be ill. It can cause everything from

minor problems to major disruptions. She also states that an alignment between
D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 8
one's career and one's core values may produce satisfaction, that result so a

student’s happiness, fulfillment, and contentment.

In addition, misalignment between career and educational aspirations

occurs when the minimum qualification required for a person’s desired

occupation exceeds their educational expectations (Perry et al., 2016). Poor

alignment is associated with volatile aspiration trajectories during schooling

(Berger, 2016), lower achievement at the conclusion of secondary school

(Schmitt-Wilson and Faas, 2016), lower university entry rates (Morgan et al.,

2013), and unstable employment and lower wage attainment in adulthood

(Sabates et al., 2011). Students from disadvantaged backgrounds appear more

prone to aspirational misalignment, despite generally not having “lower” career

aspirations compared to their more advantaged peers (Gore et al., 2015; Perry et

al., 2016). Disadvantaged young people often have less exposure to higher

education and professional occupations, increasing their susceptibility to

aspirational misalignment and perpetuating socioeconomic inequalities (Perry et

al., 2016).

Hence, Berger et al., (2019) stated that misalignment between one's

career and education aspirations might lead to poorer achievement during

adolescence and having unstable employment in adulthood.

SYNTHESIS

In order to navigate academic and occupational pathways, Career

Decision Self-efficacy (CDSE) is needed as it focuses on the capacities of

students. The importance of having college education for employment was

continuously growing. It is an advantage when a student has already a clear idea

of their future career choice so that they can give their full effort and investment

in their college education knowing that it will be worth it when it comes to their

employment. Also, for those students whose not yet decided when it comes to

their future career choice there are some factors such as skills, parents supports,
D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 10
and challenges that can influence and help them to have a better ideas about the

perfect career for them. Matching student’s personal characteristics to their

aligned course is a great strategy to help them identify their future career choice.

To avoid misalignment of one’s career choice, being on a right track on senior

high school is a big factor that can result to student’s satisfaction, happiness,

fulfillment, and contentment. In contrast to this, being on track that is not aligned

to their career choice might lead to minor problems to major disruptions.

Misalignment between one’s career and education aspirations can lead to poorer

achievement during adolescence and having unstable employment in adulthood.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 24
This chapter presented the summary, conclusions, and recommendations

of this study.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

We, the researchers, conclude that majority of grade 12 ABM students in

Dee Hwa Liong academy are going to pursue college with an average of ninety-

two point one percent (92.2%) and a frequency of seventy (71) respondents.

Majority of these are female with an average of sixty-eight point eight percent

(68.8%), the rest are all male. Many of the respondents' age ranges to fifteen to

seventeen (15-17) years old with the frequency of forty (40), and there are also

respondents' age that ranges to eighteen to twenty (18-20) years old with the

frequency of thirty seven (37) respondents. In this case, there are only sixty five

(65) respondents who will choose a course aligned to their strand. Six (6) of the

respondents' chosen course in college are not aligned in their strand. According

to the respondents' chosen courses in college, majority of them will choose that

certain course because it is aligned to their strand. But, there are also students

that their parents ae the one who will choose their course in college. Also, some

of the respondents will choose a career which was influenced by their peers.

Aside from that, there are also students that will not pursue college. Some

reasons are because of scarcity or poverty, get a job to help and sustain family

needs, etc.

CONCLUSION
D E E H WA L I O N G A C A D E M Y 25
As the research has demonstrated the awareness of grade 12 ABM

students in career choice aligned to their strand, primary data were collected

from randomly distributing questionnaires to seventy-seven (77) respondents. As

mentioned earlier in the introduction, the main purpose of this study is to

measure the awareness of grade 12 ABM students in choosing their specific

career that is aligned to their strand and avoid the tendency of course mismatch.

The researchers found out that the majority of the respondents are completely

aware to the alignment of their strand to their desired course in college. In

relation to that, majority of the respondents has already set their mind to the

course that is related to their strand. But, there are some respondents who chose

non-ABM related courses. The respondents will choose their future career path

according to their personal interest and each individual’s capabilities.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, the researchers

proposed the following recommendation for the betterment of this study; (1)

Further participants are suggested, for the researchers to know the awareness of

the students regarding the courses aligned to their strand, (2) Future researchers

are recommended to further improve and develop the study.
