INTRODUCTION

Background Of the Study

A case study involves an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a


particular case or cases, within a real-world context. Case studies are used to help you
see how the complexities of real-life influence decisions. The term case study refers to
both a method of analysis and a specific research design for examining a problem.
Analysing a case study requires you to practice applying your knowledge and your
thinking skills in a real situation.

Based on our assignment, we must do an interview session with the owner of


the business to know all the information about her company. All information includes
the history of her businesses, the productivity, the inflow of income, and Strength,
Weakness, Opportunities, and Threat (SWOT) Analysis. We must do a report based on
all the information given by the owner. The report must follow the requirement needed
in the guideline.

Purpose Of the Study


The purpose of a case study is to describe an individual situation (case), as
example, a person, business, an organisation, or institution, in detail. Based on our
assignment, we must collect all the information requested above, the details of the
problem about the company that we have chosen which is Abril De Aries.
Next, identify the key issues of the case. In this case study, we are required to
identify the major problem of the business, what are the disadvantages and the
weakness of her company. What are the things that affected her company badly?
Besides, case study is the process of analyse the case using relevant theoretical
concepts. For example, in this case study, we are using the SWOT analysis to describe
her business Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threat. We must recognize all
those SWOT in her business to make a good report.
Finally, recommend a course of action for that particular cases. After we define
the problem and weakness of the company, we must come up with the best suggestion
for the problem stated before to improve the business. What are the solutions that can
be implemented to the company in order to improve their business? We will provide
the best solution for her company to be better in future.

COMPANY INFORMATION

Background
Owner of Abril De Aries is Miss Nurul Asyiqin Binti Mohd Samsir. She is a 21 years
old girl who lives in Johor Bahru. She owned a business and it operated at her house at 74,
Jalan Bukit Impian 10, Taman Impian Emas, 81300 Skudai, Johor. She is also a second-year
full-time degree student in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and took International Business
Management. She started her business officially on 18th August 2020.

Organizational Structure
Miss Asyiqin is the owner of the business and since she handled the business at her
house, in other word she does not have an official workplace. During our interview session on
13th April 2021, she mentioned that she handled her business with help from her family. Her
parents and her siblings. So basically, she does not have any formal organizational structure.
But she herself is the owner of the business and handled almost everything from the product to
the financing part.

Products/Services

The products that Abril De Aries offered have five and. First is dyed clothing. Second,
mariposa shirt. Third product is a tote-bag (die-tie & embroidery) and then she also provides a
gift box. All the items that she offered are in pre-order terms. All the products usually take
about 1 to 2 weeks, and it depends. Sometimes it can be faster or slower than the estimated
time. The gift box is the newest addition in her products. Also, the customer can custom design
on the product they want, such as the mariposa shirt and the tote bag. The common design that
customers have been asked for the mariposa shirt is to add the name on top of the “Butterfly”.
While for the tote bag, the customers usually choose their favourite character in Anime or any
cartoons or their favourite person to be the design on top of the tote bag. There are few types
of lining design that can be chosen. Such as, one line art and black and white design for the
tote bag.

Business marketing techniques

There are a lot of marketing techniques in doing businesses to become successful


including promoting via social media, keep promoting the end result of the products and keep
adding new changes into your business products by giving an evaluation to current products
thus reform or renew the products. Abril De Aries keeps promoting their products in social
media such as Instagram (@abrildearies) and even in Tiktok Apps (@abrildearies). Social
media is a good platform for businesses either small businesses or even large businesses
because the founder can increase their customer engagement even worldwide. Any social
media will benefit the business founder even though it will take longer to get customer’s trust.

Besides, Abril De Aries uses the TikTok platform to promote their businesses. Founder
of Abril De Aries says that there are Tiktok hacks to promote at the best time where people
spend much time on Tiktok. Although, there are advantages to promoting their products in
Tiktok Apps as TikTok has a larger customer engagement where more people tend to know the
products. By using Tiktok, she keeps posting videos on the process of making her business
products with creative editing thus it will make people on TikTok more attracted to her
business.

Other than that, Abril De Aries also uses Instagram as their main platform to promote
the products. Whenever followers from Tiktok get attracted to see their videos, they will
automatically search for business Instagram (@abrildearies) thus increasing followers on
Instagram. In Instagram there are proper photos of the product and details, contact links to
order and feedback from regular customers. On Instagram, she also keeps promoting her
business product by stating the product details and price.

Lastly, before people find interest in Abril De Aries, they must see the result of their
products whether it is useful or how it looks when using their products. Abril De Aries has
various products including tie-dye clothes. Founder of Abril De Aries keeps posting on social
media about her customers' feedback and they really like the products as it is beautiful to
whoever wearing the tie-dye clothes. Every business must make sure that their customers are
giving positive feedback after using their products and therefore it is important to post
customer’s feedback on social media to build other people's trust before buying.

Operational strategy
Since Abril De Aries is her small business and just a side income while she was still
studying in a local university, but she still managed to maintain the strategy to keep her business
sustained till now. One of her strategies is she maintain posting on Instagram's feed so that
other people and regular customers will see her business progress. As we know, it is important
to ensure business Instagram’s feed to let people know about our current products or coming
soon products. She could see business engagement at Instagram whereas how many people are
searching or looking for her business even she can see how many people follow her business
Instagram for every day.

Other than that, time is the most important when handling a business. Founder of Abril
De Aries has fixed time in order to complete all the orders that have been made earlier. For all
the products in Abril De Aries it is pre-ordered because all are handmade and takes time to
finish all the orders. There is no other staff to do the products thus the founder will ensure to
make the products on weekends and whenever she has free time on weekdays. Therefore,
customers must be aware of pre-order products which take longer time to be done.

Furthermore, the founder has questioning about how to ensure all the materials for her
products in such a low cost. To make a good profit, the materials must be low-cost but in a
good quality. Abril De Aries is really concerned about their product quality from the type of
tote bag to the colouring suitable for the clothes. She is hard working to find cheaper materials
with the best quality from various suppliers at her house areas.

Lastly, it is important to keep improving efficiency for her products to sustain the
business. As Abril De Aries products are all pre-order which takes 1-2 weeks and the fastest
could be done in about 5 days. She tried to make all the orders quickly and she set limit orders
for every week thus she could finish faster. She also avoids taking too many orders at the same
time even if the customer is okay with that to improve the efficiency from time to time.

STRENGTHS

One of the strengths about Abril De Aries business is they can deliver their products
throughout our country, Malaysia. Due to the pandemic of Covid 19, a lot of sellers nowadays
have been fully utilizing the usage of all couriers in Malaysia such as J&T Express, Shopee
Express, Pos Laju and other couriers as well. Miss Asyiqin, (The founder of Abril De Aries)
would not let the pandemic itself affect her passion in business and her motivation as well, so
she coped with the new approaches of business during this pandemic. She does not limit her
products in a certain area or region only, instead she provides a delivery for her precious
customers throughout the peninsula of Malaysia. It would be a waste for Miss Asyiqin to not
expand her business and utilize the chances since the system of courier nowadays has been
improved a lot and the price is affordable as well.

Other than that, Abril De Aries business is focusing on custom clothes design and tote
bags. Yes indeed, there are a lot of entrepreneurs out there who have provided this kind of
product, but what makes Abril De Aries different from the other is the design of the product
itself. The design is based on customer requests, and surprisingly some of the designs are even
derived from anime (Japanese Cartoon) characters. Not all those small entrepreneurs can
provide this unique and limited design to all of their customers. Most of the sellers out there
have the same pattern and repeated sales repeatedly. However, for Abril De Aries, the design
would not be repeated since its variety depends on the customer request and demand as well.

Not only that, Abril De Aries also has a proper platform for their design execution. The
owner of Abril De Aries, Miss Asyiqin has managed to buy the “Adobe Design” software and
master it for the sake of her customer. Compared to the other small entrepreneurs, they are not
capable of using this kind of software because it is very complex, and it is hard to use at the
same time. But for the brighter side by using this software, the owner itself can manage to
create a unique design and interesting towards her customer and at the same time can attract
new customers for their business as well. That is what Miss Asyiqin has thought and decided
to buy the software even though it is quite expensive.

The last and the most significant strength for Abril De Aries is their products are very
affordable in price and worth it. There are a lot of entrepreneurs that provide the same services
and products as Abril De Aries. However, what makes the difference is their price. For Abril
De Aries, the products that are served are worth it with an additional request designed by their
customers throughout Malaysia.

WEAKNESS

Every business will always have a weakness thus they can improve becoming a better
company in the future. It is the same for Abril De Aries and furthermore it is a small and
medium entrepreneur which will face a lot of difficulties and flaws as well. One of their
weaknesses is the lack of workers. Since this is a small entrepreneur led and handled by the
same person, Miss Asyiqin, she found out it is hard for her to produce consistently and
efficiently since she is the only worker for her businesses. Furthermore, with the execution of
the Movement Control Order (MCO), it really limits Miss Asyiqin to increase the number of
her workers since everyone in Malaysia is being asked to stay safe at home. With a few numbers
of workers, it will lead to inefficient time consuming to produce numbers of her products.

The second weakness is that Miss Asyiqin’s new sewing machine does not have the
software that she uses to design her customer demand for their products. Even Though Miss
Asyiqin has bought the design software, it is still not applicable towards the sewing machine
itself because she needs to buy a specific driver to install the software and thus will enhance
the uniqueness of a certain demand request from the customers. It is very normal for every
customer to have their own design of products instead of having a normal design compared to
the other people, but this weakness has limited Miss Asyiqin’s businesses to gain or perhaps to
collect some of her regular customers from any range of her income. However, from Miss
Asyiqin's point of view, this weakness of problems is not a big issue, and she is certain that one
day she will install that design software into the new sewing machine. But as for now, she will
focus more on gaining some capital needed to invest to gain those drivers for her new sewing
machine.

The last and the most important weakness for her business is her connection problems.
When we are discussing the online approaches for every small entrepreneur, the consistency of
her connection plays a big and important element for their business performance. In Malaysia,
there is plenty of telco that provides the best deal for data connection, however their consistency
of the speed itself is a question. Malaysia does not have a 5G connection speed currently and
for these small entrepreneurs including Miss Asyiqin, they are facing the problem about the
connection itself. As for Miss Asyiqin, the consistency for her connection is needed in order to
use the software (Adobe Design) smoothly, sometimes she is having difficulties in designing

her products towards the customer. This can be seen to have affected her business in a sense of
quality, time management, and even the creativity. Furthermore, Miss Asyiqin is currently
living in Skudai, Johor and does not have a variety choices of WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) thus
cannot have a specific solution to solve this matter unless she is moving out to urban area,
specifically in Kuala Lumpur since they had plenty of telco choices such as Maxis Fibre Home
Internet, Time, Digi Fibre Home Internet, Celcom, Hotlink, Umobile, XOX Telco, Webe, and
others.

OPPORTUNITIES

Nowadays, no matter what demographic era, social media is the best way to market
products. Thus, Abril de Aries take this chances to expand their marketing strategy. The
business owner takes initiative to promote her business in social media such as Instagram and
Tiktok. Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook are the most used platforms around the world whether
it is for fun and business. From kids to old people, they will have at least one account on these
3 platforms. This gives the opportunity for Abril de Aries owner’s to expand their business not
only limit to her range but reaching all ages. The application itself has created a new function
for business to help owners expand their business and it can also bring the business into
international level. Miss Asyiqin gained 12.7 thousands of followers in Tiktok since the
business started and she took this opportunity making so much effort to have a good
engagement with her followers by updating the customer’s order video on certain time to match
the algorithm of Tiktok where everyone can see her video.

Besides a good engagement in social media, moral support from family also is one of
the most important factor for Miss Asyiqin to be successful in her business. Throughout her
business journey, her family always stays beside her and support her in many aspect. A
supportive family that is willing to help and learn how to help her manage the customer’s order.
Not only that. her little brother also started to learn how to sew just to help her finish customers’
orders by a required time since she does not have an enough time. That is the pros or a good
implication of having a supportive family.

As Miss Asyiqin’s business went well, she decided to upgrade her sewing machine to
a better one since she got a lot of orders, and she must finish the orders on time. Miss Asyiqin’s
business involves a few different techniques of sewing and embroidery so she wants a machine
that can ease her job while increasing the volume of production. She bought a new sewing
machine by using her own profit money and with support from her family too. This machine
really helps her business as the production volume increases from time to time and she manages
to do all the orders on time. There are several designs that can be sewn through the machine
and that is a good investment for her business in future.

THREATS

Threats are something that could damage your company or product, according to
business analysis. Anything from other businesses or stock shortages may be included. Threats
may be both internal and external. This means that threats are harmful to your company, but
there is nothing you can do to prevent them. When someone gets into the business world, of
course they need to do some research before they enter the market. As Miss Asyiqin said in the
interview, there are few problems that become a threat to her business. This affects Miss
Asyiqin's business as well as her income sales. Miss Asyiqin decided to make an embroidery
tote bag as her business because it is one of her skills. Miss Asyiqin is aware that when she is
going enter into the embroidery business, there will be many competitors that do the same
things as hers. She was also inspired by other sellers for her product design. This cannot be
avoided as most of the sellers in the market are selling the same thing except different
embroidery design and different.

Miss Asyiqin spent a lot of time on social media as that was one of her platforms for
her media marketing. Miss Asyiqin also faced some problems in social media when at one time,
her social media got no interaction and attention from her followers. She said there are times
when she got Tiktok shadow banned. This situation was described as no interaction and
communication from her followers. When an account suddenly stops receiving views, likes,
and traffic from the For Your Page (FYP). Miss Asyiqjn feels that if she had success previously,
and that success suddenly dries up, it is a result of TikTok's algorithm choosing to surface their
content less often. Imagine having hundreds of thousands of followers but only a few saw her
videos. She stated that she cannot do anything besides finding the right algorithm until her
videos are found by her followers. This affected her business so badly and Miss Asyiqin got
no sales for a few weeks.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

DESCRIBING THE MAJOR BUSINESS PROBLEM/S FACE BY THE


BUSINESS AND IDENTIFY ITS MAIN CAUSE

One of the major problems dealt by the business could be identified as the time and
effort spent on each product. Embroidery is one of the most delicate and difficult things to do,
whereas according to the founder, each handmade embroidery could take up hours and the
biggest order that she ever received was 12 bags that took a whole month to finish. Since the
founder was only doing it as a part time job, it is crucial for the customers to understand that
time span, and the limited amount of orders that she could take. This is to ensure the well-being
of her mental state, health condition and also business wise. She was determined that she would
continue doing this for the purpose of her passion towards embroidery. It was never about
counting the money that she would profit from this business. As she understood her goals, she
stated in each order that a single piece of embroidery could take up to 2 weeks and for those
who needed their piece urgently was kindly redirected to another embroidery business which
was also her friend.

The purpose of doing so is not to reject customers or to make it look like she was the
best in the market, it was more to prevent the unwanted issues to arise such as the dissatisfaction
of customers due to the long wait and the pressuring part on her behalf. The founder also said
that this was a precautionary step that must be taken in order to control her business reputation
as she wants to take care of the quality of the product as her customers paid a lot for it. Customer
satisfaction was on top of her list and rather than driving her business over the edge, it is better
to let her competitors gain customers and, in a way, it was seen as her soft approach to instil
the love of their customers towards embroidery. It was not just a business to her, it is her love
and passion towards embroidery that drove her to opening a business with zero funds, till this
day where she has numerous followers and a four-thousand-ringgit worth of assets.

Besides that, even though embroidery does not take up much capital, the underlying
medical reason could be one of the biggest setbacks she could experience. A lot of people do
not realize how reckoning and dangerous it could be as hours of sitting in the same position
could affect a person's mental and physical state. Just imagine, if a piece requires a thorough 6
hours of workmanship, times that by 12. That will give you a total of 72 hours in a static

position which usually involves hunching. Statistically, individuals who experienced the same
thing as her or even a desk job, would end up suffering from a back pain, neck pain and if the
condition worsen, she could suffer from neck impeachment where simply put, the backbone or
vertebra are pushed together resulting a compression of your nerve from herniated disk material
or arthritic bone spurs. This might seem too medical, but this is what most of our population
suffers from today.

It is important to learn how to avoid or reciprocate the effects rather than worsening.
Even so, prevention is better than cure is what we stand by. The founder was clear on the risks
that she would be dealing with thus that is why it is vital for her customers to know that 2 weeks
is the minimum timing of completing one piece. She needs to take care of herself first and only
then she can continue and work hard for the business to strive. Embroidery is not just something
that can be done overnight, it needs focus, and precision to make sure that the end product is
up to the customers standard. Which is also the reason why the price of a piece of embroidery
is not cheap and every one that undersees the market realizes that. As embroidery needed to be
appreciated unlike other clothes that can be done in under 5 minutes. All in all, the problems
encountered by her originate from the same basis.

Finally, is, balancing life while working, studying and being present at home whole
heartedly. After interviewing and really getting the founder's point of view, we understood that
the current situation had also affected her life. Juggling life between studies, family and even
business, she had taken a step back and understood that the ability to spend adequate and
reasonable time for each and every important thing in her life is vital, which is why good
segmentation is crucial. The art of prioritizing the most to the least important responsibility of
hers had taught her how to react or compartmentalize. With the current online distance learning
method that most universities have adapted, her studies need to be continued at home where
her lectures are carried out throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For education itself had
taken half of her day.

She had stated that, even being at home, her mind is always somewhere else. It is either
about assignments, due dates or even about the questions of whether she will be able to
complete customer’s orders a bit earlier than promised. This has affected her as her
responsibilities at home are expected to be done too and it is not only about washing the dishes
or cleaning the house, but she also has responsibilities as a daughter by being present whether
physically or mentally. It was one of the things that she was worried about, even though her
parents understood her condition, she felt like it's not nice if she's living in her house but
continuously being consumed by other responsibilities. This is more of a personal problem, but
we felt the need to highlight this problem as it affects the business performance greatly.

IDENTIFYING ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO MAJOR PROBLEM


EXPERIENCED BY THE BUSINESS

As the major problems are identified, it is easier to tackle the problem and find an
efficient solution that could help the business to strive better. First and foremost, the essence
of time and energy. The founder understood the problem that she was dealing with, thus she
took the initiative to raise RM3000 for her business alone to invest in a sewing machine that
could do many things such as a variety of designs, safe to say it is not an average sewing
machine. The journey after owning the machine changed drastically as her business became
more efficient as she was able to complete more orders and could venture into other products
such as clothes with custom made requests. It was one of the best-selling products that helped
her to gain more customers thanks to the power of 'trend'. People became more aware of the
specialty of embroidery pieces and when she channelled that idea into making a tie-dye shirt
with a name and a symbol on it, it became a trendsetter. For customers, they are always looking
for something new that looks nice and unique. Thus, with the product, they get to design
however they want and put their name on it. This creates a special bond between the piece and
the customer as there are not many to none out there because it is single handily made for them.

Besides that, the presence of the machine had helped the founder to finish custom made
orders within minutes. What used to be hours of time and energy spent just became the easiest
thing for her. The best part is, the technology on the machine has made it possible for her to
control it directly from any linked device that is connected thus, the time spent on it has
decreased dramatically and what she treasures the most is, two of her problems were solved
only with one solution. She could finally multitask while ensuring the quality of her pieces to
be the best of the best. Moreover, there is no better way to kill two birds with one stone. The
founder realized that it was time to expand the business, slowly but surely. She took the
initiative to find someone that could help her with the upcoming orders as it was time to take
it up a notch thus, her brother became the next embroiderer in line. Luckily, her brother also
had a passion towards embroidery even though she had to train him for hours, but the results
were promising. As more manpower became available, the business was surely moving in a
positive manner. Customer's satisfaction was achieved and reduced working hours were also
down by more than 50% per person.

In order to solve the art of balancing life, her policy in the business was improved for
the better. With every interaction that she received from the customers; she would explain
regarding the time period thus there will be no confusion at the end of the day. It is considered
as a light solution; however, the impact has shown that good communication is crucial and vital
for a business to survive on any given platform. In a way, it helps with configuring and carefully
setting the timetable throughout the month. This helps the business to strive better and
efficiently because when the surrounding is influenced by a positive energy, every single
outcome would achieve the highest and the best that it can get. This could also be known as the
placebo effect and even without the consumption of any external elements, the power of
positivity is highly contagious.

OUTLINING EACH ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION AND THEN EVALUATING


THEM IN TERMS OF ITS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES.

With the help from the machine, the working hours were able to cut down to more than
half of the original period. However, there are limitations as the machine operates on a different
technology or system that needs to be upgraded if the owner does decide to pursue an even
more complicated design. The process of buying the technology would not be a problem, the
disadvantage is more towards how expensive the technology is. The price of the system itself
costs the same as the machine, which totals to an amount of RM3000 alone. Some businesses
would consider it as waste because a whole Rm3000 could get themselves a new set of
machines in contrast to buying a technology that would even seem beneficial by some people.
However, with the purchase of the new technology there comes advantages too despite the
expensive price. The new technology could do way more complicated designs that could take
up days for the handmade pieces to be finished. The expected revenue that may be collected is
highly promising too as people pay for the quality, the better the quality the more expensive a
piece is. With this addition, precision and the quality will be even so much better than before,
the probability of these pieces to experience human error could be decreased to 0. A fully
functional machine only does what the user had set, such as if the design is set to be
complicated, the machine would execute the commands from the linked device without any
hesitations.

Lastly is with the help of her brother, it is undeniable that the burden on her shoulder
became a little bit lighter. However, on some occasion she might need to handle some pieces
herself as customers have their own preference as to the designs that they want. Each hand has
their own uniqueness and their own signature, and this is what differentiate the value of an
embroiderer's work. To some people, the finishing touch plays a very important part where
they tend to observe whether the pieces are neat and fully done while some just do not care as
they look at the product as a whole and not individually. Quality wise may not be the same, as
she is more experienced, and her work might be more precise and perfect while the brother
may need more training in order to improve his skills. On the brighter side, since they are
related it would not be a problem since there's no need for funds to be spent to send him on a
training course. The training would require only the amount of time she is willing to spend with
him for a certain period of time.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, based on our case study which needs us to investigate a small – medium
size of business, we are now finally can describe on how Miss Asyiqin operates and run her
business, we can identify the issues or problem that the owner might face in order to finish the
customer’s order. Furthermore, we can also recognize what are the threats, strengths, weakness
and also opportunities (SWOT) to her small business and have the potential to become a
successful business one fine day. There are several issues that we have found and identify in
her business which are the time consumed, balancing factor between studying and business,
and her own health condition. All of those are the major issue that has been highlighted by the
owner. As for the recommendation and solution for the issue, Miss Asyiqin could buy another
