MODULE 6

Lesson 6:
New Challenges to Human Adaptation and Social Change

What I Need to Know?

Human beings are commonly adaptive to changes to his environment

over time. In history, humans learn to modify their behavior to suit themselves
in new conditions where they are. Thus, it presumed that these changes are
important for survival and adaptation.

This module will discuss more about new trends of challenges to human
adaptation, social change including pandemic crisis and its impact to people
and its environment.
”It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most
intelligent, nut the ones most responsive to change”.
Charles Darwin

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
MELC: Examine human responses to emerging challenges in contemporary
societies.
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. evaluates factor causing social, political, and cultural change;
2. advocate how human societies should adapt to such social, political, and
cultural changes.

What’s In?

In the previous chapter we learned about social movements, (types, levels, and
stages).
In this chapter, we will connect that knowledge of social movements to human
adaptation due to many factors involved as well as the challenges brought in which
social change in its environment rapidly took place.

What’s New?
LET’S HAVE AN ACTIVITY!

What is It?

Adaptation- refers to a change or the process by which an organism or species

becomes better adaptive to its environment. It enhances change and survival of
individuals. All living organisms including humans contain adaptation and adaptive
skills that enable them to survive.

Structural where Behavioral are Psychological when it

adaptations are composed of inherited permits the organism to
physical features of an behavioral chains perform special
organism such as and/or the ability to functions like making
shape, body covering, lern. venom, slime secretion,
armament, and internal and general functions
organization. such as growth and
development,
temperture regulation,
and ionic balance.

Global Warming and Climate Change

Climate change serves as a

new huge challenge for 21st
century same with Covid-19
Pandemic, ironically we
observed how climate shaped
human development. As what
we see in the illustration on
the other side research
findings would be a great help
for present society and we
must do something and act
urgent to address global
warming and climate change
to ensure our survival

Climate Change Effects in Asia
Earth is made up of continents and regions, Asia as the largest among others in
terms of geographical location; it has been significantly affected by the effect of global
climate change, and due to its current atmospheric conditions that seriously impact
its economy in most of its countries.
It was believed that Covid-19 also started in Asia and the frequent occurrence
among Central, East, and South-East Asian regions as evidently due to climate-
induced diseases with unstable temperatures, and rainfall variability.
In addition, another serious problem amongst’ countries of Asia is the losses of
coastal ecosystem due to frequent and severe flooding; sea-water intrusion because of
the rising of sea water level.
Lastly, the increase risk of flora and fauna extinction is likely the result of the
incompatible effect of climate change and its habitat dispersion.

Table 1
Examples of Adaptation to Possible Negative Impacts of Global Warming
(Warmer, Drier, Climate) in the Tropics

Expand irrigation systems

Switch to new cultivars (e.g. maize to more drought tolerant sorghum)
Diversity activities (new crops, livestock, alternative employment)
Provide public relief and improved climate information
Increase food imports
Increase use of fertilizer and pesticides
Return to traditional water and soil conserving technologies (e.g. raised field,
agroforestry)
Migration and urbanization

What’s More?

Transnational Migration and Overseas Filipino Workers

The mobility of people from one place to another also had a big impact in global
society aside from the changes in environment brought by climate change.
Migration is the process of geographical movement or change of residence of
pepeople from one community to another in purpose or due to circumstances such as
employment.

International

Types of
Mobility

Internal Circulation

International Migration – is the transfer or move out to a different country.

Internal Migration – a change or movement of residency with in the other parts of the
country.
Circulation migration- is the temporary movement of a person.
Furthermore, people do not just move or transfer from one place to another
without a reason, thus others purpose is to find a greater opportunities for a better
life.

Transnational Migration
Nina Glick Schiller (1992) a former Porfessor of Anthropology at the University
of Manchester defines transnational migrants “those persons havong migrated from

one nation-state to another, live their lives across borders, participating
simultaneously in social relations that embed them in more than one nation-state”.
It is said that transnational migrants created connections for social and cultural
exchanges between various societies. The impact in economy is prevalent through
business, remittancess and investments.

Transnational Migration and the Overseas Filipino Workers

Overseas Filipino Workers is a person of Filipino origin who works and lives outside
of the Philippines. This term also applies to Filipinos who are abroad indefinately as
citizens or as permanent residences of a different country and those Filipino citizens
who are abroad for a limited, definite period as workers or as students.

Effects on Family of Migrants

As migration rapidly increasses globally, our country is leading in this field.
Unfortunately most Filipino OFW’s job offers a short-term basis with this, temporary
workers do not have the security of tenure and this resulted to stress for their families.
Since technology allows for a more frequent and mobile exchange between families
separated by distance the changes occur in the status of life of their families which is
separated by distance, it will not a hindrance for their lives to succeed.
