• Susanthika Jayasinghe.

She won the Olympic silver medal for the 200 meter event in the 2000 Summer
Olympics in Sydney. She is known as the Asian Black Mare.

• Sri Lankan Cricket Team:

The Sri Lankan Cricket team won the Wills World Cup in the year 1996.
The captain at that time was Arjuna Ranathunga.

Veddhas of Sri Lanka:

• They are the native community of Sri Lanka also know as the inhabitants of
our country. It is also believed that they are the descendants of the children of
King Vijaya, an Indian King who came to Sri Lanka around 534 AD, and
married Kuveni.

• The mostly live in Maihyagana area, Dambana.


Heyiyagala, Pullbeddha, Rathugala and also in the districts of Ampara and
Badulla.

• They used to live in small huts in the jungles and in caves or in tree houses.

• Ancient veddhas wore animal skins and leaves.

• Their food was yams, fruits, honey which was a part of their main food. They
also ate fish and burnt meat.

• They are famous for collecting bees honey.

• They had their own language and their own traditions and a very peculiar
dance.

• They used bows and arrows and a special small axe to kill animals

• They used various types of roots, leaves and even tree barks found in the
jungle as their medicines.

• “Tissahamy was a well known tribal leader who fought for the rights of the
Veddha community for nearly five decades and his son “Uruwarige
Vannilaththo”, took over the leadership after his death.

Tissahamy

• The changes observed in Veddha life:

• Today they make pots and pans and are engaged in chenna cultivation.

• They wear clothes

• Their living conditions are much better as they live in houses with thatched roofs.

• Their children are now attending school and some have achieved higher education.

• Their language has been changed to Sinhala and Tamil gradually.

• Veddha’s Gods, their beliefs and their cultural traditions.

• Veddha’s do believe in Buddhism, and they even take part in the cultural events in Mahiyangana

Uva province.
• They also worship God Kalu Banda, Vaniya Banda, Moon Banda, God Katharagama and God
Saman.
• To obtain blessings from their relations they perform “Kiri Kohraha Dance”.
