1 INTRODUCTION

In this project, a bridge design is asked to replace the existing bridge at Sharq Marina. In the

new bridge design, a specific requirement of passing the large vessels is given. The design

must comply all the requirements. When the large vessel reached near the bridge deck, the

bridge must be open and after crossing the bridge, it must be closed.

Movable bridges are designed to flow the water traffic easily. Earlier, when fixed bridges are

developed, they started hindering the vessel traffic. Ships needs to change their paths and it

may delay the ship timings. Large vessels used for transportation and carrying goods, etc.,

and changing its path lead to cost increment. To solve this issue, movable bridges are

designed which are helpful and provide the flexibility to close and open the bridge and for

passing the large vessel. The traffic density is increasing these days and the ship designs are

supporting the large vessels to accommodate or carry the heavy load. Therefore, movable

bridges are the need of this time. Various movable bridges are designed but most of them are

not useful for the heavy loads and not suitable for the heavy cyclic loads. Therefore, it is

urged to change the existing old designs into the most suitable designs especially in those

locations where the large vessels are pass across it.

Movable bridges help to develop active water highways. When the movable bridges are

closed, the marine traffic in that area will be stopped and when it is opened, the traffic start

flowing easily. Movable bridge designs have veracious challenges such as seismic loading,

wind force, etc. There are different types of movable bridge designs are present in real life,

for example, tower bridge London, Scale Lane bridge, England, etc. These bridges have a

unique type of mechanism such as mechanical design-based mechanism, pneumatics system-

based mechanism etc., with which it moves to provide required clearance to the ships.
Movable bridge design includes the concepts of load bearing capabilities, structural load,

aerodynamical aspects. There are numerous studies are already done based on movable

bridge structure analysis in the high wind conditions and its aerodynamical effect on the

bridge structure, etc. There are different types of design are used so far for designing a

movable bridge.
