MASCOAT INDUSTRIAL-DTI INSULATING COATING

RECOMMENDED THICKNESS CHARTS
PP5 Personnel Protection Thickness Recommendation
The following chart shows the minimum coating thickness recommended to achieve
personnel protection per ASTM Standards C1055 & C1057 using our coatings. An
independent party in a laboratory setting determined this recommendation.
Coated surface temperatures may be uncomfortable to the touch, but will effectively
limit the risk of a first-degree burn within 5 seconds of skin contact. Please note ambient
temperature does not affect the thickness needed unless it is above 140˚F (60˚C).
Substrate Temperature Recommended Thickness
Less than 275˚F (135˚C) 40 mils (1.00 mm)
300˚F (149˚C) 60 mils (1.50 mm)
325°F (163˚C) 80 mils (2.00 mm)
350°F (177˚C) 120 mils (3.00 mm)
375°F (190˚C) 180 mils (4.50 mm)
This chart represents estimated thickness of the coating at personnel protection
standards based upon ASTM C1055 and C1057. Actual coating thickness is dependent
on client specifications, environment, and other mitigating factors. For more specific
recommendations, please consult with Mascoat for a detailed analysis of your project.

Actual coating thickness is dependent on client specifications, environment, and other
mitigating factors. For more specific recommendations, please consult with Mascoat
personnel for a detailed analysis of your project.

PP5 Personnel Protection

Mascoat has pioneered the field of personnel protection using insulating coatings. As the
first coatings company to present a comprehensive study on the subject to NACE,
Mascoat has revolutionized how companies can protect their employees from burns.
PP5 is a term to describe 2 ASTM standards, C1055 and C1057.
• C1055 – Standard Guide for Heated System Surface Conditions That Produce
Contact Burn Injuries
• C1057 – Standard Practice for Determination of Skin Contact Temperature from
Heated Surfaces Using a Mathematical Model and Thermesthesiometer.
These standards dictate acceptable surface temperatures so that burns do not occur
(C1055) and how to use a thermesthesiometer to determine the burn hazard potential for
a heated surface (C1057). A thermesthesiometer is an instrument that mimics how human
skin absorbs heat using a thermocouple embedded in a silicone pad.
Using the thermesthesiometer, Mascoat has performed numerous tests in a lab setting,
where the variables included substrate temperature, ambient temperature, and coating
thickness. The results of the test show the acceptable coating thickness necessary for
Mascoat Industrial-DTI to provide adequate protection from 1st degree burns for at least 5
seconds of contact.
The graph below shows the results of those tests, and what coating thickness is required
to keep personnel safe from burns at various temperatures. The maximum allowed skin
temperature is 137°F (58.3˚C) per ASTM C1057 recommendations.

Measuring for PP5 Temperatures

Infrared (IR) Thermometers are the most common tool used to measure temperature in a
plant environment, but the reality is that it is measuring for heat loss, i.e. the amount of
heat passing through a substrate, not temperature. Though their ease of use can quickly
provide results, they don’t tell the whole story when it comes to Mascoat Industrial-DTI.
Through the research mentioned on the previous page, Mascoat discovered a linear
correlation between what an IR Thermometer reads and what the PP5, or “feels like”,
temperature really is when taking readings on Mascoat Industrial-DTI.
If the IR Thermometer reading taken on the coated surface (minimum thickness of
40 mils or 1.0 mm) is below 270˚F (132˚C), then it is safe to touch for 5 seconds or
less. If the reading is above that, more coating may be needed to achieve proper
personnel protection per ASTM C1057.
To properly calibrate an IR Thermometer to find out if a surface coated with Mascoat
Industrial-DTI is safe to touch, it must have its emissivity value set properly for different
colors. If yours can’t change emissivity values, you won’t get an accurate reading.

Below, you will find an excerpt from the study that details some of the temperatures as
shown by an IR Thermometer and their correlating temperature measured by a
thermesthesiometer, the tool used to determine PP5 temperatures. A white paper study
detailing the methodology behind the results given here is available upon request.
