Why are there so few dining options at Point Mugu?
Question: As a civilian at Point Mugu, I would
like to be able to eat at the chow hall for lunch. The
only choices I have are Subway, the taco truck or
The Point, which isn’t even open when I go to lunch
at 10 a.m. (I start work at 5 a.m.). I am allowed only
30 minutes for lunch, so off base is not an option.

Why can’t I eat in the galley?
Answer: This expresses a common concern
— one of which I am very aware and that I have
made a top priority to resolve.
The galley is subsidized by appropriated funds
for the purpose of providing subsistence to Sailors
living in the barracks on Rations in Kind. The sur-
charge fees do not cover the entire cost of the meal,
and the real costs are much higher.

Squadron’s search efforts
in Japan recognized
as part of Military
Appreciation Month
In recognizing May as Military Appre-
ciation Month, the Ventura County Board
of Supervisors thanked the Black Eagles
of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squad-
ron 113 (VAW-113) for their “selfless ser-
vice” in Operation Tomodachi, a relief
effort to help the survivors of the 9.0-mag-
nitude earthquake and resulting tsunami
off the coast of Japan earlier this year.
“On March 13,” two days after the
quake, “the USS Ronald Reagan was first
on the scene in Japan to carry out Opera-
tion Tomodachi that would provide much-
needed humanitarian assistance and di-
saster relief,” Supervisor Kathy Long,
whose district includes part of Naval Base
Ventura County, read at the May 10 Board
of Supervisors meeting.

In the May 5 edition, we started a brief
list of resources that greatly enhance our
lives as military spouses. In this edition,
we continue with more of those resources
to keep in our arsenal.
• Child Development Center (CDC):
The CDC provides a development pro-
gram for children ages 6 weeks through 5
years old. They are accredited by the Na-
tional Association for the Education of
Young Children. Demand is high for
CDCs. Contact your local base CDC for
application and availability as well as
fees.
• Child Development Homes (CDH):
CDHs, like CDCs, are licensed and ac-
credited. For those who might prefer a
more home-like atmosphere for their child,
the Navy offers a CDH program where
child care is provided from their homes.
CDHs provide the same level of high-qual-
ity care found in CDCs but are often able
to offer more flexibility in services. CDHs

are required to meet Navy childcare guide-
lines, and many are also licensed by the
state as well. CDH providers offer devel-
opmental programs, and they receive
training and home visits on a monthly

basis. CDH subsidy is available for all
eligible families.
• Child and Youth Programs (CYP):
CYP provides child care, youth recre-
ational programs and services for eligible
children and youth ages 4 weeks to 18
years of age. Programs include transition
services, oversight of CDCs and CDHs,
school age care, school liaison officers and
much more. Check with your local CYP
office for programs and services at your
base.
• FFSC counseling: We have mentioned
FFSC, but I want to specifically talk about
their counseling services. FFSC counselors
provide counseling and crisis intervention
for Sailors and spouses to include indi-
vidual, marriage and family counseling,
child counseling, deployment support,
education and training such as parenting
support and stress or anger management,
and IA/GSA support. All counselors are
fully qualified and credentialed to serve
you.
• TRICARE: A column in itself, TRI-
CARE is the health care program serving
the military community. They offer com-
prehensive, affordable health coverage
with several health plan options, a robust
pharmacy benefit, dental options and
more. Once you are enrolled in DEERS
(Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting
System – your Sailor enrolls you in the
system once married) you can visit your
local TRICARE Office at the base hospi-
tal or clinic or log on to www.tricare.
mil.
• United Concordia: UC is the provider
for the military’s dental program. Too
many military families are not aware of
this benefit. This is a voluntary program,
and you must enroll for coverage. Fees are
incredibly low for the benefit! Log on to
www.tricaredentalprogram.com for plan
information and to enroll. You’ll be glad
you did!
• Navy Legal Services Office: Their mis-
sion is “to support the U.S. Navy and their
families with the very best in legal ser-
vices.” This office provides free legal sup-
port, and let me encourage you to utilize
this benefit. Services include tax informa-
tion, claims, pre-deployment documents
(power of attorney, wills, advance direc-
tives, etc), and legal services, including
contract reviews (rentals, etc.).
Again, this list is far from exhaustive,
but it is a start to the resources that are
available to help us “navigate” the waters
of military life.
As a new spouse it might seem over-
whelming, but with resources and support,
you’ll find this life, while unique and chal-
lenging, is incredibly rewarding.

Moving over the summer? Here are things to remember
Summertime may mean vacation time
for some families, but for many military
families it also means moving time.
Many families with school-age children
do their best to plan their PCS move dur-
ing the summer to alleviate some of the
stress of transitioning during the school
year. However, a summer relocation does
not necessarily equate to a stress-free
move.
When considering children and teens,
moves are difficult no matter what time
of year they are made. Before the school
year ends, there are a few things to con-
sider in making the move a bit easier.
Most important is honest and open
communication. No one, including a child,
wants to be surprised with a move. Un-
derstandably, exact dates may not be avail-
able. However, most children will appreci-
ate knowing that a move is in the near
future and that they may not be returning
to their current school when the school
year begins in the fall.
Encourage children to share contact
information with their friends as the
school year winds down. There are so
many opportunities for children to stay in

contact with one another. Depending on
their age, letters, phone calls, texts or social
media can provide communication that
will make your child feel a sense of com-
fort communicating with someone famil-
iar even when they are in a new place.
It is also important for parents to let the
school know that a student will not be
returning. If a parent does not notify the
school, the school will not know until the
child does not show up during the first
week of school or when the new school
requests transcripts — often once the
school year has begun. Schools plan class-
es and student placement based on the
number of children they expect to return.
It is best for all students if the school
knows your child will not be returning.
Parents: Do not pack birth certificates,
immunization records or final report cards.
The new school will require these docu-
ments to enroll. You may want to enroll
your students before your household
goods arrive. Also, if a student is receiving
special education services, parents should
have copies of the Individualized Educa-
tion Plan (IEP) on hand.
Research schools and neighborhoods
before deciding on housing. Every Navy
installation has a school liaison officer
(SLO). Call your local SLO to get the con-
tact information for the SLO at your new
installation. The SLO can give you infor-
mation about school choice in the area,
registration and youth services.
As comfortable as parents would like to
make their children feel about a move,
sometimes hearing or reading about it
from another child’s perspective helps. The
Department of Defense has created a web-
site, Military Youth on the Move. The site
is an easy-to-use resource that reaches out

to youth with creative ways to cope with
issues that arise in the face of a move, such
as transitioning to a new school, saying
goodbye to friends and getting involved
in a new community.
Each page contains age-specific advice
on a given topic, answers to common ques-
tions and helpful links for additional in-
formation and guidance. The site is filled
with bright colors, photographs and
quotes from other youth to make the site
friendly and engaging.
The website is divided into three target
audiences: elementary school, middle
school and high school. Users simply click
on their age group to get started. Once
inside the site, users search different top-
ics that pertain to both military youth in
particular and youth in general. High
school teens can also find topics tailored
to their needs such as preparing for life
after high school, opening up a bank ac-
count, and writing a resume. To access it,

 How to keep all channels open during a deployment

Lately I’ve been asked by married cou-
ples how to enhance their communication
with one another whilst on deployment.
Here’s what typically happens while one
is deployed: The service member calls
home whenever they can (maybe daily,
maybe once a week) and the spouse (usu-
ally a wife) will ask, “How are things?
How’s work?” of which the member re-
plies, “Fine. Good. Same old.” Then the
member (usually a husband) will ask the
same of the spouse, of which the reply is
a lengthy and well-intentioned disserta-
tion of every detail of life back home.
These conversations usually leave both
people frustrated and feeling like they’re
missing the mark in terms of communica-
tion.
So here’s what I propose couples do.
Ask each other these two simple questions
during times of separation: “What was
the high point of your day (or days de-
pending on time between calls home)?”

and “What was the low point of your
day?” For the husband, these high/low
questions call them to deeper reflection

endured in Nazi concentration camps.
The presentation, held as part of Na-
tional Days of Remembrance, drew more
than 80 people at Point Mugu, while Chi-
na Lake employees watched by VTC.
Pierce, who spoke at Naval Base Ven-
tura County, Port Hueneme, last year, was
accompanied by his son, Mark, and wife,
Libby. As they did last year, the son read
from a book about his father’s life, while

on their day and even engage them on an
emotional level. They’ll have to consider
what the best and worst of a day is, and
in doing so, share more deeply than the
usual, “My day was fine, we built some
stuff and got dirty — it’s the same every
day.”
When spouses at home answer these
questions, they have the opportunity to
keep the communication focused on them,
the very reason their deployed spouse
called in the first place, and not on all the

Charles Pierce, who lives in Camarillo’s
Leisure Village, survived six years of im-
prisonment, torture and forced labor in
six Nazi concentration camps, including
Auschwitz and Dachau. When he was
liberated by U.S. Army soldiers in 1945,
he weighed only 60 pounds.
His book is highly detailed, and Pierce
was asked how he was able to remember
so many dates and places.
“My body was shot,” he said, “but my Holocaust survivor Charles Pierce and

Anyone who has visited the commissary
or Navy Exchange at Naval Base Ventura

The Lighthouse
County, Port Hueneme, lately has experi-
enced the ongoing construction to rede-
sign the parking lot, realign Addor Lane
to alleviate traffic and make the area saf-
er for drivers and pedestrians.
With construction expected to continue
through late August, here are some tips
to make the next few weeks easier as work
continues:
• NEX General Manager Anna Esguer-
ra recommends shopping early in the
morning — the NEX opens at 8 a.m. — or
after 6 p.m. when the parking lot isn’t as
crowded.
• People who aren’t doing business at or
near the NEX or commissary should use
other parking lots. For example, if you
have business at the Fleet & Family Sup-
port Center, the bowling alley or the Post
Office, use the parking lot in front of the
FFSC, Building 1169.
• Handicapped parking is still available
in front of the NEX and on the west end
next to the Garden Shop.
• Do not park along 27th Street as that
is now the designated truck route for ship-
ments to the commissary and NEX.

In a tough economy with gas prices
climbing weekly, the personnel of Naval
Base Ventura County (NBVC) continue
to take care of their own!
For the fourth year in a row, the Active
Duty Fund Drive raised more money for
the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society
than in the previous year. This year’s total
of $74,185 is a slight increase over last
year, but considering the economy, Direc-
tor Nadine Gamble believes it was a good
year.
“Times are tough for our young Sailors
and Marines,” she said. “With gas and
food prices going up weekly, I’m pleased
that we had an increase of 1 percent. I
know this means that command represen-
tatives worked harder this year to make
sure 100 percent of their personnel were
given the opportunity to contribute.”

retired personnel. In 2010, more than 800
clients were assisted with over $494,000
in interest-free loans and grants at
NBVC.
Here is a breakdown of the type of as-
sistance given:
• 500 personnel were helped with basic
living expenses: food, child care, rent and
utilities.
• 50 personnel were helped with trans-
portation to go to the bedside or funeral
of an immediate family member: parent,
grandparent, sibling, spouse or child.
• 40 personnel came to NMCRS to get
help with essential vehicle repairs.
• 282 personnel received help with oth-
er vehicle expenses such as car insurance
or registration.
• Six families were assisted with dental
care.
• Four service members received help
with funerals.
• 125 service members received budget
counseling.
The Quick Assist Program accounts for
65 percent of the loans provided. Up to
$300 can be loaned for eligible personnel.

Other programs available through
NMCRS are the one-hour Budget for
Baby Workshop and the Thrift Shop, lo-
cated on 15th Avenue at NBVC Port Hue-
neme.
NMCRS is a volunteer-centered service
organization. Volunteers provide the ma-
jority of the services provided. All training
is provided by NMCRS, and reimburse-
ment is available for child care and mile-
age. To join this team, call 982-4409.
Schedule of events
The NMCRS office will close at noon
on Friday, May 27, and will remain closed
until 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, in obser-
vance of Memorial Day.

vance of Memorial Day. Open Monday
and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Low-

Hueneme High School are currently finish-
ing up the program, along with another
Channel Islands student, Andrew Geer,
17.
Pablo, Manuel and Bryan, together with
Arturo Santiago, 18, talked earlier this
month about being able to attend the
NCTC school and whether they think it
made a difference in their education.
“It was a great opportunity to learn a
lot of skills compared to what I’ve been
learning in high school,” Bryan said. “I
think it gave me a better chance of getting
the internship.”
Arturo plans to enlist in the Air Force
after he graduates.
“I enjoyed the experience of being
around military people,” he said.
It is still undecided whether he will need
to repeat A school after boot camp; his
case is being reviewed.
NCTC Chief Construction Mechanic
Jeff Bright said coursework credit is some-
thing that needs to be examined as the
program continues. Currently, high school
students receive only credits toward high
school graduation, even though they’re on
base from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. five days a
week and do independent study for the rest
of their classes outside of that schedule.
The automotive teacher at Channel Is-
lands High School agrees that needs to be
changed.
“Their schedule is pretty intense,” said
Jonathan Throckmorton. “These kids are
working hard.”
He appreciates the Navy giving his stu-
dents this opportunity.
“They’re learning a good work ethic,”
he said. “It’s beneficial in so many ways.”
So do the A school graduates have advice
for the next incoming class?
“Be prepared to wake up early,” Pablo
said.
“Be dedicated and committed to the
program,” Manuel said. “Do what they

Bryan compares the program to a com-
munity college curriculum.
“You’ll have access to a program that’s
like what you’d get at a vocational school
or a community college and you don’t have
to pay for it,” he said. “You start having
good work experience, too. It looks good
on a resume.”
Arturo’s advice was simple:
“Stay dedicated,” he said. “And have
fun.”

its customers pay for their children’s
college education through its A-OK
Student Reward Program.
Four times per school year, four
students will be the recipients of a
$5,000, $3,000 $2,000 or $1,000 U.S.
savings bond, denominations at ma-
turity. The next drawing will be held
at the end of May.
Any eligible full-time student who
has a B-grade point average equiva-
lent or better, as determined by their
school system, may enter the drawing.
Eligible students include dependent
children of active duty military mem-
bers, reservists and military retirees
enrolled in first through 12th grade.

Wilson recently visited Naval Base Ven-
tura County to coordinate the packing and
shipping of all equipment used by the
Navy and Coast Guard Wounded War-
riors during their training camps in Febru-
ary and December at NBVC.
Heldreth missed the first camp — he
was deployed overseas at the time — and
participated only in one day of the second
camp because he had the flu.
“Aaron has some big shoes to fill,” Wil-
son said. “But his physical prowess, his
attitude, his unwillingness to settle for
anything but excellence – this quiet kid is
going to pass everyone up.”
To be named Ultimate Champion, Hel-
dreth must accumulate the most points
combined in the five events. He also has
the chance to medal in each one.
Last year, a Navy athlete was named
Ultimate Champion.
“We’ll do our darndest to repeat that,”
Wilson said.

the best body position, the best angle. I
had to relearn some things.”
Heldreth lives in Oxnard with Crystal
Brewer, whom he met just before the 2008
accident. She visited him in the hospital,
and when he was released, the two trav-
eled to Costa Rica. They’ve been togeth-
er ever since.

Missing her Navy dad, girl draws a winner
First-grade teacher Sarah Puglisi
could tell that something was amiss
with tiny Athena Cimafranca.
The normally bubbly 6-year-old
just wasn’t into drawing something
about strawberries.
“I remember that Athena was es-
pecially gloomy on the day of this
assignment because her dad, who
serves in the U.S. Navy, had just left
for eight weeks of training,” Puglisi
recalled. “She was missing him al-
ready, so I suggested that she draw
something cheerful to help lift her
spirits.”
The result was a smiling straw-
berry that would go on to win first
place in the 2011 California Straw-
berry Festival Youth Art Design
Contest, beating out 733 other entries
from children in grades K-6 in Ox-
nard, Hueneme and Ocean View
school districts.
On Thursday, April 28, Hueneme
School District officials gathered at

Athena received a $100 gift cer-
tificate, and Puglisi received one for
$50.
Athena’s mom, Herchelle, was on
hand for the festivities. Dad Lowell,
a firefighter, was still in Navy training
at Great Lakes, Ill., learning to be a
gas turbine mechanic, but he was
overjoyed by the news that Herchelle
had given him over the phone earli-
er.
“He’s in tears,” Herchelle said. “He
kept saying, ‘That’s me! She defi-
nitely got it from me!’”
While Athena and her dad do
spend time together on art projects,
some of the credit has to go to Pug-
lisi, a teacher for 30 years who has
put her master’s degree in art to
good use in her first-grade class-
room. Intricate art pieces — some-
thing you’d expect in a third- or
fourth-grade classroom, not first
— hang on the walls and across dry-
ing stations throughout the class-
room.
“Improved art skills are reflected
in reading and math,” Puglisi said.
“I want to see growth in all areas. I
also believe that art makes a student
more aware and more culturally
savvy.”
She praised district officials for
allowing her the “space and sup-
port” to carry on with an art cur-
riculum during these times when so
much emphasis is placed on stan-
dardized test scores.
Athena’s design will adorn T-shirts
being sold in the souvenir tent at the
festival.

people to know the history and to know
that “we can learn to live in peace.”
The second speaker, Simon, experienced
World War II from several different per-
spectives. He was imprisoned in Germany’s
first concentration camp, Dachau, from
1938 to 1939. He escaped and fled to the
United States via Cuba. Then he served
in the U.S. Army Air Corps beginning in
1942, flying B-24 bombers over Italy. And
after the war, he became a Nazi hunter.
“These tell the story of my life,” he said,
pointing to displays of his World War II
memorabilia.
He said his life proves one thing: “You
can do anything in this country of
ours.”
A Ventura resident since 1948, Simon
urges the public to stay informed and to
stay aware of the world around them.
“You need to listen to the news,” he
said.
And there had been some big news two
days before his presentation — the an-
nouncement of the death of Osama bin
Laden.
Simon did not waste the moment.
“I want to take this opportunity to
thank the Navy SEALS,” he said.
Eldredge is Getaways Manager of the Year

(MWR) as part of the Recreational Lodg-
ing Group. The Navy Getaways program
is separate from Navy Gateway Inns &
Suites, which is reserved for business trav-
el. Navy Getaways includes 47 recreation-
al lodging destinations offering RV spac-
es, cottages, cabins, hotel-like guest rooms,
yurts, tent sites and bunkhouses.
Navywide, the recreational facilities are
undergoing some new standardizations,
and Eldredge hopes to become a major
part of that.
“Some of the other facilities, especially
those in remote areas, still make reserva-
tions on paper,” she said. “Our organiza-
tion needs a reservation system that will
make us more efficient.”
There are times when both the motel
and RV park are full, but at other times,
especially during the winter, they can run
as low as 40 percent occupancy. Eldredge
hopes to change that over the next few
years, and not just with a more efficient
reservation system. Plans call for the Beach
Motel to be renovated in 2012 or 2013 and
for the RV park to get new wiring, new
hookups, a workout facility and possibly
a beachfront restaurant.
Already, the rooms have been furnished
with new linens – a $7,000 upgrade – and
the doors have been hooked up to a new
electronic locking system.
The last two winters have been espe-
cially rough on the RV Park. In February
of 2010, campers staying on the beach-
front sites had to move back because of
high seas, and this year the entire RV Park
and the Beach Motel were evacuated for
a few hours because of the tsunami threat
after the earthquake in Japan.
“Out here, with all the elements, you
have to have a lot of patience,” Eldredge
said. “Once you cross the lagoon, it’s like
being on your own little island out here.

We can’t process credit cards, and we can’t
make reservations.”
But most of the time, she added, it’s a

Job stress used to be a way of life for
Eldredge, who entered the hospitality field
through the restaurant business.
“I started in restaurants when I was 14,”
she said.
As a teenager in Colorado, she bused
and waited tables, then worked as a pastry
chef and line cook.
Then came the Culinary Institute of
America in Denver and two straight years
of serving as a backup chef for the Tel-
luride Food and Wine Festival.
After that, she became a chef herself,
working at restaurants in Denver; Wash-
ington, D.C.; and Nashville.
The big change came seven years ago,
when Eldredge’s mother needed a hip re-
placement. Eldredge dropped everything
and moved to California to help her. She
saw an ad in the Ventura County Star and
faxed her resume to MWR. She was hired
in food services and worked at The Point
and Nap’s for four years before moving

over to the Beach Motel and RV Park.
She spent the first six months organizing
paperwork, reviewing the budget, planning
renovations and hiring new staff. After
three years, several of those she hired still
work for her.
“She brings new ideas to the table,” said
Recreational Assistant Mary Martinez.
“She treats her staff well, and she’s just a
good person to be around.”
Eldredge, a self-described “beach girl,”
says her ultimate goal is to open a bed-
and-breakfast somewhere near a beach.
Even though she’s served an estimated 1
million meals, she still enjoys cooking,
especially soups, her own chili verde rec-
ipe and seafood “with a little flair to it, a
little spice.”
But she has to cook it near a beach.
“The beach has helped me learn to take
care of myself,” she said. “Spiritually,
mentally, this place helps me so that I can
be a leader to my staff. Here, I can absorb
things and think about things and not just
react to things. You come down here and
you take it all in. You learn to relax.”

Five-hundred brave souls and twice as
many spectators showed up for the Mud
Run on Saturday, May 7, with some com-
petitors trying to win and others trying
for — well, something else.
Serious racers tried taping their shoes
around their feet so they wouldn’t come
off — with mixed success.
The less serious couldn’t decide wheth-
er to take off their tutus before jumping
in the mud, and one decided to keep his
duck suit on the entire race.
Yes, duck suit.
“You don’t look like a chicken,” one
spectator yelled to Christian Nightingale,
44, whose bird costume had gone from a
bright yellow to a sickly greenish brown-
ish gray.
“That’s because I’m a duck,” he yelled
back.

The race is open to both military and
the general public. Competitors first run
two miles, then begin the obstacle course
that starts with a chest-high wade and
ends with a deep-water swim that washes
everyone off.
Coming in first this year was Stephen
Otradovec, 20, who is attending the Na-
vy’s Construction Mechanic A School at
Port Hueneme. He finished in 37 minutes,
58 seconds.
“When I hit the water the first time,
that was definitely the hardest,” he
said.
The last-place finishers came in almost
one hour later.
Alison Kusay repeated her first-place
finish among women with a time of 38
minutes, 26 seconds, fifth place overall.
“It was a tough, challenging course,”
she said. “It felt longer this year.”
Several said they planned to return next
year.
“The rope was the hardest,” said Carlos
Cordero, who works at NAVAIR. “Oth-
er than that, it was a piece of cake.”
Then he laughed.
“Yeah,” he said. “Bring it on!”

SANGIN, Afghanistan — Thirty-four
Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction
Battalion (NMCB) 3 returned to the safe-
ty of Camp Leatherneck last month after
safely completing two combat outposts
(COPs) and improving a critical road in
support of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary
Force.
Since NMCB3’s arrival in Afghanistan
in November, the battalion has built more
than five combat outposts and has im-
proved three roads.
Most of these Seabees were also on De-
tachment Maiwand, where they had
gained valuable contingency construction

“Knowing what to do the second time
around made it a lot easier,” said Equip-
ment Operator 3rd Class (SCW) Cody
Diehl, who was among those who returned
to Camp Leatherneck April 6. “I knew
the sweat we put into this mission was
providing much needed security in that
area.”
Historically, the area where the detach-
ment constructed the COPs and road —
along Afghanistan’s Route 611 — has been
a hotbed of insurgent activity and impro-
vised explosive device (IED) attacks.
The road improvements and base con-
struction projects enabled the Marines to
gain control of the area, said Lt. (j.g.) Elise
Chapdelaine, NMCB 3’s future operations
officer. This gave the Marines the facilities
and capability to stabilize that portion of
the Helmand River Valley. Because of the
Seabees’ hard work and dedication, insur-
gent capability has decreased in the re-
gion.
The first COP construction consisted
of building perimeter walls, a helicopter
landing zone, guard towers and a detain-
ee facility.

— Seabees from Naval Mobile Construc-
tion Battalion (NMCB) 3, Detachment
Meerkat, completed a vital three-mile sec-
tion of road outside of the protective walls
of Camp Dwyer last month.
The Seabees of Det. Meerkat deployed
from Camp Leatherneck in February to
Camp Dwyer in order to repair its road
and entry control point that was heavily
damaged during the seasonal rains this

Calderon, the leading petty officer for
the 31st SRG’s Contingency Construction
Crew Training Division, described his
journey from the 31st SRG to CNO SOY
selection boards.
“I went through six boards, two in Port
Hueneme, three in Virginia and one in
D.C. After being selected as the Naval
Expeditionary Combat Command SOY,
I started realizing that I belonged.
“At times it was intimidating. Coming
from a small community, I really had to
study the rest of the Fleet’s mission and
guiding principles. But I soon realized that
we’re all the same and put our strongest
emphasis and time in the development of
our troops and the well being of our com-
mands,” he said.
Sustained superior performance, leader-
ship, self-improvement, command and
community involvement and military ap-
pearance are the keys to selection. SOY
candidates who excel in all these areas
while assigned to a demanding and chal-
lenging command are given special con-
sideration, according to the CNO SOY
selection guidelines.
Calderon recently completed his Master
Training Mentor Qualification and
achieved a bachelor of arts degree in busi-
ness management from the University of
La Verne, while at the same time continu-
ing his Seabee duties and mentoring junior
Sailors.
“I remember taking college courses in
year. They finished the work April 15.
The road repair was a vital improvement
to conditions that made day-to-day trav-
el easier for units who will use the road.
Because all of the construction was out-
side the safety of Camp Dwyer, a Marine
unit was on scene to provide security while
the Seabees made the repairs.
For some of the Seabees, it was a unique
experience.
“This is the first time I have been a de-
tachment officer in charge,” said Chief

the field on my phone, long hours, papers,
evaluations and teaching courses, and
through that I had to muster up the en-
ergy and continue to see my goal. Where
there is a will there is a way, go get it,”
Calderon offered as encouragement to
other Sailors pursuing a goal.
Calderon’s top enlisted leader at the 31st
SRG, Command Master Chief John Mul-
holland, said, “I was humbled and hon-
ored to have had the privilege to attend
the Navy’s Sailor of the Year presentation
and ceremony. CE1 Calderon and wife
Jamiah were as humble and proud. It’s
totally a privilege to work with such high-
caliber professionals.”
Calderon attributes much of his success

ployment, and it has been an exciting

asked for a better command. The 31st has
been supportive in all tasking. I had many
good chief petty officers come and go and

the Contingency Construction Training
Division, where I continued to learn the
capabilities of our force.
“The most important thing I learned
from this command is that the relationship
of our leaders is crucial to our success,
and that we must set the example for oth-

“Coming straight from A-school to de-
ployment is kind of trial by fire,” said
Equipment Operator Constructionman
Chase Kerbrat. “It has been beneficial
though. I have already qualified on 10 dif-
ferent pieces of equipment, and I’m almost
done getting my Seabee Combat Warfare
Qualification!”
The road project took 45 days to com-
plete and greatly improved the tactical and
strategic capabilities of the Marines op-
erating out of Camp Dwyer.

Iraq and the Philippines.
Besides the 31st SRG, he has been as-
signed to Construction Battalion Unit
(CBU) 406, Naval Mobile Construction
Battalion (NMCB) 4 and the Naval Con-
struction Training Center (NCTC).
Calderon’s next assignment will take
him to NMCB 40, where he will shape and
mold future Seabee leaders.
“This is my opportunity now to recip-
rocate the opportunities that once were
afforded to me and ensure that I continue
to uphold the highest standards of per-
sonal conduct, and educate myself and
others in the future of our Seabees and
our Navy,” he said.
“I’m just proud and honored to repre-
sent the Seabees, and I am here because
of the great people who have contributed
and molded me into the leader I am today.
They should be proud too,” Calderon
said.
