1.1 Purposes
Routine maintenance is a preventive and periodic measure. It is to locate and remove
the faults and hidden troubles in time by checking and maintaining the equipment and the
equipment room periodically when the equipment are working properly. Maintaining the
equipment and the networks can make the system work properly, reliably and securely.
The purposes of routine maintenance:
l To locate the alarms sent by the equipment or faults on the equipment in time, and
to take appropriate measures to handle and recover the faults, thus maintaining the
healthy level of the equipment and reducing the equipment faults.
l To locate the abnormalities of the link status or the connection status during service
operation, and to take appropriate measures to handle and recover the system faults,
thus ensuring normal service operation.
l To grasp the operation status of the equipment and the networks in real time, to
know the operation trend of the equipment and the networks, and to improve the
sudden-event handling efficiency of the maintenance personnel.
l To make the equipment always remain in good condition, and to ensure the safe,
stable and reliable operation of the system through regular maintenance.
l By performing regular check, backup, test and cleaning, to locate the hidden troubles,
including natural aging, function invalidation and performance deterioration during the
equipment operation, and to handle these troubles to prevent an accident.

Operational Precautions
Observe the following operational precautions.
l The system administrators should keep the usernames and passwords of the
equipment properly. Set the validity periods for the passwords and change the
passwords periodically. Manage the passwords in accordance with the rights strictly.
Divide the maintenance rights of the maintenance personnel and the work stations,
and make sure that the equipment are operated securely.
l Make records for all the important or risky operations (such as board changeover,
equipment resetting, and board resetting). Choose an appropriate time and an
appropriate solution. Before the operations, the qualified maintenance personnel
must take the related backup, emergency, and protection measures.
l The modifications to the configurations on the equipment should be controlled strictly.
Back up the data before doing any change to them. After the modifications, make sure
that the equipment are working properly on site. Make records for the modifications.
l When plugging in or out equipment hardware, wear antistatic wrist straps. Do not put
the faulty components in the cabinet or install faulty components in the rack. Keep
the faulty components properly and have them repaired in time.
Maintenance Precautions
Observe the following maintenance precautions.

l Before taking the posts, the maintenance personnel should be well trained, grasp the
knowledge related to the equipment and the networks, have serious working attitude
and professional maintenance skills. They need to improve the maintenance skills
through continuous learning.. During maintenance operations, the maintenance
personnel must follow the instructions described in the related manuals of the
product.
l The maintenance personnel should take the related suggestions in this manual to do
routine checks and tests and to make records.
l When the maintenance personnel have any question during maintenance, they should
record detailed original information and then contact the ZTE customer service center
or the local ZTE office.
l The maintenance personnel must not install, run or copy any other software not related
to maintenance operations on the maintenance terminals. Otherwise, there may be
an unexpected result.
Other Notes
Observe the following precautions.
l Check spare components regularly to ensure that they are sufficient in quantity and are
in good condition, and make sure that the components are not affected by dampness
or mould. Keep them away from the faulty components removed during maintenance.
Mark the faulty components to distinguish them. Supplement the spare components
in time when they are used up.
l Keep ready the regularly used tools and meters, including screwdrivers (flathead
and crosshead), signaling tester, network cable pliers, multi-meter, AC power for
maintenance, telephone line, and network cables. Test and calibrate the instruments
and meters periodically to ensure their accuracy.
l Keep the software and documents that might be used during maintenance in a handy
place.
l If any emergency, the maintenance personnel must be calm and need to perform
troubleshooting in accordance with the related flows of the ZXR10 5960 product, and
contact the customer service center or the local ZTE office immediately.

Steps
1. Check the operation statuses of the air-conditions in the equipment room and make
records. If there is any fault, repair or replace the faulty ones immediately.
2. Observe the temperature displayed on the thermometer in the equipment room.
3. Observe the humidity displayed on the hygrometer in the equipment room.
4. Observe the appearances and inside of the equipment, and observe the floor and
desks in the equipment room.
Reference Standards
1. The air-conditions in the equipment room are working properly.
2. The temperature and humidity in the equipment room meet the requirements.
The temperature and humidity requirements of ZXR10 5960 are listed in Table 3-1.

If the temperatures do not meet the requirements, check
whether the air-conditions in the equipment room are
working properly.

If the humidity is too low, consider to install humidifiers.
If the humidity is too high, consider to install dehumidifier.
3. The dustproof status of the equipment room is in good condition. If all things in are
clean and there is no dust, the dustproof status is in good condition. Otherwise, the
dustproof status is not in good condition.
Steps
1. Check the power supply equipment in the equipment room and observe the displayed
DC working voltage, and make a record.
2. Check the power supply equipment in the equipment room and observe the displayed
AC working voltage, and make a record.
Reference Standards
l The standard DC working voltage: -48 V, allowed variation range: -57 V - -40 V.
l AC working voltage: 220 V ± 22 V, 50 Hz ± 2.5 Hz.

Steps
1. Check whether there are the antistatic ring handles in the cabinets.
2. Check whether there are the serial port cables in the cabinets.
Reference Standards
There should be one serial port cable and one antistatic ring handle at least in a cabinet.
Note:
The ZXR10 5960 is provided together with a serial port cable with a DB9 serial port (to
connect to the serial port of a PC) at one end and a Mini USB port (to connect to the
CONSOLE port of the ZXR10 5960) at the other end.
Steps
1. Check the software version and the board in-position statuses.
2. Check alarm information.
3. Check the operational logs.
4. Check the exception files.
Reference Standards
1. Run the show version command to check the software version and the board in-position
statuses.
In normal situations, the software version and the equipment operating duration are
the same as those recorded by the office personnel. The installed boards are in Online
status.
If the information is not the same or there is any exception, it is necessary to find out the
cause immediately and need troubleshooting in accordance with the related guidance.

In normal situations, the configured fan modules should be in the "online" and
"normally" statuses.

If there is an exception for a configured fan module, for example, the status is "offline",
it is necessary to handle the fault immediately.

In normal situations, the configured power supply modules should be in the "online"
and "work normally" statuses.
If there is an exception for a configured power supply module, for example, the status
is "offline", it is necessary to handle the fault immediately.

3. Check whether the indicator statuses are normal in front of the equipment.
In normal situations, the indicators should be in the following statuses.
In normal situations, the CPU usage of a board for 5 seconds should be less than 50%,
and the memory usage (the last column) of a board should be less than 85%.
If the CPU usage or the memory usage is too high for a long time, it is necessary to find
out the cause immediately and need troubleshooting in accordance with the related
guidance.

5. Run the show interface brief command to check the interface statuses.
In normal situations, the administration status, the physical status and the protocol
status of an interface in use should be Up.
If there is an exception, it is necessary to check the configurations and the physical
connections immediately.

6. Run the show interface command to check interface traffic.
In normal situations, traffic on all ports should not be more than 80%, and the traffic
amount is not changed too much compared with that in the last check.
If the interface traffic is more than 80% or it is changed a lot, it is necessary to find
out the cause immediately and need troubleshooting in accordance with the related

2. Check the IS-IS neighbor status.
3. Check the BGP neighbor status.
4. Check routing information.

1. Run the show ip ospf neighbor command to check the OSPF neighbor status.
In normal situations, all OSPF neighbors should be in the "FULL" status, and DRothers
are in the "2-way" status. Otherwise, it is necessary to find out the cause.
For example:

4. Run the show ip forwarding route command to check the routing tables and run the
show ip protocol routing summary command to check the route entities.
In normal situations, compared with the result in the last check, the number of the
route entities should not be changed too much. Otherwise, it is necessary to find
out the cause immediately and need troubleshooting in accordance with the related
guidance.

Step
Open the cabinet and check whether there is power supply module redundancy.
Reference Standard
In normal situations, there should be redundancy for the equipment power supply modules,
and the redundancy modules should be enabled.
If there is no redundancy, we recommend that you rectify and reform.
Steps
1. Check the configuration file.
2. Check version boot information.
3. Check the rest capacity of the hard disk.

1. Run the show running-config command to check the configuration file.
In normal situations, the configuration should be consistent with that the users require.
If there is new configuration, it is necessary to run the write command to save the
configuration.
2. Run the show nvram command to check the position where the device boots from next
time.
In normal situations, the position should be local.

In normal situations, it is necessary to delete some useless version files and exception
files if the rest capacity is not enough.

Check the equipment system time.
Reference Standard
Run the show clock command to check the equipment system time.
In normal situations, the system time should be the same as the standard time (the
difference should be less than 5 minutes).

If the time is not the same, it is necessary to execute the clock set command to modify the
time, or set the equipment to obtain the time through an NTP server.

1. Check the usernames and the passwords.
2. Check the enable passwords.
Reference Standards
1. Run the show running-config adm-mgr command to check the usernames and the
passwords.
In normal situations, the user passwords are displayed in the encrypted format.
Consider the following suggestions while setting the password.
l Do not use simple words such as zte, zxr10 and who as usernames.
l Set a user password with at least 6 bits. Set the password containing at least two
of the following types: number, lowercase, uppercase and special character.
If the user passwords are not displayed with in the encrypted format, it is necessary
to encrypt them.

In normal situations, it is unnecessary to enable the related function of the FTP server
on ZXR10 5960. The function should be in the disabled status.
If the function is enabled when the FTP server function is not needed, it is
recommended to modify the configuration at the earliest possible.

2. Run the show ip ospf command to check the configuration related to OSPF.
In normal situations, the displayed router-ids should be the same as the configured
router-ids.

Note:
If a router-id is modified but the OSPF process is not restarted, while the previous
router-id is used by another equipment as its router-id, a fault will occur due to an
OSPF router-id collision. Prevent such faults.

Back up the configuration file.

product upgrading guide.

Steps
1. Check cable mounting.
2. Check the labels.
3. Check the rack appearance.
4. Clean the dust screens and the fan modules.
5. Check heat dissipation.
Reference Standards
1. In normal situations, power cables and signal cables should be mounted separately.
The cables should be mounted tidily and in order.
2. Generally, it is recommended to use knife-shaped labels (easy to view information and
keep for a long time). It is necessary to check whether the labels are pasted firmly and
whether the descriptions on the labels are correct.
If a label does not meet the requirements, change the label.
3. In normal situations, the rack appearance should be in good condition and not be
moldy. A blank filter panel should be installed on a spare slot.
4. The dust screens and the fans should be clean so that aeration and heat dissipation
of the cabinet door and the fan frame will not be affected.
If there is too much dust, please choose an appropriate time to do cleaning.
5. Generally, there is not much dust at the air inlets of the cabinet, and equipment heat
dissipation is not be affected.
If there is too much dust, clean the dust in an appropriate time.

Generally, it is recommended to change the user passwords once every 3-6 months.

2. In global configuration mode, run the enable secret level command to modify the enable
passwords at different right levels.
Generally, it is recommended to use enable passwords that are different from the user
passwords.

1. Check the Ethernet interface configuration.
2. Check the IP address configuration.
3. Check the interface clock configuration.
Reference Standards
1. Run the show interface command to check the working mode of an interface.
In normal situations, the rate and the duplex mode of an Ethernet interface should be
the same as those on an interface of the peer equipment. Otherwise, there might be
a hidden trouble.
If the rates and the duplex modes are not the same, modify the configuration at the
earliest possible.
2. Run the show ip interface command to check IP address configuration.
Generally, for an address on a point-to-point interface interconnected between network
equipment, it is recommended to use a 30-bit mask.

Check the backup configuration on the equipment.
Reference Standard
Run the show running-config command to check whether there is backup configuration.

In normal situations, the system configuration should meet user requirements, and there
is no useless configuration. If there is useless configuration, it is recommended to delete
the configuration cautiously.

Steps
1. Check fire protection.
2. Check measures against theft.
3. Check equipment grounding.
4. Check the power supply redundancy.
5. Check the board redundancy.
Reference Standards
1. Check the cabinet, the rack and the cable tray.
In normal situations, there should not be any hidden fire alarm at any place in the
equipment room. The fire protection facilities in the equipment room should be in good
condition and can be used.
2. Check the doors, the windows and the security nets of the equipment room.
In normal situations, all the doors, the windows and the security nets of the equipment
room should be in good condition.
3. Use a multimeter to measure the earthing resistance.
In normal situation, the earthing resistance should be less than 1 Ohm.
4. Check the power supply system redundancy in the equipment room.
Generally, there should be a UPS in the equipment room. For a core equipment room,
there should be storage batteries.
5. Check the storeroom.
Generally, for the important components on the equipment, such as MPU and PIU,
there should be spare ones.

If the spare components are not enough, contact local ZTE technical support to apply

Reference Standard
Check the cleanness of the dust screens, the fans, the boards, the optical interfaces, and
the fiber pigtail connectors.
Generally, the dust screens, the fans, the boards, the optical interfaces, and the tail fiber
connectors should be cleaned periodically.
If there is too much dust, clean the dust by using special tools in an appropriate time.
