What This Module is About

This module was designed to help the learners to use the

concepts of patterns and sequences to develop their skills in critical
thinking and algebraic reasoning.
In this module, you will learn how to formulate the rule in finding
the next term in sequence.
The patterns are very helpful in finding solutions to the
problems. We will use the four basic operations:
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in a sequence of
numbers.

i
What I Need to Know

After going through this module, you are expected to formulate

the rule in finding the next term in a sequence (MSA- III-6 Week-6)

How to Learn from this Module

For you to achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the
following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.

• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and

exercises diligently.

• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

What I Need This part contains learning objectives
to Know that are set for you to learn as you go
along the module.

What I Know This is an assessment as to your

level of knowledge to the subject
matter at hand, meant specifically to
gauge prior related knowledge.
What’s In This part connects previous lessons
with that of what you are going to
learn.

What’s New An introduction of the new lesson

through various activities, before it
will be presented to you.

What is It These are discussions of the

activities as a way to deepen your
discovery and understanding of the
concept.

intended for you to practice further in
order to master the competencies.

What I Have Activities designed to process what

Learned you have learned from the lesson

What I Can These are tasks designed to

Do showcase your skills and knowledge
gained, and applied into real-life
concerns and situations.
Post This assessment evaluates your level
Assessment of mastery in achieving the learning
objectives.

More These are additional activities

Activities designed to increase the level of your
skills and knowledge.

iii
What I Know

A. Put a check mark (/) on the blank if the numbers form a

sequence. If not, put a cross mark (X).
_____1. 7, 9, 11, 13
_____2. 24, 30, 35, 48
_____3. 46, 53, 0, 67
_____4. 44, 55, 66, 77
_____5. 19, 21, 23, 25

B. Find the next two terms in the following sequences.

6. 12, 15, 18, 21, ____, ____
7. 6, 12, 18, 24, ____, _____

Lesson Formulate the Rule in

1 Finding the Next Term in
a Sequence

What’s In

Look at the figures. They are made of cubes.

Figure A Figure B Figure C

Questions:
1. How many cubes are found in figure A?
2. How many cubes are found in figure B?
3. How many cubes are found in figure C?
4. Can you see a pattern? Describe this pattern?

What’s New

Read and answer the problem.

Seven days before his mother’s birthday, Clark planned to give
his gift. On the first day, he sent one gift. On the second day, he sent
three gifts. On the third day, he sent five gifts and so on. How many
gifts did Clark send his mother on the seventh day?

How can you solve the problem?

2
Consider the given problem, it can be presented by table form.
Day 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th
Number
1 3 5 ? ? ? ?
of Gifts
Upon observing the number of gifts
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13

+2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2
As the sequence continues

Therefore, his mother will receive 13 gifts on the seventh day.

What is It

There are problems in Mathematics that can be solved by

observing sequences and patterns. A sequence is an enumeration of
numbers or objects that are in particular order. It appears accordingly
to a specific rule. These numbers are called terms. Patterns are
repetitive sequences and can be found in nature, shapes, events, sets
of numbers and almost everywhere you care to look

What’s More

Answer the following. First, give the rule then find the next term
in a sequence. NOTE: Clue is given.

1. 5, 10, 11, 22, ____, ____, ____

Rule: Multiply by 2 and add 1

2. 3, 14, 25, 36, ____, ____, ____

Rule: Adding by ____________

3
3. 4, 12, 36, 108, _____, _____, ____
Rule: Multiply by_______________

4.100, 85, 70, 55, ____, _____, _____

Rule: Subtract by______________

4. 7, 14, 15, 30, 31, ____, ____, _____

Rule: Multiply by 2 and add _______

What I Have Learned

Fill in the blanks with the correct answer.

1. __________ is a list of numbers or objects in a defined or logical
order.
2. __________ are repetitive sequences and can be found in
nature, shapes, events and sets of numbers.
3. What is the rule of this number pattern 8, 24, 72, 216?
4. What is the rule of this number pattern 2, 7, 22, 67?
5. What are the next two terms in the following sequence? 3, 14,
25, 36, ____
