Grade 5
Mod7Q3W7: Measurement

Lesson 1
At the end of the module, you are expected to:
 measure time using a 12-hour and 24-hour clock

Introduction:

Measurements play an important role in our lives. Time provides us with

a measure of change by fixing the durations of events and specifying which events
happen before which other events. In order to do that, some method of time
measurement is needed. The science or art of the accurate measurement of time is
known as chronometry or timekeeping. There are two ways of telling the time:
The 12-hour clock and the 24-hour clock.

What’s In

A unit of time is any particular time interval, used as a standard way

of measuring or expressing duration. Time is measured with instruments such as a
clock. This instrument can be anything that exhibits two basic components: (1) a
regular, constant, or repetitive action to mark off equal time, and (2) a means of
keeping track of time and of displaying the result. In this, telling time is very important

Write down all possible time using 12 hours.

What’s New

Claire and her friend met at the SM mall movie theater to see Harry Potter.
Claire arrived at 5:40 .Her friend arrived at 6:12. How long did Claire wait for her
friend to arrive ?
What time did Claire’s friend arrive?
What time did Claire arrive in movie theater ?
What is 5:40 and 6:12 on the 24 hours clock?

What Is It

Claire arrived at 5:40 at the movie theater, and her friend arrived at 6:12.
If 5:40 convert to 24 hours system, it will be 17:40 ( seventeen and 40 hours ) and 6:12
will be 18:12 ( eighteen and twelve hours )

Therefore in changing 12 hours time to 24 hour time, add 12 to the hours and keep the
minutes the same.
12:00 12:00
+ 5:40 + 6:12
17:40 18:12

In 24 hours clock system, time is written as the number hours that have passed since
midnight. In the 24 hours system the day is not divided into 2 parts of 12 hours each
but it’s a continues periods of 24 hours. The 24 hours system of time written in 4 digits.
- In 4:30 am ,how could it write that in 24 hours time format ?
- What time is it in the 24 hours format when it is 9:15 pm?
- What is the equivalent time of 17:00 in the 12 Hours Clock System ?

 4:30 p.m. in a 12 hours clock system will be written as 04:30 (4 and 30 hours) in
the 24 hours clock system
(In 24 hours clock system, the time is written in 4 digits)
 9:15 p.m. in a 12 hours clock system will be 9:15 (9 and 15 hour) in the 24 hours
clock system 9:15+12=21:15
(In transforming 12 hours time format to 24hours time format add 12 to the hours
and keep the minute same.)
 17:00 time is the equivalent of 5:00 time in the 12 hours clock system.
17:00-12=5:00
( In transforming 24 hours time format to 12 hours time format subtract 12 from
the hours and keep the minute same )

What I Have Learned

 If the two digits to left is less than 12, time shows the morning hours that
is before 12 o’ clock noon or am. But if the digits are more than that,
means the time is the 12 noon or pm.

 While converting 12 hours time to 24 hours time, add 12 to the hours

and keep the minutes the same.

 While converting 24 hours time to 12 hours time, subtract 12 hours from

the hours and keep the minute the same.

What I Can Do

The times below are in a 12 hour clock format. Convert and write these times using
the 24 hour clock conversion ( The first one is done for you )

Lesson 2
At the end of the module, you are expected to:
 calculate time in the different world time zones in
relation to the Philippines

Introduction:
Measurements play an important role when travelling. You need to
consider many things such as time. Take note also that times are different from all
around the globe. Be ready to know the time differences between countries. Let us
say you want to call from here to your relatives in another country, you need to make
sure that they are awake. The world will be disordered if there is no concrete concept
of time. Different times at different places in the world are caused by the movement of
the earth, 15 degrees longitude every hour. Knowing the 12-hour and 24-hour clock
will help a lot.

What’s New

Mr. Reyes is going to Dubai to meet his wife who is working

in a hospital as a nurse. He will leave the Philippines at 4:30 pm. If
the duration of his flight is 4 hours and 15 minutes. What time will
he arrive at Dubai? And what time is it in the Philippines? How many
hours is their time difference?
What Is It

To solve the problem:

4:30 – Departure Time
+ 4:15 - Travel Time
8:45 pm. - Philippine Time
4:45 pm - Dubai Time Time
Arrival
If Mr. Reyes leave the Philippines at 4:30 pm. He will arrive in Dubai at 8:45 pm
( Philippine Time ). While in Dubai time is 4:45 pm. So therefore Dubai is behind 4
hours from the Philippines. Philippines is 4 hrs ahead of Dubai
Same as Malaysia
Example: Dubai= 10:30 am 7 hrs ahead of France
Wednesday 11 hrs ahead of Brazil
2 hrs and 30 minutes ahead India
of
Philippines= 2:30 pm 13 hrs ahead of USA
Wednesday 2 hrs ahead of Australia
13 hrs ahead of Montreal
10:30am+4hrs=2:30 pm 7 hrs ahead of Paris
Same as Singapore
14 hrs ahead of Mexico
8 hrs ahead of London
1 hr ahead of Tokyo
18 hrs ahead of Hawaii
11 hrs ahead of Greenland
3 hrs ahead of Sydney
5 hrs ahead of Nairobi
5 hrs ahead of Saudi

What’s More

Activity
Tell the time of the following countries base on the Philippines time.
If the Philippines time is 2:30 pm, what is the time in;

Malaysia - _________
France- _________
Brazil - _________
India- _________
USA - _________

What I Have Learned

To calculate time in the different world time zones in relation to the
Philippines, we need to use the world time zone map for as to easily
understand their time differences.
What I Can Do

Tell the time of the following countries base on the Philippines time.
If the Philippines time is 6:00 am, what is the time in;
Paris - _________
London- _________
Singapore - _________
Australia - _________
USA - __________

Assessment

A. Complete the table.

( Refer to the world time zone map )
Country Time Philippines Time Time Difference
Ex. Cape Town 5:03 am ( UTC +2 ) 11:03 am ( UTC + 8 6 hours
)
1.Tokyo 4:00 am
2.Hawaii 10:30 am
3.Greenland 5:00 pm
4.Sydney 2:00 pm
5. Brazil 11:00 am

B. Use the time zone map to find out the times in these major cities.
Fill in the missing time in the clocks.
( Hint: You may find it easier to work out the time in Philippines first )

: :
Philippines (AM) Paris Tokyo Nairobi

Lesson 3
At the end of the module, you are expected to:
 solve problems involving time

Introduction:
Problem solving involving time is interesting because you can
enhance your mental skill, develop your analysis and boost your creative thinking. In
solving word problems, you have to consider the following steps: Understand, plan,
solve and check.

What I Have Learned

To solve word problems involving time, we follow the steps in solving word problems.
Use the different ways to find the time such as subtracting / adding the time started from time
ended, using a number line, and counting the minutes or seconds from the time started to the
time ended.

What I Can Do

Find the answers to the questions about the problem.

Cathy’s house. What time did they arrive at Cathy’s house?

2. Harry leaves school at 3:45 pm. He eats dinner at 6:30 pm. How much time passed
between when he left school and ate dinner?
