communities in Indonesia.
• Chinese influence in the visual arts
Example : In Cirebon, China designs were
copied by local ceramic and painting.

 Christianity is the

recognizes two main divisions of
Christianity in Indonesia,
namely Protestant and Catholic.

Christians, approximately 16.5 million
adhere to the Protestant stream, while
the remaining 7 million are Catholic.

desired spice-heartland of the Moluccas.

• From 1534 onwards Portuguese priests began to become

active in converting locals to Catholicism and by the end
of the 16th century approximately 20 percent of the
inhabitants of the Southern Moluccas were classified as
Catholic.

Probably the most successful missionary efforts have been in Papua, where many of the
people groups there are now followers of Jesus. Also, in North Sumatra missionaries
saw many Batak accept Christianity in the early 20th century.
